Some good information here I would add a couple of microfiber towels for hands, face or quick drying your body if you get drenched be it by rain or a tumble in the river. Carry a dry sack with a change of clothing if you do get soaked. When cold and wet your body temp will fall rapidly. So get out of wet clothes as soon as you can. A thermos of hot drink, gas burner or Kelly kettle to rapidly boil water for drinks will not only boost moral hot food or drink will help keep your core body temp from getting too cold.

    Great stuff Lance.
My KEY cold weather tool is a fleece neck gator. Don't leave home without one.

I keep a small towel in my waders to dry my hands when they get wet. Makes a big difference.

There are many kinds of nitrile gloves. From mechanical to medical with longer cuffs. But nitrile gloves with hand warmer packs on the back of your hands is a game changer. Foot warmer packs are even better(bigger) or just double up the hand warmer packs. Secure in place with some hockey tape. I've been using this setup for years. Takes the edge off. And if you're out for long days, every so often just take a break and reactivate the packs. This setup helps with the wind, waterproof, and still gives you the ability to feel the fly line, which, to me, is the most important.

I add rechargeable hand warmers in the pockets of my waders. The towel to dry hands, the hand/foot warmers tucked into the sleeves of my outer shell, and fastened tight also helps. I go bare-handed until I can't feel my fingers, then take a break.

When thinking insulating, the moniker "cotton kills" is very true! Wool retains ~60-75% of its ability to insulate when wet, on the flip side all down loses 100% of it insulating properties when even slightly damp. Also also thinsulate is a brand name and heavy and not much better if any better than regular feese, or fuzzy modern polyester. If you get wet you lose heat 20x faster than dry, and a workng muscle only creates 18 times more heat at the most than a muscle at rest. Source: im nuts... ive been hammock camping in the winter as low as -25f for years. ;)

Down also looses some of it's insulating properties when compressed underneath a shell jacket, in general, with how good the high end synthetic downs have gotten, there is no downside to them other than not being packable.

I have a fleece pull over with a pocket on the left side. I stick a hand warmer in there and it keeps the core warm. Warm core, warm blood, warm extremities.😁
