Dude thanks for the video, i look up service info, they said is a 5 hour job but make sense if they want you to remove the intake to get the valve cover off
thanks!...ran into the same problem with that plastic tab on the intake manifold...so I got my saw and just before I cut it.. I said to myself " lets se how TH-cam does it" Lol!
it's 100% fine on both fronts any overflow mixes with oil and gets picked up in the filter worst case. it showed up on the Blackstone analysis, but zero issue. the high temp red is also just fine for half moons. been using it for 15 years on valve cover moons and have never had a leak in those areas.
I would be hugely shocked if that engine doesn't fail very soon due to a blocked oil gallery because the amount of rtv that was used was insane. That and the rubber seal is the seal that's needed nothing else. If it where meant to be rtv'd it would not have a rubber seal
That tab serves as support for NVH. All intake manifolds have some type of bracketry to provide support, so the manifold is not resting on its runners and subsequent bolts. Which can become loose with time and lead to problems. The bracket acts like an absorber and provide rigidity. My .2 but I do this for a living.
Much ado....I hope. Got everything off, pulled the coil to find it dry. Already put a 1000+ miles since changed plugs, so that suggests something in the right direction. Not going to mess with it, will check every 5K, and just count my blessings. Thank you again for all the info. and the patience.
not dissing - but are you supposed to put RTV *all* the way around? I thought these valve cover gaskets were 'dry - fit' except for the few factory contact points for RTV? please confirm either way
honestly without cutting the tab, thats about right but its a 30 minute job with the tab removed and this car has now done over 100,000 miles with no tab, no issue.
Great video. I've got every bolt up but hung up on timing belt side. I removed the 2 bolts on the timing belt cover too and it wont budge. Cover comes up a little on right side. Any clues?
The Dodge dart & some Jeep renegade have the same mopar 1.4 engine, do you know if the gasket is interchangeable? can't find the fiat version anywhere I look.
On RTV...less is more. 10/2022 Updates...you can purchase a gasket set for these motors, but it is RARE/extinct/backordered. I went through a huge search mission back in September. We had to bite the bullet and go to our local Dodge dealer (who services most/all Fiat vehicles thanks to their merger) and pay for OE gaskets. Even then, it took many weeks to receive the parts (as they warned us it would). The perimeter gasket is affordable. This is what folks will often see leaking first (onto hot engine components below). The tube seals (4 total) which seal the valve cover to from the spark plug tubes, are the rare and expensive item. Plan on $130-150 for the full set (all 5 seals) depending on your area and dealer pricing. For perspective, on any modern Honda or Toyota 4-cylinder, we'd be talking $30-40 for a full set from a quality company like FelPro, Mahle, Victor Reinz or Beck/Arnley. TLD: If you own a Fiat product, my condolences to you. 1) They do not age well. 2) They have a healthy assortment of mechanical and electrical issues, many of which showed up in the first 60k miles. 3) And the worst offender: they have very poor aftermarket support here in the states (where factory quality parts and repair data are concerned). But you can work on them yourself if your competent and have decent tools, especially with How Tos and videos online. OP - thank you for putting this together! Your intake manifold deserved that amputation. 😎🍺💪 Let us know if yours is holding together. You used an entire tube of toothepaste's worth of RTV on that deal... 👀
What transmission? The primary characteristic I remember of all the 500s I drove at an old job is that the auto transmission is horrible. The secondary characteristic is that the seatbelt buzzer is super annoying.
I don't now, and will not for a long time own an automatic anything. the auto isn't fun and it's slow, but it's far from a bad auto box. seat belt buzzer is annoying, my solution is buckle in before starting the car then it doesn't make a peep.
Prior to bolting down the valve cover, did you put the RTV in the recessed area where the valve cover gasket goes and then smush the gasket down into the RTV, or did you put the gasket in first and then apply RTV on both sides of the gasket on the ridge?
definitely isn't factory. not necessarily an issue, but means whoever did it before went a little overboard and likely did not replace the tube o rings.
Hey did you ever get the code P0172? I’ve replaced bank 1 sensor 1 fuel regulator & injectors. I still get the code. No clue what to do and I still have rough idle start, high idle and it’ll shut off also fuel consumption and power issues.
It has been a long time, but a cursory search shows them for sale all over the place. the tube o rings are the hard part to find. I was unable to find those outside of the dealer.
tori2dles sorry I do not. it's a standard 10mm fastener so my rule of thumb would be take your small 1/4" ratchet and snug it down 'medium tight' there's no method to it. mine has been try for 30k miles now and I did it 'gut-n-tight'. i've been wrenching for over a decade though so I guess I can guess torque pretty well by the size fastener (m6x1.5) and the material it's going in to. if in doubt leave it a little on the loose side, if it leaks, snug them down a little further! :)
Ovalbore - Thx. Appreciate the fast reply. I'm working with a friend who has your level of expertise, so am guessing he'll be able to do it off your description. Thx again!
Oil blow out near vacuum pump is likely from the pcv assembly, where it mates with the valve cover. There is a rubber oring that likes to degrade and leak; $2 dollar fix. Wish the op showed how to do that, and the spark plug tube seals..but nobody's perfect. The ignition coil SEALS have a very short life out of factory - if anyone reading this is planning on doing any of these seals, do THEM ALL. PCV oring and ignition coil seals are a 25 minute job, and you don't have to take the valve cover off..
Thank you for the video. Question regarding my 2012 Fiat 500 situation. Changed spark plugs and found ignition coil on driver's side (furthest right when facing car) coated in oil - only one of the four. Anyway, is that suggesting a valve cover gasket leak? And also, in the year since this post, have you figured out the "tab cutting" issue?
in addition to the perimeter gasket, there are four rubber o rings around the spark plug tubes that could be to blame, and the tube itself is coated in sealant and inserted in to the cylinder head. this will require further investigation on your engine. there is no 'tab cutting issue' I have put 40k on the car like that through all weather and load conditions. just cut the tab.
I realized I have more questions. Only one tube is getting soaked with oil. I take it this is not normal (lead to bigger issues)? Also, what number cylinder is this (furthest right/driver's side)?
Ballroom Blitz well, the spark plug tube itself has a seal and there's a seal around it. they're individual, there are four of them, so that would make potential sense that only one would be saturated. it's not normal. will eventually lead to misfires but would likely not lead to permanent damage
Hey! So first off thanks for making this video because I can't find anything like this... I have a small oil leak. My mechanic took a look at it and told me to order these parts. He also recommended changing the spark plugs while we are at it. I have the valve cover gasket, I also ordered and intake manifold gasket. 4 spark plugs and 4 spark plug seals. He sort of went missing in action and the quotes to get this fixed are ridiculously high at auto shops near me. My question is do you think a regular person with common sense could replace these? I myself have replaced the shifter bushing/by removing the battery and battery cage. And also have replaced the battery. That's really the vast of my car experience. I'm nervous to take it all apart and be stuck on putting it back together, or not actually fixing the leak. I guess I'd just love some advice on if you think I should hire an expert or if this is a doable job by a regular person 🤣🙉. Thanks for reading this and thanks again for this video in the first place!! Rebecca
been wrenching long enough to know by hand feel what certain size fasteners need for torque, call service dept and they should be able to provide you specs
I'm a former master tech, so truth be told I almost never torque wrench anything. I'd say something around 10 foot pounds is plenty in most valve cover applications, re check after a full heat cycle
I watched multiple videos on this Valve cover gasket change now. Saw one where this guy took the whole engine out just to get the intake manifold out. Meanwhile others just cut that little tab on top of the engine cover. lol I wonder which one I'd rather do... How's your Fiat 500 running if you still own it? I've got one with 101500 miles on it.
I got a 2012 Fiat with 198000. I haven't had any problems but a couple of coil packs and had to do timing belt water pump and tensioner. Mine's starting to get an oil leak on the valve cover and I guess I'm going to have to go do that
Dude thanks for the video, i look up service info, they said is a 5 hour job but make sense if they want you to remove the intake to get the valve cover off
I couldnt believe it when I saw that tab. lol this car is still happily humming away without the tab many years later.
thanks!...ran into the same problem with that plastic tab on the intake manifold...so I got my saw and just before I cut it.. I said to myself " lets se how TH-cam does it" Lol!
elvelozpr bahahaha! that made my day!
Hey! I cut mine too!
Thanks for making this video. It was easy to follow. You just saved me a bunch of money. Thank you, you have a new subscriber. Cheers!
I appreciate the kind words and the sub! thanks for watching.
Damn. That’s waaayyy to much rtv. Also the wrong one. Use ultra grey or ultra black.
it's 100% fine on both fronts

I noted no change what so ever in years of driving post change.
How do you take it off?
Factory repairs has the intake manifold being removed thus the stupid reason for that tab.
hey presto swazall gotcho!

RTV is never necessary, but non flat areas typically benefit from it when they transition.
Yeap that rubber seal is all that's needed. Rtv will not do much if anything
Mechanic shop near me wants $1,290. Thanks for the video. Will definitely be doing it myself.
honestly without cutting the tab, thats about right but its a 30 minute job with the tab removed and this car has now done over 100,000 miles with no tab, no issue.

likely just needs a tap with the rubber hammer, but double check you're not missing a bolt. wouldn't want to break anything.
hey can you send link to where you got the gasket please? Or put in description.
The Dodge dart & some Jeep renegade have the same mopar 1.4 engine, do you know if the gasket is interchangeable? can't find the fiat version anywhere I look.
it should be with all Fiat 1.4 turbo and non turbo engines. I think my 124 spider uses the same gaskets

yes and no. people arent good at ensuring full coverage, and oil analysis came back stellar, so whats shown here is A+

apply the RTV directly to the head in those areas, wait a couple of minutes for it to lightly cure, then fasten valve cover with gasket overtop
What kind of rtv?
Dohh!!! didnt do the spark plug seals!?
weren't available at the time of filming from any parts supplier or dealer.
I can see RTV in the spark wells of my 500.. is that normal? I need to replace mine because one is leaking oil into the spark well

I actually never had any MILs with any of my Fiats 500.
Where did you buy the valve cover gasket?? Cannot find one anywhere on any site!
It has been a long time, but a cursory search shows them for sale all over the place.
the tube o rings are the hard part to find. I was unable to find those outside of the dealer.
@@OvalboreCars what did you gap your spark plugs at?
they're iridiums I put in I think - they don't get gapped.
you can also 'snap' that intake plastic tab off by simply prying it with a crow-bar :D
lol, whatever works
If you know, could you share the torque spec on the bolts? Thx. Great vid.

Excellent, I would say so in that case!
This video was very helpful, now i know why i have some oil wetness behind the vacuum pump. “Where did buy the gasket from??
can't remember where I got the gasket, it was years ago
Ovalbore ok, no problem. Probably a dealer part.
