Otherwise, he wouldn't have turned so easily when Roshi managed to make him open his eyes. His villainy was more a case of him being what was expected of him, and obsessing over upholding the Crane School's honor. As opposed to if we look at somebody like Tao, who sincerely enjoyed the assassin's life.
@gurvmlk he really did think he had killed Goku when he apparently crushed him with that tree. He didn't seem remorseful at all for killing what he thought was a normal kid. I don't think you're grasping how heinous a crime he committed because it's just a cartoon, and the action is dressed up in a way that desensitizes you to violence and the severity of everyone's actions.
TLDR; Tien thought he killed a kid for discovering his scam, and he didn't bat an eye.
