- Dominions 6 is the latest game in a venerable series of fantastic fantasy strategy games from Illwinter Games Design. Without a doubt one of the most complex and potentially intimidating video games ever made, it is also incredibly playable and fun, and in this single player series, I hope to show how the game can be played in a thematic way that plays to the lore of the game.
This series will be suitable as a tutorial to the game for new players as I look at the game rules and mechanics quite thoroughly. However, I'd probably advise not playing Feminie as a new player as the Late Age is rather punishing and requires some knowledge of the mechanics to really do well. That said, you can play ANY age and nation as a beginner if you set the difficulty a little easier, and remember to put AI nations on Defensive so that they don't declare war on you too early!
This game is released on January 17th, 2024 and will available on Steam.
Thanks!
Hey man, I really, really appreciate that! Very kind of you, thanks for supporting me and the channel :)
@@battlemode you've earned it the past couple of weeks.
Got a few more provinces and two forts under construction in my Feminie game now.
I hire mostly indy crossbows as I have 4 or 5 provinces of those.
The Lady Knights are definitely a great heavy cavalry unit.
The Veiled Ones are pretty good too, especially with the Etherealness bless.
They have good stats and the new Mirror Image works incredible well with high defense and/or protection units.
I am currently making squads of 1 Unseen One and 5 Veiled Ones bodyguards. Two of those took down a lightly defended indy province without any trouble. Got the Unseen Ones on Bless, Blur, Blur, Luck, Luck and then advance and cast spells.
Going to test those a bit more but I think they might make pretty good expansion parties. They are also stealthy 90 and might do well as raiding parties in later wars.
The combination of a length 3 repeal weapon, Blur, 12 attack and defense skill, decent armor, then Etherealness and finally mirror image and luck makes it really really hard to kill them with normal combat. So far I am definitely a fan.
I haven't used the other infantry units thanks to a lack of recruitment locations with enough resources.
This all sounds like great advice. btw the Swordswomen unit is also pretty good, especially with Blur cast on it. Militia just can't hit Def 15 with Attack 9.
Stealth 90 is really high, they're gonna be great raiders.
@@battlemode
Yeah. Just tried a second expansion with a harder province.
Three Unseen Ones and 14 Veiled Ones just beat 23 Heavy Cav, 25 Light Cav and 35 Militia. Easy win. One loss.
Though two are diseased and will not live long.
Dominions has, up until now, been one of those games that I really like in principle, but I suck bad enough at it that I don't actually enjoy playing it as much as I expected. The only "playstyle" I've found myself enjoying in single player, back in Dominions 4 and 5, was Early Age Helheim with Valkyrie paratroopers using broken Blessings (like Etherealness; or Stygian Flesh and dipping into something else as well); plus a whole lot of dangerous Undead in the endgame. I kinda moved on from the series when Dominions 5, after about 20 hours of play, still felt a lot like a minor update being sold as a whole new game, but watching you play Dominions 6, I'm starting to reconsider.
I think the pacing is better for SP now that there's an expectation of larger armies and a more extending build-up period. I started with Dom 5 but didn't continue after my first 20 hrs or so. Dom 6 still might ultimately be a game where I enjoy the process of building a pretender for a faction more than playing the 4x game, but it feels good so far
That's cool. I would probably replay Dominions 5 a little first to make sure, I don't want you to buy Dom6 and for it to sit in your games library unplayed. I strongly believe that Dom6 is a far better single player game now, but I like the series a lot and so I find it more difficult to put myself in the position of someone who played before but wasn't totally enthralled by it.
Awesome - new episode!!
Amen!
Thanks guys!
Really been enjoying your playthrough. Very helpful for those interested in SP. It helps demonstrate that certain mistakes/setbacks arent necessarily game ending
Thanks! Yeah it's generally fine, you don't have to play optimally on Normal once you know the ropes, but a mistake during a war can be more difficult to recover from.
New channel Icon?
5:16 It's also raining, so a fire spell would have twice the fatigue cost it normally has. False fire does not have that problem.
5:59 It sometimes takes a bit for a squad to switch to routing.
10:33 Mirror Images work the following: If the enemy gets a hit through they have an equal chance of hitting each image or the real body. So with 2 images you have a 1/3 chance of hitting the real target. If a mirror image is hit, it vanishes. The hit on the image only seems to trigger if there is actual damage being dealt. Ranged fire seems to ignore mirror images completely. At least I rewatched a battle and the mirror images only negated melee damage despite a lot of arrow hits. So mirror images seem to work best with high defense and/or high protection units that don't mind getting shot at.
19:06 The militia always harassing females. *shakes head* XD
22:14 No dominion, no research.
23:33 You started out as Dominion 6. Now you got 5 temples. So 7 is right.
24:43 Yep, I have done the same replacement already.
28:21 One exception is the capital. Nations often have units that can be only recruited there. So building a fort next to your capital might hurt you in that regard if you want to produce more of those units but can't because the fort took the resources for your capital.
Yeah the old "placeholder" stuff stayed there way too long, this is more like what I was after. It's supposed to be funny, hope that comes across.
That's a big change to the old "glamour" stuff then, where it was popped by missile fire.
Well spotted on the Dominion score, I coulda sworn it was 7 :D

Thanks, I'll be back to Dominions at some point soon
I don't know how the AI works; does it remember what provinces you own? I'm not expecting an answer to that any time soon, but it's a question worth asking oneself.
Beause it seems to me that preaching in a border province before you got a fort up, might not be the best idea. Considering the AI could see it as a neutral province, free to grab without any diplomatic repercussions: Like when AI Marignon suddenly sails into a fort in progress from across the sea, it seems to have plausible deniability according to the mechanics.
If the province is neutral and you bump them trying to take it, there's the plausible deniability thing. If the AI knows it's your province, then they're declaring war, and it will know if you own it (I think, even with this hiding Dominions thing Feminie has)
You got me interested in this game. I do love these minimal visual lots of lore and complexity even though I'm not very good at them. What you reccomend for a starter nation?
Good question. I'd avoid Late Age as it's a bit more difficult to get the better magic going without Communions/Sabbaths.
Early Age or Middle Age Ulm would be a good pick, they've got very strong national troops, somewhat limited but strong magic paths, great ability to create magic items and their commanders are strong enough that you can boost them up with a few buff spells and items and they'll go chop down small armies with just a handful of them.
Alternatively you could take a Regeneration bless on EA Niefelheim and run around with regenerating Niefel Giants, that's always fun. They're quite a complex nation once you get used to the game but the giants will have you ROFL-stomping the AI on the lower settings.
Definitely make sure the AI is set to "Defensive", which will ensure they don't attack you until around turn 30, by the you'll have worked the game out a bit and gotten your feet.
