  • NAS Brands in 2021 - Which One Should You Choose? nascompares.com/2021/01/01/na...
Buying your first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device can be a remarkably daunting task! Even for the most technologically knowledgable, a NAS is a very different kind of device than most of the hardware in your environment. At its heart, it is just a computer (like most things are when you break them down to the basics) that is built for a specific task. However, there are numerous elements of a NAS (such as it always being ON, the constant remote accessibility and focus on storage primarily) that set it apart from most other devices, and this si where a lot of people get a bit intimidated by it. There is always the option of using cloud services, such as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, but these are often paid monthly subscription services, involve your data being shared across other services and (most worrying of all) leaves your precious data in a position to be used for analytics without your knowledge OR open to hacking because of the sheer size of the target. Add to this the fact that in most cases, a severed connection to the internet means a severed connection to your data, and the appeal of moving away from 3rd party cloud and on to a NAS is pretty clear. The industry of NAS has been in constant growth for over 30 years, with big players like HP, Dell and IBM steadily losing the home and SMB market to the likes of Synology, QNAP and more. The brand diversity in the field of NAS servers has continued to grow right up until 2021, with the benefit that the way you can interact with your data, what NAS devices can do and the price point of this technology being exceedingly affordable (with fully featured solutions WITH storage media arriving as low as £200). So, today I want to talk about what NAS is, what a NAS can do, and which NAS Brand you should consider buying in 2021.

This is a good series, I am interested in going down the NAS route as it becomes clearer that eventually cloud-based storage is going to become a chargeable option as security, privacy and quantity & type of data become bigger issues both to us as individuals and to the tech companies.
The breakdown of the advantages and things to be aware off is excellent for, those like me, who have a basic understanding and can cope with straight forward tech things but are not geeks (I mean that in the nicest of ways, honestly). I want to be able to store and retrieve my photos, music & documents and be able to store it safely and if possible run my NAS with someone (relation, like son) so that we can piggyback and have an off-site back-up. I don't need to able to program but need to know that the software is available to let me do it.

I was an early adopter of the TS-453BT3. The NAS died while I was overseas. QNAP replaced the unit under warranty, however it didn't fill me with confidence in the device!
My TS-412 is still going strong, albeit in a diminished capacity - as a backup CCTV platform running Surveillance Station.

Can you add users specific folders with this setup with read and /or write privileges and individual passwords. For example: I’d like to share pictures and videos with family members across the country And have specific people to only be able to read / view files and others can write files. Would this unit fit the bill? Thanks!

I am going to purchase something here shortly for a Plex media server and expect to have various transcoding needs and my thought is the i5 would be better for that. Thanks.

I bought three TS1635's on the company dime. Bought for special projects of bringing a whole bunch of data, where the amount was " about .." x tens of terabytes each. For the purpose, the units worked well. None failed. We utilized them to move that data across thousands of miles overnight. The machines were officially retired, but still running. Those were purchased in early 2018. The devices were selected because it was 10 gigabit capable, had sufficient capacity for the intended quantity of data to be moved, could be encrypted, and shipped in a relatively small box, and it was raid 6, in case a drive failed in the course of shipping. The alternative was to buy another EMC SAN, put it in location A, copy the data over, and then ship the entire SAN to the final destination. Uh, we'll try the QNAP.. ;)
Being in IT, the only quibble I had- wasn't with the NAS, but our company's inability to provide an effective way to back them up; that's the real reason the machines weren't used elsewhere.
In any corporate environment, if it can't be backed up, it does not belong in the environment. That's VERY IMPORTANT.
Sadly, I still think that the devices were often faster than the 135 disk SAN we had; and definitely faster than the 48 disk Compellent and these devices, albeit only 36 raw TB, well, the machines did fairly well. But then, I didn't have 150 virtual machines running on the QNAPs either. Each, with 16 disks, were about $3500; In the datacenter, we also had a $50,000+ Dell Compellent and a $600,000 EMC SAN.

Despite of many choice, I'm still looking for Qnap solution for home use. My requirements for qnap: low power usage, 10GbTBase, less noise or no noise (because supposed to be in the living room into small apartment), 4Bay or more.
Looks that the model "HS-453DX" should be good, but based on qnap performance tests they got about 6Gbps with all disks disks as SSD in RAID 5. So, in case that I plan to use 2tiers, one tier as SSD cache and second tier as 2 HDD, then the speed will be far away from 6Gbps which the had, my expectation is that will be about to 5Gbps on cache tier.
Therefor looking for similar qnap solution but with 2 nvme ssd to be used as cache. Still I cannot found the good solution for my requirements.

Nothing I have done will allow me to bring them back, and I lost 6 months of data. This is a major hit and this tells me the product is not a unit to be trusted. why just not load up your computer full of disks... why even use a NAS if your going to connect via thunderbolt.

you can get 25/40/100 gigabit speeds if your storage is capable of it (think nvme or SAS flash storage). again buying a nas and using thunderbolt is missing the point of what a NAS is.

What you say (2:30) about QNAP bringing to market features that aren't fully supported is an understatement. I have 3 stories to demonstrate my point. The most recent is qts5's purported support of TCG Emterprise drives. I purchased such a drive. qnap refuses to enable SED on it even though it recognizes it as an SED. Turns out, they tested their new feature with exactly one drive brand. Did they intentionally cripple their software? Did they decide not to try drives by Seagate or Toshiba? Who knows.
Another example is Qtiering. It's a wonderful concept, dynamically storing files or blocks on faster or slower hardware depending on usage. The problem begins with requiring all such drives being in the same chassis. Have an expansion bay? No tiering across it! what good is it when USB outperforms SATA but they block expansions from using tiering.
I have a few more examples.

Maybe it's a stupid question but what volume configuration do you recommend for a 2 bay QNAP NAS (RAID1) : I just want mutliple file versions to restore previous file versions if needed. (Static, thick, light, snapshots...).
Second stupid question : is it possible configure a QNAP NAS to perform an automatic "scandisk" in case of power failure ?
What's the point of asking for a human action to start a disk check ?

For power loss, its best to have an UPS for the nas. They have Software to talk with it to do safe shutdown if the battery is about to die. I have mine go into a standby mode where it finishes any writes but then block any changes or open files after 3 minute on battery. That way it can then shut down if needed. If power comes back then access is allowed again. It can be set differently depending on how long the UPS can keep running on battery.
Also on Qnap the drives get tested weekly or what ever you scheduled, to let you know if there are problems before a failure.

@@Tigerskunk Thanks for the attempt to answer my silly question. I know it would be better in a perfect world to plug each NAS to a UPS but my company decided not to do so and unfortunately we don't have enough room for a UPS in each cabinet.
Anyway, secondly, my need is not to perform a hard drive diagnostic, I want a "file system check" after each "unclean shutdown" or even at each startup but I can't see the option in the QTS interface.
We have so many NASes at work with so many careless users that it has become really annoying to solve incident by just logging in and starting file system check manually. In a perfect world a file system check would start automatixally the same way Windows XP did for example.

@@asdf51501 it has to do with ZFS nothing to do with specific NAS. QNAP HERO NAS uses ZFS, which is lauded for its resiliency. but you need to walk into it understanding its limitiations. when you configure the RAID levels inside the QNAP OS you are actually setting the ZFS RAIDZ levels.
RAIDZ doesnt support expanding the volumes by adding more drives after the volume is created. you would have to move the data and rebuild the data.
consider for example. you have a 6 bay nas.
lets say you populate 4 disks and use RAIDZ2 (RAID6). you can not expand the RAIDZ2 volume by adding more disks you would have to create a different volume.
note RAIDZ2 tolerates two disk failures.
however if you for example instead do two, 2 way mirror vdev ( 2+2 disks, instead of raid). this is presented as a mirror pool. when you add two drives you can create another 2 way mirror in the mirror pool to expand the storage.
this solution tolerates one disk failure in each mirror.
meaning failures can be more complicated it can tolerate minimum one disk failure in the mirror pool but possibly upto three depending on what disk fails. this would be similar to RAID10 conceptually. two disks fail in the same mirror will equal data loss and require you to restore from backups
you could do two, 3 way mirror to get the more resiliency (3+3) in a 6 bay. in a three way mirror you can tolerate 2 drive failures in each mirror. thats a minimum 2 disks in the storage pool and a whooping 4 disks potentially. this would be similar to RAID60 conceptually

I think it's funny that you say that Synology hides things when I had to search like crazy just to figure out how to access the QTS filesystem so I could migrate my plex data to the thing. The memory management is terrible! I mean, it's using an implementation of Linux and it tells me that after 5 days of up time that it's been running so long I need to reboot before it can update the firmware, REALLY! I constantly lose my connection to the NAS causing issues with access to my network drives and talk about lack of support, I'm still trying to figure out how to disconnect my internet connection if my VPN fails. The most irritating is that I've just rebooted, updated firmware, rebooted again, i'm running 1 application and I keep getting a message saying the server is busy and that my browser connection needs to be reloaded. I want to throw this thing out the window. I wouldn't call myself a power user, but I'm no dummy and I do have a degree in computer science, but even with much less knowledge I shouldn't have the issues with performance that I'm having. While I liie the QNAP NAS and it has been dead reliable, I also like the BROBO from two aspects
1, the ability to plug in a drive without the need of a cassette, 2. the use os mSATA as a memory buffer. I feel QNAP could easily add these features and if done correctly could actually save in their cost to produce. The addition of the fifth drive adds to the drive pool, and the mSATA with is easily accessible adds to the ability to add additional memory where it can be utilized in buffering. The Down Side to me of the DROBO is the lack of updates to keep the NAS up to date.
This has been a hallmark of the QNAP as it is kept up to date. How ever I am disappointed in that QNAP has removed the USENET features and applications from their applications..
Construction wise the QNAP is a much cheaper system, as it appears to use an off the shelf board and adapted the board to use as a NAS rather than a purpose built board (TS451+) access to the second Memory board is a total disassemble, however once you have access running 16GB of RAM is a no brainer. QNAP seems to be more approachable but no more responsive than other NAS producers like DROBO and SYNEROLOGY As the local resident IDIOT I appreciate your Guides and wish I had found your articles prior to my purchase.

Currently I have a remote Synology Ds419slim VPN to the Qnap using OpenVPN and then connects thru the network to the Ds412 to run drive sync to synchronize the the Synology systems. For drive mapping its the same in windows to map a letter to either machine. For synchronize between the brands would require using Rsync to do that. Which they both have.

My opinion is based on my couple of years experience on QNAP. Don't buy it. Buy something more stable. QNAP software is crap and will give you outages and outages over and over again. For example recent firmware update done by system and after firmware update, can't login. Means can't access anything because of encrypted storage. QNAP responded after 2 days and their instructions didn't fix the issue still. No response for last 24 hours and I'm still waiting after 4 days of complete outage. Hoping that eventually at least it gets fixed without any data loss. It has been a disaster situation so far. Time I have spent on QNAP issues working with them again and again every now and then is really just too much too handle when I have already too much work going on.

(already responded to your other enq, but repeating here for others) Thank you for sharing your feedback and experience with QNAP on this. It's import for users to see how brands interact with customers and more over to see how issues are dealt with. Keep us updated on this as much as you can. Cheers dude.

@@nascompares One week of total NAS downtime and still counting. No luck yet. They asked to replace RAM to original ADATA which I told them will never cause issue of such symptoms, I still replaced for their peace of mind and progress on case, but that didn't make any diffierence with ADATA RAM. Nothing changed. Issue persisted. Crap software and support both. Qcrap is right name.

QNAP = OS security flaws, Google qsnatch

I think that is behind them now as long as your QNAP software is up to date. The interwebs conspiracy "experts" are just full of Qsnatch theories though.

How is it that you can make a video speaking thousands of words and yet not a damn thing memorable? Lol

    1. It's TOO helpful.
    2. It's TOO innovative.
    3. It's got TOO MUCH SUPPORT for 3rd party hardware.
    4. It's got TOO MANY MODELS for your exact needs.
    5. Did you know you can upgrade the warranty? Let me tell you about it.
This is like when a prospective employer asks what your faults are and you're like well I'm TOO helpful and people say I work TOO hard.
Bruh if you're not getting paid then I don't know what is going on here.

Weird. I've posted a few times in several of this guy's (NASCompares) videos (I'm in the process of researching a NAS purchase), and he's provided helpful answers to my comments in several cases. So I have a pretty favorable opinion of NASCompares at the moment. Sure, he throws a lot of random info at you and some of it is just looking at a particular one and pointing out its features. However, I do like the videos where he goes in, sets up user permissions, creates a storage pool and then volumes within the pool, and so forth. He also has some discussion of what's better for Plex and some other features, and reviews largely both QNap and Synology NASes. I do try to stay focused on the videos he puts out that are in my target range for what I'm looking for, though.

I'll give you all a good bit of advice before you buy QNAP. DON'T!!!! The kit is absolute garbage. I've had it for 3 years now. Usless glitchy crappy unreliable software that constantly refuses to play any popular files. Endless updates, horribly slow, terrible dashboard that is totally not user friendly, terrible customer support (always reply by expecting you to jump through hoops and expecting customers to have good IT knowledge). Now it won't even play my music in album order and prefers to play songs alphabetically with no obvious options to change the order like you can do on Windows in 5 seconds flat. Total garbage 0/10.
