Tortured, ebullient, hopeful, tragic, incendiary. This band was formidable. Dolphy’s tone on alto was never more cutting and sincere, splintered and gravelly. He sang like an insane bird who heard sound combinations nobody else could imagine yet in jazz, not even Ornette. And Waldron’s solo is amazing.
What about Booker? He gave one of the greatest trumpet solos in Jazz history on this track!!! The beauty and emotional coloring are unmatched. Cheers 🥂🤟🏾
Its Bookers solo here that does it for me. Im not exaggerating. Its my favorite trumpet solo of all time. Haunting, lyrical,swinging,...and very poignant when you realize Booker was taken from us waay to early.
A profoundly beautiful composition, one of Dolphy's greatest. And Eric's solo is beyond incredible. This entire concert of 7/16/61 ranks in importance with Benny Goodman 1938,Jazz at Massey Hall,Monk at The Five Spot,or any other significant Jazz event of the last century.
Just listen to the two short saxophone solos on the bridge, during head-in and head-out. That ALONE is enough! But then his actual solo…..still state-of-the-art. a Tour-de-Force, almost a summing-up of past and future.
Eric Dolphy never disappoints.

"TORTURED"? More like Annoyed!! YOU, Much like Those Like You, Miss the Point.. Who, OTHER than Those LIKE Yourself, CAUSE this "Torture"??

Il love the beginning at 2:03. It sounds like volubile talkative gossiping women. Just the exact intonation and no need for words...
