I've found that during the summer, I like to sew in place of knitting. My summer knitting plans are all socks, easy on the hands and not hot on my lap.

I knit in winter, but spring and early summer is all about the gardening. When the weather gets hot, I retreat into the a/c and resume knitting.

I really connect with the part about, having lots of crafts to do, but wondering around, not knowing what I want to do and not getting anything done. I've got so many things to make and I spend all my time knitting. But if I think about the quilts I want to make, or the adult coloring books I've collected and want to color, or the piles of books to read, I just feel the tension in my shoulders start to build and hurt. I have to only think and do one thing at a time or I get nothing done.

I hit the 14 minute mark and it really resonated with me when I get overloaded with choices of things I *could* do, but then I'm overloaded and hit ADHD paralysis, so I end up mostly not doing anything. 🥲 These days I've been trying to plan two things I can do every day (even simple like tend this part of the garden and weave 4" of my current towel project) so I don't get stuck like that so often.

I’ve fallen into the exact same house plants wormhole (Sheffield Made Plants). 😂 I just had the one snake plant and I felt like it wasn’t growing, so I looked for videos to learn. My YT feed is now all plants, crochet and knitting (and cats!) and I bought two new plants and separated the snake plant in two pots. It’s good to keep busy, whatever the hobby!

I feel your making struggle for sure. I’ve been sewing more lately for our new grandchild due in August. That has been fun. Knitting just hasn’t been my go to right now. The struggle is real. I paint, draw, knit, weave, crochet, embroider, needlepoint, garden, sew etc etc. You can see that I’m called in many directions. Recently I thought I might want to learn how to throw pottery, but stopped myself and thought I can pull from the list above instead. Even retired, I can’t find time for it all. (I just bought that watercolor book. Thanks for enabling😊).

@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS Hello Taylor. I have just finished my fourth C J Sansom book ‘Tombland’. I listen to audiobooks as I am registered blind and have very little vision left now. All I can say is “how thick is this book in print?” Most of the books are two to two and a half hours listening time. Tombland is 37 hours 41 minutes 😂😂. Brilliant books and so addictive. Now listening to Dissolution which is only 2 hours 14 minutes 😂😂. Love your latest rescue shawl. I am wanting to knit a very large shawl but going to have to wait until the weather gets cooler.

Knitting is my first hobby, but I also LOVE Scrapbooking. Scrapbooking takes a back seat for the summer months...one, I have a large garden, two...the humidity causes havoc with paper! It soaks up the moisture and then doesn't cut cleanly.... So for now, it's knitting!

I do the same thing with my indoor and outdoor potted plants every 3 years. New soil also. I have also started working on my long forgotten wips. I started also 2 top down yoke pullovers, but just working on the yokes and then putting them away until the fall to finish. I have a pile of books that I bought years ago and never got around to them...started a Nicholas Sparks book which is a fast read. Then I have a trilogy of Ken Follett books to get to. Too much to do and too little time

Thank Goodness for today’s podcast! I now know that it’s normal for me to put my knitting or crocheting down and dive into something else for a bit. I bought a small cross stitch kit a couple of weeks ago and dove into that. It took me until halfway through to remember why I don’t cross stitch much (it tends to bore me to tears) but I finished it and it turned out pretty decent!!!
I have not been able to access the community tab from the app so I have to go into Google and get on TH-cam from there and it works but then I’m not able to edit my comments on videos from there. Anyway I just realized yesterday that I can access the community tab from the app now!!! YAY!!! The bag of your grandmas that you are redoing is so beautiful, Tayler. I’ve gotten into succulents during the pandemic. I do not have a green thumb (just to be clear) which is why I probably “fell into” having a bit of fun with them during the spring/summertime. And lately I’m dabbling into embroidery 🪡 🧵 with my teen daughter. :)

Welcome back Tayler. Once again your vid is sooo very timely for me. Like you, knitting for me is my main squeeze but my partner and I are about to head off for 5 months touring Australia in our caravan and the thought of choosing patterns, making sure I have all the wool and needles and then sitting around a red dirt campfire at night and trying to keep all that tidy… even with the best project bags…has just been too daunting for me. So I have decided this is the perfect time to CROCHET. I will be making the Sundance Throw you mentioned a few episodes ago. 5 cakes of wool, a repetitive stitch pattern and one hook is perfect! I will still be relying on your videos to help soothe my knitting soul but new craft crochet here I come. 😂

Ohhhhhh ... I already have the whole shebang to pursuit that hobby...in a drawer...and pan pastels, and pastels, and a million coloured pencils museum quality, and paper, and ...you name it , I have it....but then, then I started knitting!!!!🫣🫥🙄😵‍💫🙃😄....and started going to meetings and knowing new people like me...and just don't have the time ...all that I love takes so much time!!! And it's done on a chair, I struggle to get some exercise!!! I'm always thinking about drawing or painting but it's so much easier to knit on the sofa.....( maybe if I had a room just for myself it would be easier...)...but really I just wanted to thank you once more to give me the absolute urge of buying that special book and give it a go😊🥰...about the sweater curse, I have been thinking and concluded it might be useful some day so not going to break it. 😉Lots of love from Lisbon 🥰!

So glad you are feeling chipper again, Tayler! Great to see your post. Yes, I have ebb and flows in my hobbies. I'm still plugging away on my granddaughter's baby afghan, but had a short detour to make a striped baby ball for a co-worker's baby shower and I did a watercolor graduation card for my niece (she's funky and artistic and thought she'd appreciate a one-of-a-kind card). I like to watch Jenna Lefebvre's watercolor tutorials and Ellen Crimi-Trent's tutorials, but will check out Paul Clark. I have the Jenna Ramey book and Barron's 101 Watercolor Techniques. Welcome back, so glad you're better! I think many of us can relate to the seasonal aspect of choosing how we spend our time. In the Summer I have a garden to maintain (so many flowers, herbs and tomatoes out there) but I still want to knit (mostly smaller projects) and work on my temperature blanket in the evenings. Reading (mostly audiobooks), too. But in the Fall, Winter and Spring I do a lot of cooking/baking, knitting bigger projects and general house/yard clean up. This Fall I plan to get back to writing (last year it was haiku) and maybe start drawing. There's so much to do, it's really hard to choose sometimes. Have you read the Charles Todd books, the Inspector Rutherford series? Very well written, good character development, interesting historical notes. Love the watercolor book recommendation, I might have to buy that! Thanks!

To me, which hobby I'm drawn to seems to be mainly dictated by how soon I can wear (or gift) the finished product. Spring & Summer = break out the sewing machine, time to make some floral cotton sundresses. Fall & Winter = dig out that wool, it's sweater (& cardigan, shawl, hat, etc) season baby!

Lol great video. This reminds me of a time when I was visiting my LYS last summer. The gal there said business does taper off in the summer time and a lot more people go out and garden…(including myself)

I’m definitely still in my knitting season. I have so many summer items I want to knit, I haven’t even casted on all of them but bought more summer yarn in cones. Plus I want to knit a bralette. Also have gift items to knit: hats and socks. I have time but so much to knit!

Everything you are saying sounds so familiar! 13:39 I am wrapped up in so many different crafts that I don't know how to prioritise them and it makes me feel so overwhelmed. Also like you said I can't just sit and knit around my family. I need to feel it as a special moment, same as my time for meditation.

So glad you're feeling better! I absolutely have hobby seasons - when spring and summer come out I am outside/in the garden (especially at my parents', they have a fantastic one every year). Reading, knitting/crochet, and bowling are ones that I've had ebbs and flows with year-round, but I'm also into painting a little, video games a little, puzzles a little -- just things that I can pick up and put down with whatever's catching my eye.
I'm going to have to check out that author; I have so many books on my TBR, but what's another one? 😂

That watercolor book looks amazing. I got really into acrylic painting a few years ago by watching Art Sherpa and one thing she emphasized that stuck with me is that drawing and painting are two different skills. Tracing a design and then painting it is still painting. Thinking of them as two separate skills really helped me develop both because it made me realize that they both require different techniques to improve. For instance, trying to practice drawing on a canvas that I'm going to paint is not super effective. But practicing in a sketchbook and then tracing my final drawing onto the canvas to paint allowed me to practice both skills effectively.
Anyway, now I gotta go buy that watercolor book...

One of the interesting things about having ADHD is the tendency to hyper-focus and also to squirrel. So I'm always rotating through a dozen hobbies. I got really into growing orchids for a couple years but now my mother looks after them. Taking care of plants was too much weighed with all the mammals I have to keep alive lol.

I had to laugh when i saw your ilene bag in progress. I repurposed yarn for mine, and I'm at the same point with mine. It really does feel like "sloggin" through. It is bulky, and I can only knit a few rows before having to put it aside!
I have other things pulling on me-quilting, gardening etc. I have to do just one thing at a time (after prioritizing the list).

Hi Missus Earl, I hope you got my submission, and I realize that you can't show all the submissions, so I have no way of knowing. 🤷‍♀️
Anyway, I'm still working on that other plarn (plastic yarn) bag I think I mentioned in the e-mail. I did not finish the second one in time. I'm enjoying doing some colorwork on it (with different colored plastic bags, a couple green and some silver) and a couple skinny braids on the newer one. The bag is not half done yet, and I'm not even certain I have enough of the same types of bags, for the main color (by feel, texture, and elasticity, not necessarily from one store), in my possession to finish it yet, so it's a work in in progress.
I recently trolled your Ravelry favs, and noticed that Irish Cap; it looks so interesting.
The way you talk about being wishy-washy with hobbies reminds me of how I am with chores and tasks. I am learning recently that I need to make a plan to set aside time each day for each thing, and that scattered attention means scattered results. Perhaps, dedicating a specific day of the week to a specific hobby might be beneficial for you? But, it's not just a scheduling issue. We, as humans, need to change how we think about tasks and hobbies. We don't have to do something; we get to do something. So, sometimes excitement is the result of how we are thinking of it beforehand. Weren't you ever excited to vacuum?
Have a Happy Early Father's Day.

If you like that era for your reading outlet, try Sharon Kay Penman’s The Queen’s Man. It is set in the era of Eleanor of Aquitaine, a bit before Henry the VIII. I love her. She was quite a woman. (If you’ve ever seen Katherine Hepburn in The Lion in Winter, you’ll get a great idea of the kind of independent, intelligent, interesting character she was. Peter O’Toole plays her husband, King Henry II.) This series follows Justin de Quincy, the Queen’s private confidant, as he solves murders for Eleanor. Lots of period details, great characterization. I love to mess with watercolors. Two of my friends and I meet whenever we can to pick a “lesson” and have an art day. Glad you are feeling better. Such a bummer to be sick. Love the tote you made from your grandmother’s knit bag.

In the summers we have Viking re-enactment markets and at some point, suddenly, l get a sewing mojo! Usually at the last minute . . .
And then, every year, l start questioning why l don't sew clothing for myself for ordinary modern clothing . . .
When school starts again in the Autumn l will pack all the sewing up and my prep work for school will spill out over the big table again!

Um, so did I do something wrong with my submission for the something old something new mak? I love joining in challenges and thought this a good one. I love prizes, but really joined in to be part of the community on here. I loved all the other submissions, but felt just a touch disappointed when my entry wasn't there. I did try to follow all that was expected, so please let me know how I managed to muck it up. No big deal, just wanted to know. Thanks. Always enjoy your podcasts and am glad you are feeling better. ❤ Oh, and BTW, I loved that series you are reading. I did find the last one in the series a bit heavy going with the history, still very readable, but it's a rather long read. 🎉

Hi Heather! The submissions I showed here were not the entire collection of submissions. I’ve shown additional submissions for the SOSN MAL in past videos from the previous weeks and i plan to show more in my next video. Due to the volume of submissions, I try to limit how many i show in any one video.
