    That's a beauty of a Strat. I just found a lefty Yamaha Pacifica 112 used for $150 CAD or 85 pounds. It needs some tlc, but after all the positive reviews and watching John pick one up and redoing it, I'm going the same route. As it has a swimming pool rout for the pickups, I'm keeping the original humbucker, but am adding a P90 in the middle and a filtertron clone for the neck. The natursl grain is going to be refinished as a matte dark cherry, kind of like the SG. The white pickguard is switched out for a black one and the knobs and switch tip, as well. Of course, a set up with my preferred action, which is one the low side. The trem will be blocked, too. Can't wait to get it done. (My luthier will be busy!)

    Lovely sound straight out of the box - but I'm biased as I bought one last October and adore it. It's maybe because you were plugged into a practice amp rather into your computer the way you normally are but it just sounded fuller and more natural than either your signature model or your previous Gordon Smith. (I suspect we're not hearing what you're hearing with the usual setup.)
    Add an overdrive pedal, even on a mild setting, and the lead sound really comes alive - especially on the neck pickup but even the middle one starts to sound more useful.
    Mine also came well set up and with a low-ish action which I tweaked very easily. I do find I need to adjust the truss rod occasionally but that's because I'm in the Julian Alps and the temperature has swung between -20C and +36C over the last 8 months! It's dead stable otherwise. I don't use the trem but yeah, Fender really need to sort those awful arm mounts.
    I know you're more of a Tele man but you immediately seemed at home with it. If I was you I'd keep it.

    Unboxing, thanks! Player series is awesome! The Player Alnico 5 pups sound great. I love my crimson Player Lead II, the unloved model that no one wants (which got me a great deal). I don't miss the Strat middle pup at all and I used to use it all the time on my 1980s Squier, maybe the pup angle compensates a bit. I was doubtful before trying, but turns out the Pau Ferro fretboard is a lot like ebony, very slippery and fast, I like it over rosewood or maple. Only improvement needed is the fret ends aren't rolled as nice as my Korean SE, but they don't sprout or scratch on my version.

    After selling my USA professional strat (Seina burst) i bought the player strat HSS in white and a player tele in butterscotch . Both fantastic guitars and in MHO as good as the USA Pro for the average player like me. Fender have really upped their game with the player series.good review JR hope you are well..long time since I have seen you in person.

    Am a big fan John and hate to correct you but plenty of big strat stars do play on the middle pickup. Clapton stays on the middle pickup and SRV uses it a lot. I see this happening more and more. Been playing strats for 40 years and I never use the middle pup, but more and more do.
    I like your channel so much I would tune in here and there to watch you unbox just about anything!

      I would love to read or see more on the subject. Hopefully someone will make a video on that sometime. I like the middle pick-up myself but I also noticed how Hendrix used only bridge and neck at Woodstock. I think I'll take a look at that 2005 Cream concert and watch Clapton.

    That's the guitar I wanted but it was out of stock at the time. I ended up with a buttercream one, and like yours mine came beautifully setup. I mentioned this in my comments on your last video on shopping around - I found the saddles to be awful and am interested to know what you think when you change the strings.

    That's a beautiful guitar man!
    I've never been a fan of the 3 tone sunburst with a maple board, but this one looks nice :)
    As far as I know, the Player Series has never had those tiny skinny blocks.
    The push in trem arm you get on the American models, so that's probably one of the things they "cheap out" on for us to buy the US ones instead.

      Fenders fret level are usually not good. The radius requires level frets. In the 80s a lot of artist bought warmoth necks or they pulled the frets and flattened the radius then refret. Buy a used fender contemporary and send the player back. I was extremely disappointed with the 90s USA model I had.

    Great sounding strat, you have been lucky to get a well set up sample with no fret sprout.
    Not all new Fenders arrive in this condition, unless you pay for a full setup.

    The only issue I had with my mim strat was a very dry rosewood fret board. What's your opinion John, about springs should they be straight or angled in on the tremolo? I know it's a pet peeve at Dave's world of fun.

    • @phililpb
      @phililpb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My new gibson also had a very dry rosewood board. some lemon oil improved things but I thing it is just down to the woods that are now available to the manufactures

    • @Leo_ofRedKeep
      @Leo_ofRedKeep 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your bridge is set floating with light strings, tension on the springs can become so low they fall out when pulling up. Angling them can help mitigating this (the angle puts the spring under more tension than it exerts on the bridge). An alternative is to go down to two springs.

    Can't help thinking how outdated this thing is. Single coil at the bridge, square neck heel, string trees, two tone knobs, pickguard… My HSS Ibanez SA from 2006 is better in every aspect.

    • @whatspadethinks
      @whatspadethinks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uh Leo of Red Keep, Ibanez SA's are a completely different type of guitar. It's made for fast lead work and playing through high gain solid state amps. Stratocaster's that share much of the original 1950's & 1960's features are produced that way because that's what a large segment of guitarists & especially beginners want. They want a guitar that resembles that of the guitar players they idolize.
      People who play songs or rhythm guitar in bands & at church don't need or want a neck through body guitar with a Floyd Rose. Different guitars exist for different players & players needs. If you're happy with your Ibanez, great. But perhaps you should research how the Super Strat guitars came to be and how Ibanez and a litany of other companies are in business because they're making Stratocaster's with some mods done in factory...Spade of Purple Bung
