Did you know that people aren't bumpin' uglies as much as they used to? That's right, studies show that the amount of people enjoying bedroom funtimes is less and less, despite (or maybe because of?) the fact that we are bombarded with sexuality maybe now more than ever. Buckley looks at a few studies, as well as a couple charts that went viral that reportedly showed the hobbies that women find most and least attractive, to try and get to the bottom of why no one's getting on top of each other.

Perhaps, although I do wonder if people are looking for those. Like, on my local subreddit, every month or so there'll be some post from someone in my city going "I just don't know how to meet people what am I supposed to do?" and then like 50 people offer advice and places in this city to meet people or places they've met people, and then inevitably they'll get replies like "yeah but I don't like [blank]", which then takes me back to an older video where I talked about people not being interesting enough or willing to try new things.

As a generalization, women might not play games as much or as often as men, but they can absolutely love engaging with them as much as any male gamer. My previous girlfriend wanted to play Left 4 Dead 2 every time she came over to my house. She convinced me to buy one of the Resident Evil games so she could watch me play it. I played it myself maybe once before she ended up taking the controller. From then on, she'd take the controller from me every time she asked me to play it, and instead, she'd play it herself while _I_ watched. Essentially the inverse of the stereotypical "man plays game and ignores his girlfriend while she sits right next to him" situation. I don't know how worthwhile or genuine I find most of this discourse. Be a well-adjusted human being, and you'll be fine.

As a kid coming of age in the mid 2000s, individualism and things like "girls don't want your attention, guys" were drilled into my head.
A combination of things like the internet, teenagers being taught things that don't serve them well in the end (making them become bitter adults), so many different things taking up our time now (even if it is streaming and things like it)... and connection is happening less and less.
Socially, we've been told tons of what not to do, but not much of what TO do instead. When there's a lot of "don't do this, don't do that", people are going to choose other things to take up their time. Women saying "we don't want to be approached at work" is understandable. But people will apply that sort of logic everywhere if they're not careful about it (and it's not helped by women saying "don't approach us at the gym, bar/restaurant, when we're with friends, etc".)

I definitely feel like that's a factor. I see a lot more people recognizing that they don't have to get married or even partner up, and I know in the past that wasn't socially acceptable so it happened a lot less. I used to work with the elderly and I remember several little old ladies who talked about how great it was that we younger women didn't have to marry, and how they would have preferred not to marry but had to. So at least some of it is that there is always a percentage (even a small one) of people who don't WANT to be in a relationship and now just have the freedom to live that way.
Most of the most miserable, boring, ugly, nasty, rude people I've ever met were married. Sadly, it's not actually hard to be in a relationship....it's hard to be in a *healthy, happy* relationship.

I think there was a study that said something like 85% of people hate their job.
Taking that in consideration, it's not hard to see why people who work 40h a week at a job they hate would select to put their free time into something they actually enjoy instead of going out trying to get laid, get rejected frequently or hey! Strike the jackpot, but risks eventually end up in a miserable relationship once the honeymoon period is over (goes both way, maybe your partner will get bored after a while).
But it's true that it also feels like we live in an ADHD time where people have a 30s attention span and will get bored way easier than before.
Sociologists sure have quite a puzzle to figure out, but I think humanity's on its way out anyway, so it doesn't even matter if we try to get the birthrate up, it just means our kids would struggle with our stubbornness to change and adapt to new realities.

A few game haters on Twitter are not representative to the general population, especially when you realize that everyone plays games nowadays, it's as common as watching TV shows. Not a single one of the women I know has a problem if their boyfriend problem plays video games (especially since most of them also play them), just don't be a jerk that neglects the relationship because of it. Most of the men I know who play video games and have a good personality have a girlfriend or wife. I can’t talk for everyone, but personally I’m just fed up with sex culture. Don’t get me wrong I like it as much as the next guy, but I am sick of everyone being obsessed with sex like it’s the only thing in their lives that matters. Most people these days don’t care for dating or doing shit together and having fun, most women I’ve hanged out with in the past few years thought I had no interest in them or was scared of them because I didn’t try to fuck them the same week we met. I literally had a girl tell me she is not interested in me anymore because I didn’t take her to bed 2 days prior because she really wanted it and that is her revenge even though we just met and didn’t know shit about each other. Call me whatever you want, but I don’t want to jump in bed with someone I know nothing about and start a relationship that won’t go anywhere.

Sometimes the Internet genuinely makes me feel like we broke people.

    • @ADoseofBuckley
      @ADoseofBuckley  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +14

@@Sinovian I think one issue that was legitimately raised by one of the women was that there's a difference between hobby and obsession. Men have always had their hobbies, their meeting places, etc, and they should, both men and women should share interests while also having something that's their own, no one should be glued to each other 24/7 (I think the Pandemic proved that). BUT, there needs to be a healthy balance, and you have a lot of people who DO tend to play like 4 hours+ of video games a day on a work day, and then spend all day in front of the TV on Saturday/Sunday. And that's just not healthy in terms of a relationship OR in terms of being single for that matter.

In my opinion, the main problem is the economy we (I’m from Austria/Europe; but I assume it won’t be that much different in the states) live in. Everyone works full time jobs - a lot of people struggle to pay off all their bills despite of this. Many people lack the energy to meet/hook up with others on the weekend and want to relax instead, hence one of the reasons why gaming is a popular hobby. The financial aspect might not be significant for dating (some people will be like “why should I invest time and money in something that won’t pay off at the end”), but based on my experiences (hearing people talking about this) I think it’s affecting the birth rate to some degree, on top of being overworked. Some young people actually want children, but they don’t know how they gonna take care of them, if they already struggle to take care of themselves.
I think countries like South Korea and Japan demonstrate the path we’re currently on. Their working cultures are even more extreme to some degree.

This topic has been gaining traction for awhile now and if I can give some "insider” perspective as an older gen z or as some like to call a zillennial, I will. Something that comes back often when discussing this topic with my friends or people in my age range, is that we grew up being overexposed to sex. Depending on where you grew up, your dating life started on dating apps. Dating apps not only ruined dating but also how two generations (millennials and gen z) view searching for a partner. Online dating is like shopping, too fat, too boring, too much this or that. It devalues not just people but the act of finding love/company as well. Coming back to the overexposure to sexual content, that too demystifies sex unlike in previous generations where it was a lot more taboo and kept like an open secret. Lots of us started our sexual lives directly going through the "slut era". We did fuck a lot but for many of us younger women and men, casual sex has lost its charm. Couple that with the fact that lots of women who went through that phase now realize that they’ve had lots of sex sure but was it good sex? Not so much for many. Don’t quote me on this but I recall seeing a research graf showing how the orgasm gap between men and women hasn’t shrunk that much if at all. Women are getting fucked but not in the way they should be. I’m saying all of this as someone who went through the tinder hook up phase and realized it wasn’t for me. I wasn’t traumatized or anything, but the sex wasn’t all that great now that I think about it. I’ve felt more sexually satisfied now that I’ve been with a person I’m actually compatible(not just sexually but you get my point) with for nearly 8 years. And many of my fellow women and friends say the same or want the same thing. I think women and men are over hook up culture and want a bit more out of sex and relationships than previous generations maybe?
Now don’t take this as me preaching or advocating for a return to tradition or Puritanism. That would be like shooting myself in the foot as a bisexual gal.
Edit: as for video games. I’ve been gaming since 6 years old so that ain’t a problem. Same goes for friends and acquaintances in my age range so I guess it’s very much a North American problem.

There is too much drama, risk and expense involved in having modern day relationships. Our hyper stressful/hyper expensive society does not foster a way to have healthy relationships. Men know that all it takes to have his life destroyed and financial stability ruined forever is by simply having a spiteful woman who wants to punish you for whatever reason. And then social media is a CONSTANT, never-ending temptation to invite in “competition”.

Imagine thinking this dreck was worth PAYING MONEY to be seen by people? And then it becomes even funnier when you see the view counts on some blue check posts, like they're still not getting anything out of it, because Elon doesn't limit how many blue checks there are, so it's like... an amusement park offering fast passes to everyone, everyone bought one, so everyone STILL ends up standing in line waiting.

  • @MalloonTarka
    @MalloonTarka 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

As one of those none-sex havers, honestly, I'm not sure if I'm an outlier or if there's something more fundamentally wrong. In any case I can't quite figure it out. I should mention that I live in Europe, not the US, so unless this is a general modern or Western thing, my problem might be different. I should also mention that I am very much looking for a long-term relationship - no shame if you like one-night stands or more casual stuff, but I am very much looking for a partner, man or woman.
On paper, I should be doing everything right. Physically, I'm in good shape, tall enough, and take care of my appearance. Mentally, I'm educated, ambitious, responsible, moral and creative. Socially, I'm kind, funny, goofy and charming (according to how people seem to react to me, in any case). I spend a lot time with a lot of different things that interest me, I have a lovely circle of friends (men, women and other), do sports, play instruments, and other social stuff. I meet new people all the time and do new things regularly. (I also don't want to toot my own horn too much, but I feel an accurate assessment is more helpful than an overly humble one here.)
I've also asked a number of people on dates the past few years. We always parted on good terms - hell, some are still part of my friend group, which I'm thankful for; after all, a big part of why I asked them out was because I really like them as people - but I've never gotten a second date.
Honestly, I am a little frustrated, but mostly I'm just confused. If I knew what I was doing wrong I could take steps to fix it, as I have done many times before with other stuff in my life, but since I don't I just feel I'm floundering, locked out of the potential for romantic companionship for lacking practical knowledge that seems obvious enough to 80% of other people my age.
The most plausible answer is that the problem is that I am autistic. It makes it difficult for me to intuit what neurotypical people are thinking and feeling, and vice versa for them about me. So it might be that some way I am just prevent people from feeling that spark, you know? But that's not something I can fix - I can hide it, through masking, but that's exhausting - and aren't we supposed to be ourselves when dating so we'll connect with the _right_ people? Hiding who I am would at best lead to a shallow and short-lived relationship.
So really don't know if I'm doing something wrong, if I'm just unlucky (in being me or in meeting the right people), or if there's another or additional problem more fundamental to our modern society. After all, this is the first time we're like this, having achieved this level of technology and social structure. It would be really lucky if there were _no_ unintentional consequences we needed to address.

Just tell them you're not mad or holding bad feelings about it, but you've noticed it as a pattern with multiple dates, not just the person you're asking, and you're wondering if you're going wrong somewhere. If most of your friends are neurotypical especially, this can lead to such valuable insight into how they think/what people like them might be looking for!

Also it is not your fault don't blame yourself. Modern society is hell for young men.

I knew you were autistic before you said it. I am not, but I am neurodivergent as well and I have to say society is not made for us. Having a partner definitely relies on a lot more patience for us. More practice reading social cues or finding someone not taken aback by being asked if we get their meaning. No silly games. Overcoming social anxiety, etc.
I am demisexual also and it kind of sounds like you may be too. This means we need more intimacy to be intimate than other people and this by its nature means expecting X to happen by X age is ridiculous. I think genuine connection is worth the wait.
If you are loving and caring, someone is going to think you are worth the wait too.
My ex was autistic and despite his becoming abusive, (and even would say it was because he is autistic), there was a time seeing him smile waa like seeing the sun come out, and I walked through valleys for him and I feared no evil. Unfortunately for me, even into the abuse.
I did notice a huge part of the abuse was never trusting that anyone loved him and seeking some facsimile of it is all consuming (narcissism), which if I didn't unwaveringly adore him while being perfect I didn't do. Also it was always assumed I had an ulterior motive he just had to catch me in, because he did.
His mother was like a mother to me, and I can tell she loved him best she could because her parents were narcissists and he for whatever reason didn't have a way to feel it unless he felt useful. He shut down emotionally after being a tender child, and he won't express what he wants from her without being angry and cruel.
Stay safe out there. Putting me first and not walling off is a delicate dance I practice every day. I think realizing statistically your partner is most likely to harm you puts things into stark relief, still.

Has people forgot that you could play video games, get laid ,and have a damn family at the same, maybe it’s just me, but what’s wrong with all that?

One of my friends: met his wife on Twitch chat, brought her to our town, provided for her, bought a bigger apartment to prepare and recently celebrated the birth of his son. All the while the dude was 100%ing damn near every game he touched and played CoD competitively while having over 10k hours across his games on steam.
Like, the guy is a pretty damn hardcore gamer and that never stopped him from being a responsible husband and an awesome friend. Considering how wide-spread gaming is nowadays it’s kinda shocking that some people didn’t catch on that you can absolutely lead a decently active lifestyle, work, be a family man and a gamer at the same time. In fact, most young people nowadays are like this, including women(because Sims 4, Stardew Valley and whatever the fuck it is that they’re playing on their phones nowadays absolutely counts as “gaming”)

I don't really consider it an issue. The world is overpopulated as it is and with the way we're dropping bombs and killing the environment there won't be a world for future generations to live in soon enough. Doesn't help that just buying groceries is incredibly expensive, having a family costs way too much money and time.

Really strange to assume it isn't by choice. I'm in this situation not because nobody is willing, but I got out of an abusive relationship at the beginning of the year, and I'm demisexual so no flings for me. Couldn't if I wanted to. Not having a relationship with someone kind of shuts the shop down for me and what I want has no instant powder.
Homie turned my goddamn sister against me he is so vile. I had to stand up to my own sister about what he said about me and she decided having integrity was too difficult.
Men are a little bit like Mr. Grinch right now. Well, at least the nightmares aren't so bad lately.
The men vs women thing, it's kind of like trying to trust fellow pirates. You do, you might come to regret it. And the thing is, men who mistreated women in the past didn't say they wanted women to be able to vote because they didn't and they were not hiding; if a man was kind to you, you could reasonably expect he meant it unless it revolved around your beauty or your spaghetti.
    Maybe next year.

On the median income you will struggle to own a car, let alone a home. Going out and meeting people is expensive, makes you vulnerable, and demoralizing when you have repeated failures. It's not at all surprising that we're in the situation we are in now.

@@frogglen6350 The house I'm living in now was sold for $40k in 2013, it is now apparently worth ~$100k. Prices of essentials have increased anywhere from 10% to 100% over the last decade, especially during/after covid. Blame the banks buying up homes as a form of investment, or the companies who raised prices and never lowered them.
When the median income leaves you barely above water in large parts of the country, you know something is wrong.

I think a lot of it has to do with sex education. Each generation is becoming more understanding of their body as well as consent. I have a boomer parents that don't know the terms for female anatomy, don't know when a woman is most fertile, and didn't even know what it means to coerce someone. But now i have a nephew, who at 5 years old, already knew that women bleed once a month. Don't get me wrong, there's still a lack of education in many parts of the US but just saying, as a whole, we're learning and talking about it more. Hell I was finally diagnosed with endometriosis because my boss had it and said it sounded like i was experiencing similar symptoms. Now any time a girl tells me she has horrible periods, i ask if she has heard of endo.

I have a 20 year old girl and a 17 year old boy. They have both seen how fucked up this world is and would rather not have kids because of it. Before they knew anything about politics they saw just how bad single parents get treated in the Family Law courts and how expensive and stressful the courts make it just to spend time with your kids so they were against having kids long ago. Now they see how expensive and time consuming kids are. I blame the Government at all levels. The lawmakers, courts, attorneys, and even the church can all go fuck themselves. They need to take responsibility for people wanting to stay childless and maybe actually make the system more tolerable for parents....or deal with the lower number of new births. IDK...I'm not sure why less births are even a problem. Tax everyone at the same rate and we wouldn't need a bunch of new kids to keep the world funded.

As an obese gamer, gaming has never been an obstacle in dating for me. In fact most of the women I've been with were either also gamers, or were happy to join in and try it. The "graph" is definitely bullshit and not representative of the population.
There's so many factors as to why so many, myself included, aren't having kids yet. Most of us can barely make rent, we're overworked and paternity leave barely exists in most countries. Contraception is much more affordable and accessible than before, which has significantly reduced unwanted pregnancy, which was a huge percentage of the birth rate before now.
Anyone trying to minimise it to "men are gamers who aren't getting laid, that's why the birth rate is down" are being either deliberately dishonest, or are easily manipulated by fake studies.

Say that in the developed world, in the developing world sex is still very much alive and well, maybe too well. I don't have a problem finding women, just be a good proper person and not a weirdo. It's really not very complicated, unless you're a weirdo.

I’d argue it has more to do with the death of third spaces, actually. “Going to meet people IRL” has become harder and harder. I feel like I got the last helicopter out of Vietnam when I listen to some of my still-single friends.
Ironically, though, I love reading, met my wife via playing an instrument (I’m a pianist and she’s a singer), and the main way we spend time together is… playing video games.

Me personally, would say that if my hobbies make you vomit (I play video games), then you need to do something that will either make me spending time with you worth it, or you can find someone else who doesn't play video games period. My happiness isn't yours to crush.💯
