Fun fact about me! I was in a production of Peter Pan in middle school. We had a female Captain Hook and I realized I was bi when I got a huge crush on her. The kicker? I played the crocodile. 😬
The Peter Pan play (and even more so, the musical) is total bisexual eye candy!!! I always have a crush on literally the whole freaking cast!! You should check out Todrick Hall's peter pan music video if you haven't already because it's just 🤤🥵💀
I haven't clicked on a video so fast in a while. Captain Hook's costume has always been one that's both frightened and amused me, especially in the haunted mansion sing-along. Wonderful as always!
fun fact the Japanese voice actor for Disney's Captain Hook Chikao Ohtsuka later found fame as the voice behind the legendary pirate Gold Roger in hit anime/manga Echiro Oda's One Piece.
I was scared of costume characters as a child and I would have been scared out of my mind at the topiary Hook. It's a gorgeous costume and I love the way they brought him out but it would have been terrifying for me.
This was such an amazing video! One of my favorite versions of Captain Hook, even though he didn't appear in the Disney Parks in this version, is the version from Once Upon A Time portrayed by Irish actor Colin O'Donohue because of his story arc. In the show he went from being a devilishly wicked villain to a hero. We even get a glimpse of his back story. Can you do an evolution of Wendy Darling and her brothers please?
Follow the Leader Hook is without a doubt the best looking one, really accurate to the character and fits with the live face actor Peter Pan and Wendy costumes. Hope they change from the Mascot head to the live face performer as at least then people can put on a voice and have a great experience with hook the same way we do with Maleficent, Gaston and everyone else.
Yo! I never even realized that he was modeled after Spanish royalty! He's totally a Hapsburg! Look at that jawline! 🤣 also, WTF with the living topiary Hook!?! That's amazing and terrifying!
Now I love captain hook and everything, but now that it's done, I've gotta do this: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! A WARM HAND OF OUR WELCOME, FOR THE COSTUME EVELUTION OF: JAFAR!!!! 🐍
Captain Hook truly has a costume evolution that spans a good majority of the entirety of Disney history! I think topiary Hook is my new favorite thing 🤣
Yeah it’s always bugged me for years, it looks more like Candyman’s hook whereas the hook he’s shown with in all of disneys depictions is so much more elegant. One day I hope they update Hook’s costume and head alongside giving him the a properly shaped hook.
@@munchathezombieit’s funny you mention Candyman, because that was David Lowrey’s reference for his hook in the remake. Although funnily enough, there are production images of a hook being used, that is the classic question mark shape…
10:50 I need a slightly toned down version of this costume as a show character on a cruise, for a villains or pirates night, with a meet and greet afterwards. I think this is pretty close to my perfect Hook, but I prefer a face character to the mascot version for him. (Mostly because Pan is always a face character, and having him chased by mascots always felt weird to me, even as a kid.)
FUN FACT: Hans Conried was not the only actor who provided live action reference for Hook. While Conried did some of the live action reference, there was also another actor who actually did most of that side of the work: his name was Henry Brandon. Brandon is probably most famous for playing Barnaby in Laurel & Hardy's "Babes in Toyland," and Chief Scar in the John Wayne movie "The Searchers." According to Brandon, the animators felt that they needed someone leaner with more expressive body motions for many of Hook's scenes, so Brandon actually ended up doing quite a few of the scenes in the reference work. HOWEVER, much of what was kept of Conried was his facial expressions, and of course his voice. If you read Brandon's biography, I think the author says it best: "Captain Hook sounds like Hans Conried, but he moves like Henry Brandon."
Was always disappointed that Hook was a mascot character. He was my favorite Disney villain as a child and has a personality that would have been so fun to interact with.
May I request hades from hercules for a future evolution? He's definitely a super stylistic villian look wise so would be cool to see how's hes looked over the years
Crazy that modern hook came out in 1999! When I was a kid I have a weird memory of seeing the modern hook and then around the corner was the older designed hook. It was so weird.
@@forrestdupre87 Mad Hatter would be a good episode considering he started as a face character then he got a big head (1961) then went to face character
I actually have a really funny story regarding Captain Hook in the parks, well technically the Disney cruise. When I was younger my favorite Disney movie was Peter Pan and when I was on the Disney cruise for the first time I made it my goal to meet Peter Pan and Captain Hook and they happened to be doing meet and greets right next to each other. So first I saw Peter Pan and had a pretty nice conversation with him, then I went to see Captain Hook and then Peter Pan noticed and then he said something along the lines of “hey give me one of my lost boys back!” And then the cast members jumped in saying that I was on either Captain Hooks crew or peter pans. So Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and the cast members were essentially fighting over me.
Same! I love him and all the other villains! Except for Chernabog. I really don’t like Chernabog. Anyway, Hook is one of my most gotta to meet and take a pic with villains.
@@joshwilliams4976 That’s okay and you’re entitled to your opinion. ^_^ In my opinion, Chernabog’s ugly AF and reminds me of 💩. Lmao 🤣 I love Yzma too. Love Kaa, and every single villain except for Chernabog. And I can’t really choose one over the other. And there’s no order for me.

I always like the original captain hook mascot better , because he has that original pink outfit and less teeth showing, also I used to have peter pan books growing up.
Capt Hook has always freaked kids out with that menacing huge head. Why he and Smee were at the Minnie and Me brunch 15 years ago while we were celebrating my niece’s 4 th birthday I’ll never know. She’s still traumatized as are all the kids who ran away from the hook man that morning😅 Needless to say, I did not get seconds on my Mickey waffles.
Can you do an evolution of Snow White, Cinderella, Alice, and Aurora? It would be interesting to see if much has changed although they’re some of the oldest characters in the park. Or the Mad Hatter and White Rabbit?
Seeing the opening of Disneyland will never not be terrifying, thank god the characters don’t look like that anymore 😂😂😂 Also I wonder how the actors that are face to face with the skin hugger Hook’s stay calm/have a straight face whilst acting with him 😂
When my dad was little he went to California Disney Land. Goofy stole my dads hat and he chased Goofy until he got his hat back. And captain hook put his hook to my dad's neck😂
Hey Dan, since you're looking at Peter Pan character costumes, can you make a history and evolution of Tinker Bell in the future? (she's as popular as Mickey Mouse, not to mention being a merch queen)
A Captain Hook's hook from Disneyland Paris came up on eBay a few years back. It went for lots of money. But the construction was interesting. It was a very shallow hemisphere, with the hook sticking out on one end and then a horizontal handle on the inside with Velcro around the edges for attaching to the costume. I never liked the way the costume's hook is able to move around, like it's just sitting on the end of a wrist. Captain Hook has no wrist, and they animated that so well in the cartoon - his hook was solid. It never wiggled, bent, changing shape or moved for effect. I don't know why they don't make a hook that extends to the mid arm so that the performer literally cannot move their wrist and thus ruin the illusion of the hook.
Truly a favorite movie of mine. Also a favorite villain. That lovely hair! While I've never experienced the walk around character, I truly would love it. But, yeah, the strap on chin....NOT so much. Topiary Hook. Hilarious, though some kids might end up doing some couch time with a psychiatrist. LOL! BTW, loving your Cpt. hat.
Holy crap! You’re right! He does! Both have similar styles (although Dutch Van Der Linde is more ruthless). “Have some faith, Mr. Smee! I have a plaaaan!”
