I would add that, no matter how many street fights you've been in, humble yourself & learn from those younger than you & who have had different experiences in their country. The number of fights you've been in doesn't always matter, because they could've been mostly low quality fighters. Someone with fewer fights can still be far more skilled than you, if their training something cutting edge like IFO Jeet Kune Do ... which is Bruce Lee's art. Thanks to Thomas Marx for sharing that timeless, core tool from JKD that could certainly save a life.
I've been saying this for several years, because people act like a knife assault is a death sentence. The knife is a lifeless tool, it's the attacker you need to pull the plug on. No one wants to be in a knife fight. I've been in at least three & always used the side kick long range & JKD street grappling ( not sport ) to groin kick at close range. You are fortunate if it's long range, because you can see the weapon & distance is your friend. If you think a swift, crushing side kick to the knee won't stop a knife attacker, then you've never seen a real JKD side kick. I've met John Paul Daily twice, he has incredible power in his side kick, and I've been around this long enough to know that someone like Thomas Marx could cripple you with his side kick. So do the math, the side kick is the longest, safest weapon if you train it.
Great explanation, love the slow-mos. The only thing that ends the fight in your favor is when you manage to land a good attack. Thomas always shows great examples where you can do this as early as possible. Every second wasted on grabbing and trapping and "controlling" is only prolonging the fight, thats not something you want. Finish him, be safe.
I wish people would be peaceful and not stab each other/shoot each other, weapons should only be used for hunting, and for self defense you use your body, but in an ideal world, altercations wouldn’t go as far as needing to put the other person down with brutal stuff like JKD, very nice video.
This is so insane!!! Retitle to " How to get stabbed in the name of a Bruce Lee Fanboy".... Parrying a knife!!!!! Sir you have never been stabbed....the adrenaline and mindset of someone with a knife.....an eye jab will just piss him off
Did you even watch the video ? He shows parrying as last resort and the best thing to do is distance + side kick, eye jab works even against a lion so I don’t know what nonsense you’re talking about…

Would like to see more skilled, self defense geared system instructors like Yourself and a few others. Ramsey and " Company " were often Atrocious, and because they dont train " self defense " they had VERY few good answers. Good job👍
Usually a person who wants to attack you with a knife he doesn't previously show you the knife. Most cases when certain people were stabbed or cut with a knife were attacked by surprise. That's why you are right in saying that keeping distance is very important because you don't know if that guy has a knife he's hiding

One inch punch is a demonstration technique, that shows the effect of putting the body weight behind the punch. JKDs jab is the straight lead. There are two videos about this on this channel already.
@Bartron Flat Earth the one inch punch is from wing chun and how it’s done is vastly different from the straight lead. The one inch punch is done from a standing position with your fist a few inches away and no stepping. The straight lead is done by using your whole body with momentum. No need to jab since it just comes from the arm with hardly any power.

You have a threat in front of you, why are you waiting? Attack him first. Action beats reaction and you cannot read the attackers mind. If someone threatens you with a gun do you wait for the trigger to be pulled or do you move first? Why are you treating a knife any different?
Using jkd principles...

The counter I like most is that kick to the knee as you lean back, then sprint out of there! By kicking his lead knee you have a great head start.
Remember there could be other people waiting to jump you.
This depends on how he steps forward, basically force him to do that, by keeping distance.
@Wolfgath
I think it is the hook kick that has less power if you lean back.
Very nice stuff. I appreciate your work
Hey Mr Marx,..how have you been?...thank you sir for another great lesson,..you the man !!
The best knife defense ever was in Punisher 2004 when the guy was waving the knife around and got a punch in the nose for it haha
