Amazing photography and info on a species of butterfly we don’t get to see in PA. However we planted pawpaw trees in our yard not just to enjoy their tropical-like fruit, but to attract the zebra swallowtail butterfly. After about 10 years of waiting a zebra swallowtail showed up and laid eggs on new growth of the pawpaw tree a little over a week ago. I brought them indoors so we can observe the life cycle. So fascinating!! My motto has become “You plant it, they’ll come.” Last year we had 4 spicebush caterpillars on spicebush, monarchs on common milkweed and black swallowtail on fennel. Even found a cecropia moth cocoon which hatched in June. So amazing. Loved your video and sense of wonder conveyed through your voice. Thx!

Thanks so much Heather, couldn't agree more! Most of the credit goes to my Dad on this one, who has been patiently watching and filming these guys do their thing for over a year. Hope you all are well, miss seeing you and the fam in person!

We just caught 2 of these caterpillars from our back yard. Thank you so much for all the great info. We were curious and this answered every question we had.

This hyper metamorphosis process, that we take for granted every day... when we see a butterfly, you can’t even adapt this to a production of a science fiction movie. Speechless.
Thanks a lot, for the info.

Wonderful work, is this your photography? Also love your house...my father used to design houses (in Florida) just like yours. Thanks so much...I remember the clusters of butterflies as a child, but only saw individuals on my last visit. :/

Please clarify the mating of Zebra Longwings. If they do not mate shortly after emerging, will they ever mate

To my knowledge, mating only occurs directly after hatching while the emergent female's wings are drying

How many eyes do caterpillars actually have?
