We are truly privileged to have Swamiji in our midst. I have been reading about this for a lot of years. But no one can nail it like Swamiji does. I think that this is a seminal lecture that we need to come back and listen again and again. Douglas Hofstadter in his amazing book "Godel Escher and Bach - The Eternal Golden Braid" addresses some of these issues. He uses Zen Buddhism to talk about perception . By reading trestises like that we would be able to better appreciate Swamiji. He is truly a phenomenon. I used to live in NJ. Now i regret that my time there did not overlap with Swamiji. Thank you for asking. It's hard to say... Back in my childhood, my dad used to talk about the Self. My mother read Teilhard de Chardin to me. There were many books. But the "I am presence" was already there, in the cradle. It was me, staring into that soft darkness with that feeling: here I am again. And that "I" felt so formless and so real at a time. Then, in time, the books. Now, the gift of the internet and these great talks. And your attention. I feel blessed.

I am not sure if I am right, but the fact that we tend to give a term like 'consciousness ' or 'awareness' with associated etymological roots behind such names creates the objectification of this, and the confusion. FWIW, Brian Josephson, a Nobel laureate in Physics, suggests that scientists will eventually have to accept meditation as a valid scientific methodology, and perhaps a more promising approach than traditional scientific methodology, if they are to make any meaningful progress in their understanding of consciousness. As an Advaitin, I find Brian’s view refreshing.

I wonder if there is a parallel with the currently accepted realization in quantum mechanics that the Observer cannot be separated from the Observed phenomenon. I think this is also what Tagore and Einstein debated, although inconclusively.
Correct.According to Advaita Vedānta, the observed and the observer are both appearances within the one universal consciousness. It is the Ahaṃkāra (the ego, a function of mind) that generates the limited perspective of the observer and says, I am here looking out and everything else is not me.
The body erodes away, consciousness continues, great but then what is life like? I can't conceive of being consciousness without being a little of what I am now. How do you live as consciousness?

It's avastha trayi vicara. The classic exposition of this method is Mandukya Karika by Gaudapada, based on the Māṇḍūkya Upanishad, with the commentary by Shankaracharya. Sw Sarvapriananda has an excellent series of videos on TH-cam taking you step by step through it.
It's funny because when we realize these truths and experience it first hand, the expressions become very simple. Like a great gratitude or repetitive statement

I have been following many of these lectures and I really like the talks by Swami Ji. However, the more I am listening to him and many others as well - Rupert Spira, Deepak Chopra, etc. who say the same thing, I am wondering if they are trying to tell us in a gentle way, sure consciousness, God, the Universe, or Brahman or whatever you want to call it, is eternal, and exists, but you don't! If consciousness doesn't experience anything in anesthesia or deep sleep because there is no object to experience it, then basically it means when we no longer have the mind and body we melt into nothingness, but God will continue - according to this logic. In other words, is materialism right and are we just being given some solace through this philosophy so we don't suffer from existential angst.
Yes and no. The whole point of vedanta is that you are that which you call God. This mind body complex, you're not. There is no other entity known as Brahman. It is you, not a part of it, not some of it, but you are the whole Brahman experiencing the mind body complex right now. If you confuse yourself to the mind and the body, mortality will always hang above your head.
"in other words, is materialism right" Well, materialism says that consciousness is derived from matter, but your comment is implying that this is not the case. So if consciousness will continue to exist after the material body, the question would be: what are you? Are you the material body, or are you consciousness? The idea of Advaita is to discover that you are actually consciousness. It is a shift in perspective about what you really are. They claim that this actually aleviates all existential angst.
I think this is a brilliant perspective, one that has crossed my mind too. It would be great if we could ask this question directly to Swamiji. I believe he is one of the rare persons in this world who could consider the question objectively and actually care enough to give a genuine answer. But how do we request him to address this question?
