That was the In-N-Out of my high school years, middle 70s. There were picnic tables with a metal awning that backed up to the freeway. A few years later I worked in Baldwin Park as a fireman so it was back to store #1 for a snack after a fire.

@@SidetrackAdventures You can find the Ca Gold episode on Chapman college’s web site. CA Gold episode #146. Originally broadcast May 31, 2010. After he died his video archive was donated to Chapman College in Orange. Ca Gold is archived on their web site and available to watch. The college has a Huell Howser museum on Campus, too. California’s Gold continues to be shown on KCET in LA. i’m starting to think that I saw that episode after he died. After rewatching that episode on Chapman’s web site, company reps were discussing with Huell wanting to create a replica of the original, I consulted my husband after bringing this up if he remembered seeing the replica on the north side of the freeway, and he distinctly remembers seeing it. So, to sum it up, The original 2010 episode discussed the idea of creating a replica of the original In N Out and eventually they did because I did see. When exactly, I don’t know,

Back in the 80's, someone gave me about 25 In-N-Out bumper stickers and I took them home. My oldest son had seen people modiy them to say "In-N-Out urge. He modified several to sat "In-N-_Out Burrito" and put one on the bumper of my work truck. I drove around with it and one day a guy approached me and said, " Oh! They sell burritos too?" I laughed and told him it was created by my son. He had done such a good job, you couldn't see the mods unless you got really close and looked carefully. I miss my son. I first heard of In-N-Out while still living at home in Imperial, CA, in the 1980's. Saw their bumper stickers a lot in those days, but back then they hadn't expanded much outside LA County. It wasn't until 1990 that I finally ate at an In-N-Out (I had started attending Cal Poly Pomona at the time), and I was hooked. I visited their store in Diamond Bar fairly regularly while I was in school, and became a lifelong fan. My usual order is a Double Double, animal style.

We've been to the replica but they weren't open at the time. Will have to plan better our next SoCal trip. We did visit the store and working INO...and we were just at our local one last night. I could customize like crazy, depends on my assessment of the cashier's experience. Basic is hamb w/lettuce, grilled onion and mustard. Going further would be double-meat, mustard-fried. Fries, absolutely well done, without question.

Fries well done...I knew there was some hidden reason I found this channel legit. For the record, trip-dub with everything, onion(fresh or grilled depending on mood) pickle, but sometimes no lettuce to make room for the third patty. Best fast food in California, especially if you look at cost/benefit, what you get for your money. Where else can you get a REAL fresh burger, that tastes heavenly, for $5, or an all-day meal for $10? Also, one of the best-run restaurant companies: good to employees, high employment per store, decent wages, clean stores, etc etc. I have heard rumors that as time goes on, management is letting some things slip in favor of higher profits, which I hope is not true....they already have a winning recipe... one of, if not the highest, store success rates in the business, and no shady BS that I've ever seen anyway. The local store here in Arroyo Grande is, literally, the busiest restaurant of any kind I have ever seen in my life, it routinely has 30+ cars in line for hours, and a full lobby as well. I've seen other popular major chain restaurants placed in prime locations and busy international airports that look like they've fallen on hard times in comparison.

see the size of that store? the real genius behind IN/N/OUT was leasing the pie shaped land that was right off a freeway onramp, and you could see the signage from miles up the freeway. No one else had a use for that land. you swung off the freeway , then turned immediately into the driveway and drove between two bldgs. no bigger than an outhouse! one for prep, one for orders, preparing and cooking.

Fries "light well" is the best! Always animal style for a burger or cheeseburger.

Double-Meat (Dbl-Dbl with no cheese), Animal, and Animal Fries for me. 🍔🍟
It’s interesting to note that, in addition to having so many employees at work, In-n-Out employees have always been paid better than almost any other fast-food chain, plus benefits that most don’t offer. They’re paid better, they’re treated better, and encountering a rude- or grumpy In n Out employee is unheard of. Likewise, complaints by employees are very rare, and are usually revealed to be fraudulent.

1970 a vegan burger was available, but you had to know to ask for it (secret). then the only menu items were the burgers, fries, and drink. Shakes were added about 1970? or a little later?

I have to admit, I haven't tried animal style because I'm not big on mustard. Going to try it next time we go though.

The guy who takes my order at the drive-thru is always so nice to me and my dog:
"Ma'am, I really like your dog." (Border Collie)
Me: "Thanks, she likes you too. After all, you have the burgers."

They are pretty good. I mean you can find better burgers elsewhere, but as far as chains go they are among the best.
