- Clive Barker is one of my favourite authors of all time. His writing is gorgeous, inventive; his stories are immersive, challenging, often times scary. And while he is known as being one of the best horror writers or best fantasy writers of all time, I believe that there is a Clive Barker book for every kind of reader. So, with that in mind, I have created 6 categories of readers (or reading experiences), and I will recommend a Clive Barker book or two - or three - to satisfy each category. I’ve also created a short slideshow featuring some of the art of Clive Barker and some great contemporary cello and piano music from Alfred Schnittke.

Gotta love an author who can write in different genres and be equally amazing in all of them.
I'm discovering that with Davis Grubb as well now. Brilliant writers cannot be contained by any genre.
A wonderful video Michael Loved the way you categorized Barker's work. I am not a huge fan of Galilee or Sacrament but agree with you on Weaveworld, an absolute masterpiece. The Thief of Always always reminds me of Coraline by Neil Gaiman...be careful what you wish for. The Abarat series is also an excellent YA series, in my opinion. Be careful Michael, that doll behind you looks like it wants your head.😂
I have never read Clive Barker but you have convinced me to give him a try. Also, the doll looking over your shoulder is freaking me out.
Another potential convert! Please let me know how that works out for you if you do give him a go. Cam you believe I found that doll next to the public bins!? It's a rescue doll🙃
@@Michael_Wertenberg LOL! 👶
Pefection❤
This was great! I’m currently-finally-reading Books of Blood and loving the stories so far and will be reading Damnation Game in March.
Damnation game is so good! Hope you love it!
Nice. 😁I'll be checking out your review 😁
I'm Clive Barker fan* too, from Poland❤
Hi Aleksandra. I'm a Clive Barker fan, formerly from Poland. I lived in Sopot then Warsaw then Krakow. I have good memories of Poland. Great country; great people! Thanks for saying hi😁
Of course fan.😂 Sorry for mistake. I'm still learning English. Glad you like Poland.
I didn't notice the mistake. I missed it. But it's all good😁@@AXAhaja
Imajica is possibly my favourite book, no other fantasy I have read comes close to it. I really enjoyed books of blood too. I own all three Abarats, have yet to read them but the art is lovely.
I forgot to mention Abarat in the video!!
It’s hard to top a video that includes Schnittke, Barker art work, and Barker books. Thank you!
😁
This is great. I've never read anything by Clive Barker, but your video has me convinced. As a writer as well, I'm fascinated by his ideas and story premises. I wonder if he writes intuitively (I'm guessing yes), or if he works from an outline. Anyway, really enjoy your channel, I never miss a video. Thanks.
Thanks for the kind words 😀I would love to interview Clive Barker and ask him that question😁Some of his epic works are too complex not to be outlined, I'd imagine
THE SCARLET GOSPELS😊 was also a good horror choice.
Agreed! Also great for world-building. What a tour of hell!
I haven't read Thief of always but I need to! Weaveworld is one of my favorite books ever, but I had to DNF Coldheart canyon. Guess you could say he's been hit or miss with me. That baby doll behind you Michael? Pretty sure it wants to take your soul, or someones soul.😂😳
I found that poor doll near the public bins😢People be throwing away perfectly good soul-stealing dolls!
@@Michael_Wertenberg 🤣🤦♀️
Where would you fit The Scarlet Gospels? It's a tricky one, I know - hints of Pinhead/The Priest and Harry D'Amour and also a lot in common with a book I read a few years back called The Devil's Detective.
I loved The Scarlet Gospels, actually. Controversial, I know. A lot of Clive Barker fans hate on it, but I thought the tour of hell was amazing. And it's emphasis on loneliness, rather than torture, in hell was quite effective. I've just read the synopsis for The Devils' detective by Simon Kurt Unsworth. Sounds really good (and yes quite similar to The Scarlet Gospels). Thanks for putting that one on my radar.
Hi Michael, I recently found your channel and have been enjoying it, thanks a lot for the videos you're putting out. Before this video I ate up your Adam Nevill ranking one, then watched the interview with him. Thanks for those! Curious about a Clive Barker book you didn't mention here but one that I recently purchased off of another booktuber's recommendation -- "Cabal". Do you have an opinion about it? Thanks.
Hi Michael. I love the comment! Thanks for taking the time. I'm hesitant to give you my thoughts on Cabal. Since you've recently purchased it, why not read it and come back and tell me what you think? We can talk about it then, yeah? I'd hate to spoiler or influence your read. But, if that doesn't work for you, I do talk about Cabal in my Ranking the Clive Barker Novels video (one of the 1st videos I ever made for this channel). I'll be curious to hear what you think of Cabal. Please let me know.
@@Michael_Wertenberg I respect and really like your response! I do not like spoilers or to be influenced, I just wasn't sure if you had read it. I'll get back to you on Cabal after reading it. I have a few scheduled before it but eventually I'll let you know.
As a teenager, aside from reading tons of D&D and related content, I was into Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, and Piers Anthony.
But then someone gave me Weaveworld right when it came out and I was blown away!
Clive Barker was not Robert Frost, and The Fugue was definitely not Die Kunst der…
That's a teenager with eclectic tastes!
