- Our first foal of 2024 has arrived! And a bit sooner than we had anticipated!!! We believe this foal came a wee bit on the earlier side, right around 330 days. Which is the earliest a foal can be born and not be considered a premie. He is definitely on the smaller side for a foal and by far the smallest we have ever had. He is just adorable though and we are smitten with this sweetheart! We so not have a name picked out yet but will let everyone know once we do! This foal is a Missouri Foxtrotter and will be registered.

If foals are slow going at first, I've milked out mares and given foals a bottle while they are still down, just to make sure they've gotten the fuel they need to get going. Safety first. If they have a belly full of colostrum the bonding and nursing thing can take whatever time it takes then and the two can be left to it.
This was so frustrating to watch. I worked at a race horse farm and after the first hour we helped the baby get up and nurse to get that colostrum as soon as possible. It wasn't because we wanted to go to bed either because we had a night watch for everybody. This baby was extra small and weak and I think proper attention was not given soon enough. They are lucky he survived. Poor little guy. 😍

With small full term foals that are showing sign of being weak, which is not rare when born at 330 days, milking the mare and getting colostrum into the foal is what I prefer. Equine labor is almost always set off when, for whatever reason, the placenta determines it no longer can support the foal and the mares body determines that the foal would be better out where it could nurse for its resources that the placenta can no longer deliver. In so many small foals born closer to 330 than 360 we actually see some issue when we inspect the afterbirth. That last 30 days is doing nothing for a foal development wise but packing on the calories and making sure that at birth they have extra resources, in body fat, to have energy they need until they nurse. No one is going to frown on you about intervention when a foal is born at the edge of prematurity, because 330 days, in that case is a number only, and you have to look at Size, weight, hair coverage, leg strength and do on.
Your mare has been a mother before and her apparent behavior where she is more interested in eating then bonding, is also a worrying sign that the placenta was not working as well as it should and she did not get a big load of hormones normally sent by the placenta once the foal is separated that urges her to bond.
Most well handled mares will be willing to be milked for a few ounces, if for no othet reason that by the time the foal is born that bag is overfill and its pretty uncomfortable. Letting the foal bottle feed some colostrum, or dribbling it in their mouths so they swallow it, is going to give a small foal resources they were born without having. I am against using a tube unless it's placed by a vet or vet assistant or someone who places tube in foals on a regular basis as it's easier for that tube to end up in the lungs than the stomach. It's easy to know if you get in lungs instead of stomach in an adult equine as they will be blowing throught the tube like a wind tunnel, but in a foal it's easy to feel no air movement.
Afew ounces of colostrum given time to digest can turn a weak and shaky foal with no balance into one that acts like it was carried nearly 12 months. Also, milking the mare relieves the pressure on her bag so it's not too tender as the foal starts looking to latch on and having her pull away and with less pressure o the bag and behind the teats is so much easier for a foal to latch on. We have seen this happen a lot with a goal easily latch on to a bottle nipple, which has no real tension behind it, and then struggle to latch on to the mare unless the teats start leaking and enough is lost to relieve pressure or the mare milked.
@@rentechpad I agree with everything you have laid out but six hours was a little excessive. The guy was already getting involved anyway. These people seemed like backyard breeders to me. Hope the little guy turned out OK but as for him growing up to be big enough for them to ride, maybe they both should think about losing some weight first.

It is imperative that foals get that colostrum within the first 1-2 hours. As small and weak as he was I would have made sure he had some of his mom's milk within the 1st hour. It's a miracle he's alive after having to struggle for so long.

You as a breeder should know better than what you did or should I say did not do. When that baby was that small and it took that long to nurse or even stand up a vet should have been called immediately that mare doesn’t really care that much about that baby as you can tell, she walked away to eat. Most mare will not do that. She didn’t even clean her baby off. I would not breed her again that’s for sure but you’re wrong for not calling a vet for that baby. Not trying to be nasty but just from a breeders point you didn’t do the right thing that should’ve been called immediately.

A man's fleece vest works a treat as a horse blanket for a newborn. We used oneon our stallion when he was born on a particularly cold May morning. That one is really shivering. He's got enough problems with out getting chilled into the bargain

@@juliepdem5275 Same-same for my mini babies. For my first one, I had no idea just how tiny he was going to be. I cut the legs off an old pair of sweatpants, trimmed to length, and voila! Instant baby sweater!
The most common reasons for a foal coming early besides stress are either Mama had an infection and/or inflammation of the placenta (google placentitis) or her progesterone dropped too low a bit too soon this can be remedied with regumate obtained from your vet... maybe if you breed her again talk to them about testing her levels during pregnancy or putting her on it as a preventative. Since there is still some cold nights with as tiny has he is I would try to get him a foal blanket (large size dog coat would do in a pinch) to help him hold in his body heat. Hopefully everything will go fine with him ...looks like he's gotten the hang of the basics though eating and pooping ... very important to little horses! Praying all goes well for him and his Mama.

"Dog coat" is good thinking outside the box! I had miniatures for several years, and my first miniature foal took me by surprise, as to how small the foals are. It was still pretty cold, and he was shaking a lot, so once she'd licked him mostly dry, I cut the legs off an old pair of sweatpants. Cut off at the knees, the "thigh" portion of my sweatpants fit him perfectly. He stood around 17" at the withers and weighed 22 lbs.
Congrats on your beautiful foal! I think the amount of intervention was 100% necessary. There’s a 1-2-3 rule/guideline (whatever you want to call it) with foaling - 1 hour to stand, 2 hours to nurse, 3 hours to pass placenta. If those things aren’t progressing, it’s better to intervene than lose the mare or foal. There are two things that I would recommend. First, due to the late nursing and general weakness, I would get a vet out to do bloodwork - CBC & IgG (might be too late for IgG if you’re past the first 24 hours). The later they nurse, the higher the risk of infection. Second, please look into using straw in your foaling area instead of shavings, it’s a pain to clean but a lot safer. Foals can inhale the shavings and get pneumonia. Also, because they absorb moisture, shavings can harbor a lot of bacteria.
After tossing hundreds of stalls in a racing barn, I have to admit that shavings were the bane of our existence, LOL. It doesn't take long for the ammonia smell to start either--gotta toss that stall ASAP. Was so glad when the trainer switched to straw.

Do you have a Veterinarian? Why didn’t you milk your mare and get that foal the colostrum he needed right away? I apologize for being blunt, but you should not be breeding mares until you have been better educated. It isn’t cute or funny to be irresponsible. You should have had the Vet out that morning. You are “worried he won’t get big enough for you to ride”. It isn’t about you; it is about being knowledgeable enough to know what your animals need.

Ich hätte bei so einem schwachen Fohlen eher eingegriffen und es auch trockengerieben. Die nasse Umhüllung kühlt das Baby aus, wenn sie nicht von der Mutter entfernt wird. Die Mutter war nicht gerade interessiert; da muss der Mensch ran, wenn ihm etwas am Fohlen liegt.
Und die Erstmilch ist so wichtig für das Baby, das ja so viel Schwierigkeiten beim Stehenbleiben schon hatte. Für mich sah das aus wie eine Frühgeburt. Es tat mir leid. So ein schwaches und trotzdem kämpfendes Fohlen sollte auch gewärmt werden

Hey all. I probably didn’t add enough information to this video. He did not need a supplement bottle or anything like that because he got the hang of nursing and was doing good on his own. Mamas milk is best if possible. Thankfully it was possible for this little guy. We did not need to get our vet involved because he only progressed and got stronger hour by hour. If he would have regressed then the story would obviously be different. I totally forgot to add a size comparison to the video as well!!! But for example, his full sister, Rain was born at 94lbs and then the other foals last year were well over 100 lbs and happy was either 84 or 86 lbs (need to double check on that). His sire, Bob was around 120 lbs (which is big for an MFT foal) but it kinda gives you an idea of how small he is lol.
I wonder if there was an element of growth restriction during the pregnancy considering the size difference?

So glad that he was able to nurse from mother as mother's milk always is best but mother animals if there is an issue mother animals can always be milked and that milk given to a baby if the struggle is being a bit much to get a very little one just started (he was looking weak and very exhausted there, it looked like this situation could have gone either way). I don't think it would be good to wait till a very small baby is actually on a decline as it probably would decline at a faster rate than one which is of a normal size and would be harder to recover from any actual decline.
(when breeding animals it's best to always have a bottle/ with teat available for the animal type to be able to be used, in case of emergency. Though we didn't breed horses I grew up on a farm with various kinds of animals we breed and this was a precaution we always had in place thou rarely needed "just in case").
Maybe make your own action plan for future eg if a baby doesn't feed within so many hours (consider a little sooner than a normal sized animal, think of human preemie babies, they can't go as long without as normal babies eg very small human babies may be fed 2hrly instead of 4hrly. I've no idea what is recommended for very small horses. Please speak to your vet for how long it is recommended for a very small foal which is exhausted and already weak if you don't know. (I'm concerned this could have gone bad and from the video it wasn't clear if you knew what that kind of recommendation would be for one that small).. In the wild maybe this foal would have died. Happy in this situation you tried to aid him and help him to stand.
@rebeccaaaaaaaac l think it's just that he was born just on the cusp of the right date..about 5 days earlier and he would have been classed as a preemie..JR explained this in the live video they did..
Gosh, he is very tiny then…just over half his dad’s weight at birth! I think this little’Tiny Tim’ will have a very special place in all our hearts. We’ll thoroughly enjoy watching him progress & grow. He’s a Golden too & watching his colour develop will be lovely 🎁💝🐴

@@Savannahisme-e66 fault is a big word...maybe it was a DUMB foal whereby the hormones didn't change during the pressure in the birth canal. There seems to be this rope therapy to copy the pressure after birth again ( with very soft ropes) so the foal is "reset" and gets active. In the womb these hormones are necessary to keep the foal calm and don't injure the mum
Understandable, another video i have seen it was the same thing that the foal wasn't helped to the teat not getting enough colostrum and they are struggling with his health.
Using my extensive knowledge of horses (not) he's a goody, a plucky little dude with a great attitude a good mum and his early interactions with humans were positive. Looking forward to seeing how he turns out

Seven was born at 286 days gestation. She has been saying that prior to 310 days is considered a miscarriage. Seven isn't just small, I think he was 47 lbs at around a week old, he's a micro premie. He's at what would be 318/319 (320 is what is considered safe) day of his gestation and is 32/33 days old. This little guy my guess is closer to 320 than 340. If you saw Trudy's baby she didn't have much of a mane either and she was born at 322.
It's good to know other horsepeople are dealing with these preemies and having success! The horse world is not a bubble...they support each other and exchange ideas. Don't be so miserable guys!

I know I’m a month late, but I would recommend bottle feeding if this ever happens again. As others said it’s super important that the foal gets colostrum really quickly and without it they can get sick, stay weak, or freeze. Learned enough from watching Sandi Brock’s lambings to know that getting the baby fed is super important. Bottle babies aren’t a bad thing if that’s what’s necessary to get baby to live

I watch FRESIAN HORSES channel on TH-cam. They say a foal needs to stand up by the first hour and nurse or it may be too weak to survive. One of the foals had trouble because of weakness. That foal ended up getting extra milk from the owner mixing it up in a bucket from a supplement. The foal was given milk 5xs a day at first and eventually after the foal was getting a good coat and muscle showing and started playing and running a lot.
Not criticizing at all. I love your little foal and think he's so cute. Just help him find the udder and milk. Sometimes they need to be guided to it.❤

But Uniek has gone to heaven and I picture her happily racing through vast fields of flowers with tail flagged and head held high in delight. And Yvonne will be reunited with her when she arrives there, too. We all will be given the chance to see our beloved animal and human family on the other side, hopefully.
I'm glad Uniek went fast. She deserved a swift departure. She was a beautiful and treasured and gentle horse. And she got to see her new offspring, Belle, before she left us. ❤️🩹🙂

@@dl7596that's true about Reintje's foal needing extra milk due to her mom only giving milk in 1 udder. I'm happy that things worked out for this tiny foal who seems to be doing so well, now. I think he is going to be a fiesty one. He's gaining weight very well and I really do think he had Divine intervention at the start. God always watches and lends a hand to the innocent. Many of us were horrified that no help was being given to this little one at the beginning but Jesus was there. It seems these owners are learning as they go. There is more that needs to be done here but I believe they will see what they need to do by watching Freesian Horses and whatever other learning tools they look into. I love their horses. The palomino male is beautiful! This new little one will be as well, I think.

Straw is a much better bedding for mares & foals so they are not struggling to breathe, and immediate sterilization of the umbilical cord w/iodine is essential to prevent infection

It seems wild horses do fine without iodine though I’m sure they have lower foal survival rates.
Which one of the foals was it last year (Rain? Lakota?) who popped right up and was bouncing around on their feet, almost playing almost immediately? So glad he's making it! Chablis really was amazing in her sensitivity to him.

I was brought up on a stud farm, we were taught that the foals should get the colostrum within first hour after being born , sometimes we had to take the milk from the mare and bottle feed. We also used large dog blankets to keep the foals warm . He’s so cute and yes she a great mama

I agree with most comments,as a horse and several foals born,I never left mom alone,made sure the birth went okay,when born they get some colostrum from moms milk.the foal should have a blanket over her.😢 you need to be schooled on what and how when your mare is giving birth.your lucky the baby is alive.knowledge is empowering.good luck in the future.I hope he grows up nice and strong.God Bless

When I have to crawl under my desk to plug in some sockets, and have to stand up, sometimes I feel very much like this colt when I try to stand up. The spirit is trying but the flesh is still weak, I guess.

It makes me wonder about horses in the wild and how they deal with such complications? What would this colt's prospects be, undersized in a wild herd. This shows how mutually beneficial such relationships are between people and our animal friends.

The first couple days and colostrum are so important. Looks like a lovely colt just so tiny. Put a large dog or smaller foal blanket on him. It’s just 2 peice with a Velcro belly wrap. Didn’t see you do the iodine on his umbilical stump very important. The corral is great keep foal inside safe but foal could wiggle under the bottom rail and find himself outside the corral. I have seen that happen hope you have a camera to check hourly. He is a beauty and mamma so patient and attentive. Get mamma extra vit/mineral cubes. I had a foal several years ago almost exact circumstances and even mare and foal color. So little but tough little booger anf hit the ground running ! He matured to normal size and was fine! Good luck with your treasure. BTW our colt looked like his hair was painted on! Lol!

What a little doll he is. And he is an itty-bitty, but seems very healthy. I have minis, and my mare's last foal is now a 4 year old mare. Of course, mini foals are tiny---Rhiannon was 17 pounds, and stood 18 inches at the withers as a newborn. She's now 280 pounds, and 36 inches tall. Enjoy your new baby boy. (Jan Griffiths).

Foaling manager for 20 years here. I'm going to be a Debby downer. Foaling should be done on hay or straw. Shavings has an increased possibility of infection and particles can contaminate the mare and get in the foal's nostrils. Colts are notorious for being slow to figure out nursing. I agree with others that the mare should have been milked and that milk fed to the foal. A small, weak foal needs immediate calories. This pen is not suitable for this mare and foal. I have seen foals roll under the rails of fences like this.

Agree with thr many comments. 5 hours struggling before first feeding, colt premature and unable to stand, door wide open no blanket, mother uninterested. All reasons for human intervention were present yet you just stood watching making how cute comments for over 5 hours.

Ha ha, unlike humans…animals know what to do how to handle what is going on. I have had a few dogs, cats, birds have babies. I am amazed at how creatures handle their pregnancy, labor & delivery. Babies of all creatures do have enough nutrients from the momma to last for a number of hours. But it is a help to get both momma & baby together perhaps to help the baby suckle. The colostrum helps to perk the babies up, like a fortified milk.

But the mare looks like she would have been babies before! I mean you stand there and laugh , I would have been in deffentley sorrow that he will survive in this weak condition!!! On your earlier video that introduced him and you said you were savjng the weight for a surprise, i had posted a guess if 60-70 pounds, so I was pretty close. Actually from a vet's point of view even if he was born on day 330 of gestation counted from when she was last with a stallion you most likely have a premie there. Prematurity is not diagnosed just by days counted but by other factors also.
First, conception does not always happen immediately once an animal is fertilized. While humans, great apes and primates only have a usual delay of mere hours, it can be longer. In equines it actually can be the conception occurs up to a day or so later so counting 330 days from the last time the stallion was with her could still mean that geststional age was really 328-329 days. Prematurity is not only diagnosed just from calendar counting but development of the fetus. You can have a foal that is considered premature born as far into a pregnancr as 338 days, with give and take to that as well.
Height, and weight for the breed, by the charts would set him on the curve as a late premie. His lack of body fat that should have been forming in some areas by 310 days gestation and noticable at birth, is not. From what was said about his hair and mane and from the look at his tail and tail movement is also indicative of prematurity.
This is not the mares fault, given as she us healthy but mist likely it was a problem with the placenta not having been as healthy as it should or it was in a bad posituon in the womb. When you have an early or underweight foal examination of the placenta can very often tell you the story. The placenta will set off labor to deliver a fetus when it no longer is able to provide what a fetus needs. This is natures way of trying to give the fetus a chance, hoping that out in thr world mom can feed it and it gets what the placenta could no longer provide in calories to grow. There are some rare cases where the mare has had uterine damage that has gone unnoticed and left scars behind where the placenta either cannot attach or if it does the scar tissue keeps the placenta from establishing a good blood supply there. You may well consider about halfway through the next time you breed her to get a ultrsound with a placenta flow study done. If the placenta isnt working effectively no matter the groceries the mare consumed what the fetus gets will still be limited.

We used to have a portable hammok lol we could put it in the stall, and " sleep" ( eons ago before technology lol) we would sleep in the stall..( our mares didnt care..because we were always sleeping in a stall or barn for one reason or another..ours were such pets, lol. Lounging in a hammock is so much easier than have to keep getting up.. but its 20 years or so ago lol
