  • Test of late 1960s fire alarm in the admin building at the college where I work Campus Police. This was after hours to test the functionality of the system. The pull station must be very touchy because I barely release the latch and it initiates. The initiating device is a Simplex Chevron pull; NAs are 4017-03 Bells; panel is Simplex 4246-1, 115v AC. This is a local fire alarm only.

In the UK, fire bells similar to this were the norm for fire alarms, ringing continuously. Indeed, where I work in a large supermarket (I test the alarms weekly) we have bells but they're 6" and red in colour with Fire Alarm written on them. I believe many people still respond more quickly to a fire bell than a fire alarm sounder because it's instantly recognisable.

My second elementary school had those bells installed on the outside as school bells, but their bell system never worked when I went there (they had a Gamewell FlexAlarm fire alarm system with old-style Federal Vibratone 450 horns). There's another school a few towns over that has those same bells, installed outside and in the cafetorium (their fire alarm system has Simplex 4051 horns on 4050-80 and Space Age AV32 light plates.) Both schools were built in 1971.

The Vermont Achievement Center school, in and around the administration department, had bells that sound similar, if not the same, even though I thought I saw a Notifier panel, which is in the basement of the admin. building, but not 100 percent, and most of the bells in the oldest parts, possibly being from Edwards. Some FireLite bells there as well.

When they just have bells as the fire alarm, it makes sense to leave them unlabeled.

They don't have any laws requiring them to be replaced due to age. There are some fire alarm systems that are still in service that dates back to the 1920s. The only time you have to replace a system is when it fails the annual test. However, in certain areas of the country laws may vary.
