Is that just flat stock across the top of the trailer for added support?

It's two and a half inch angle iron with parts of it cut out so that it fits in between the slats

The issue with Harbor Freight trailers is the axle and tires can only handle so much weight. The more steel you add to it, the less carrying capacity you have. What does your finished trailer weigh?

My car is only rated to pull 1500 lb Max. the axles rated for 2000. Each tire is rated for 1100 lb each. Honestly if I put more than a thousand pounds in my car struggles because it's very weak. I mostly building this to pick up the random go cart or generator that needs fixing. When I'm done it might weigh 450 lb. The trailer can handle much more weight than what my car is capable of pulling with its tiny 2.3l 4 cylinder engine/ 153 horsepower... ish

I appreciate the work you put into the build.
I probably have the same motor in my 2005 Ford Ranger and the limits in hauling power.
I bought the 1750 lb HF trailer because the smaller one wasn't available. Keeping it as lightweight as possible is my goal. While beefing it up was on my mind as well, it just isn't going to be hauling more than 1500 lbs.
If I decide I won't be using the folding function, I can see adding some welds.
      Cheers
