Take an adventure through Donkey Kong Island in our ninth episode as we explore what made Donkey Kong Country a great game during the height of the platforming era.

What makes DKC stand out as a platformer I'd argue is how smooth and rhythmic its game mechanics are. From vine swinging, to animal buddies, to barrel cannons and minecarts, everything in the game propels you to move forward. And most objects and enemies are placed in such a way that promotes quick movement and speedy gameplay, making it a favorite among speedrunners.
Rhythm is definitely in there. The first draft of the script included a bit about maintaining momentum through a level to pass through gaps and enemies smoothly. Though it didn't make it into the analysis, it's certainly a notable feature of the gameplay.
What else is great about Donkey Kong Country? The beloved enemies and their leader, a Nintendo fan favorite named King K.Rool who's become as iconic as Bowser, Ganon/dorf, and Ridley.
I'd LOVE to see a video for Donkey Kong Country 2,3, F-Zero, and Super Mario Kart if it's not too much trouble.
One of my favorite games, and great job here.
For me DKC was the first platformer where the ground horizontal plane could shift up or down like a hill but still be in front of another ground area.
It's rarely flat from left to right and the angles are smooth, not just 30°angles up or down.
Millstone Mayhem is the peak level in the game, when you reach that area it's what DKC is remembered for

Remember getting this for xmas one year and my older sister being p*ssed that i wasn't playing it the next day... i had completed it. She didn't realise (and still wouldn't understand) that gaming in the 90s was about completing a game and then playing it again, and again, and again. It was a different time back then. There was no such thing as a backlog, it was a slow accumulation of games from bdays and xmas' that would be shuffled around for years to come.
DKC looked and felt next gen.
This is a fantastic analysis of DKC.
Look to hopefully one day seeing you do the sequels, including Returns.
This year is going to be the 30th anniversary of this game! Hopefully Nintendo has something special in store for DK!

I was a Super Nintendo owner that was sent a free VSH preview of the first Donkey Kong Country game, till this day I don’t know why or how I was sent that VCR tape but after watching it I was convinced it was a game that I was going to buy once it came out, so as a teenager I saved my allowance and bought this game once it came out and it became one of my favorite games of all time

Ha ha, thanks for the suggestion! We had never played DKC before this, but it was a great experience. We figured we should start with the first one, but there was so much to say about within a single sitting of play, I'm sure we'll get to the sequels in the future. If it's as much of an improvement as we've heard, it should be a fantastic game.

I always wondered what happened to Donkey/Cranky Kong Jr
I really enjoyed most of this video, but the end seemed nonsensical to me. “It looks like just another platformer on the Super Nintendo”, except it doesn’t look like any other platformer that came before it. The graphics were the gimmick. Yes, it had great gameplay behind it, which is what made the game a classic, but the graphics were what got the game the initial attention.
