What makes this ship so compelling is how impossible it is. Not because of any surrounding opposition to their union, but because of who they are. They deeply love and respect and admire each other, but their philosophies and convictions are incompatible. To be together would mean one or both of them must change who they fundamentally are at their core. So for the sake of self-preservation, they must keep each other at arm’s length. But the feelings are always there.
I remember the old 90s animation of X-men and I think I "shipped" (I was a kid, hence the quotation marks) Xavier & Magneto back then already - one of the "huh" moments was around the 2nd season at the "jungle" part where they responded to a false distress signal, lost their powers temporarily, had to work together, etc I think I also "shipped" Rogue & Gambit a bit? not sure anymore, which just shows they didn't catch my interest much, not even as a kid lol

He's already been persecuted once, and there are few better suited than Charles to truly understand him and his turmoil. My attachment to their relationship means I still have around 50 XMen comics in a box. These majillion years later, now that 'shipping' exists, its great for me to be able to share this ship with others. As for other ships, rogue/gambit is strong for me, as well as jean/logan over jean/scott (even though I absolutely do not adore wolverine as most people see him as a badass and to me he's just a grumpy old man, he's crotchety)

To me one of the best representations of the trust between them is the very end of Apocalypse, where Erik (who has just lost a child as well as found another) allows Charles to teach and protect his son. You'd think that after losing Nina, Erik would be hugely overprotective of Peter, but he trusts Charles enough for Peter to join his team. I love that underlayer of trust they have, when both of them have so many reasons to be distrustful.
I think of these two as practically canon, some of their moments are just too adorable!~ my favorite X-man pairing would have to be Emma Frost and Cyclops, I have a soft spot for that ship.

Question: have you listened to/read the "Winter of the banked fires"? I think that it may be my favourite fic in the Cherik fandom partly because the original author found a way to get them in both when their old and young. Also the podfic has a ton of people reading and is amazing to listen to.

I love Cherik, but I often find it a bit too dark & traumatised for my liking (I like reading good recovery fic, but I often fluff where my faves just get to be happy). I've read SO MANY AUs in this fandom to avoid the beach divorce. Could you do a video on AUs and why people love/hate them? Whenever I want to explore a new ship, I always go to the ship tag Ao3 and filter for Alternate Universe - Modern Settng (English, complete, ranked by kudos). It's my favourite way to explore a fandom but I know to some people that would sound like The Worst. For a fandom with similar themes but a possibility for the pairing to reconcile, there's Les Mis where we as a fandom ignore that small matter of everyone dying, and make everything a modern AU all about politics, identity and arguing with closed friends about how to change the world. I like it because there seems to be more of a possibility for characters to actually work through their differences and be happy. Also I'm French and I'm a sucker for revolutionary imagery. Would love to see a Les Mis episode if you're so inclined. There's so much to pick apart, several relationships in the book itself that can easily be read as queer, plus an upcoming BBC miniseries next year.

I used to have some kind of aversion to romance featuring old people, specially if sexual themes were involved. But then, I watched Vicious, the series with Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi. It was a fun and heartfelt story that made me like and cherish old people romances and appreciate them in a new light. I'd definetly recomend it :)

Question: have you listened to/read the "Winter of the banked fires"? I think that it may be my favourite fic in the Cherik fandom partly because the original author found a way to get them in both when their old and young. Also the podfic has a ton of people reading and is amazing to listen to.

Thank you for this video! It would be amazing if you did a video about cherik fics and fandom, I've noticed there is a lot of newcomers after xma and it would be great for them. I remember how scary and confusing the fandom was for me when I discovered it after dofp. I love Cherik, but I often find it a bit too dark & traumatised for my liking (I like reading good recovery fic, but I often fluff where my faves just get to be happy). I've read SO MANY AUs in this fandom to avoid the beach divorce. Could you do a video on AUs and why people love/hate them? Whenever I want to explore a new ship, I always go to the ship tag Ao3 and filter for Alternate Universe - Modern Settng (English, complete, ranked by kudos). It's my favourite way to explore a fandom but I know to some people that would sound like The Worst.
For a fandom with similar themes but a possibility for the pairing to reconcile, there's Les Mis where we as a fandom ignore that small matter of everyone dying, and make everything a modern AU all about politics, identity and arguing with closed friends about how to change the world. I like it because there seems to be more of a possibility for characters to actually work through their differences and be happy. Also I'm French and I'm a sucker for revolutionary imagery. Would love to see a Les Mis episode if you're so inclined. There's so much to pick apart, several relationships in the book itself that can easily be read as queer, plus an upcoming BBC miniseries next year.

True true it's a very blink and you'll miss it moment for those not in the know. i know all the people I went with missed it or just attributed it the fact that continously hiding the existence of another human in your house could not have made for a fun childhood experience. There's a blink and you'll miss it reference to Charles' Step Father in one scene too (When we first see the bunker Alex trains in) so I find it interesting we never really get any more information about Charles' childhood in the other movies. I used to have some kind of aversion to romance featuring old people, specially if sexual themes were involved. But then, I watched Vicious, the series with Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi. It was a fun and heartfelt story that made me like and cherish old people romances and appreciate them in a new light. I'd definetly recomend it :)

I know Xmen Apocalypse wasn't a better film than its predecessor. But I felt Singer touched upon brilliantly with the vibe going on between Charles and Erik, whilst Apocalypse seemingly was breaking them.
