- Sometimes love happens when you least expect it. For me, it was this unbelievable 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard Reissue in VOS Iced Tea Burst, courtesy of Gibson Custom Shop - it's THAT good.
I always thought paying the extra money to recreate an old guitar was dumb, but I learned pretty quickly... maybe the old ways are sometimes the best.
I had every reason imaginable to not like this one, and it beat them all.

This vid is giving this R0 a legend status. But the moment you write a couple of songs (that become popular) instantly makes this guitar part of world History.
I bought one a year ago after listening to your video and for me, the Gibson R0 I got is worth every penny I invested in it. You will never get better sounds on cheaper Les Pauls than the ones you get on the R0 or R9. Just for the good vibrations I get from the sound of the notes every time I pick up the guitar, that is everyday, to me, this is priceless.
As soon as you open the case, you're hooked, there's no going back.
That’s a fact! Just got a new R9 last week. It shipped on a very cold 20 degrees F UPS truck and I had to wait a couple hrs till it thawed out to open the case. It was the most memorable experience I’ve ever had in 43yrs of playing. The guitar is a true work of art, an agonizingly gorgeous thing that truly looks like it was crafted in 1959 by the old Gibson builders. Gibson, I am convinced now, has cracked the code and using the currently available timbers is making Les Pauls in the Custom Shop just as good as they ever did. Not better, not worse, just the same.

You address everything that sets that guitar apart from USA Gibsons- the clarity of the sound , the quality of the wood and construction. Worth the money ? I think so- had the same experience. Someone leant me an R-0 for a year- after a few times playing it I realized that it was the best electric guitar I had ever picked up in 40 + years of playing. I sold off four guitars to buy it and have no regrets. The R-0 is the only Les Paul custom shop re-issue with the modern feeling neck profile and is often overlooked for the R-9. I think the R-0 is the best solid body Gibson has ever made.
The slim profile neck with everything that makes the 59 Reissue great was the perfect fit for me, I couldn't agree more
If you like fat necks and aren't that concerned with Flame tops are just plain prefer plain tops than the R8 is the best value of all the custom shop les Paul's.
They are over 1000 dollars cheaper than the R9s and R0s and except for the fatter neck and Plain top the R8 is identical to the R9 and R0. Your basically paying 1000 dollars extra for a flame top .. I love a nice flame top but I can take them or leave them as I really love a nice plain top.
Also there is alot of variance in the R8 neck profiles and if you try enough them you can find some with quite thin necks .
I have an R8 with a neck that is thicker than a 60s slim taper but thinner than a 59 profile. It's like a 1960 version 2 neck . The R0s used to come with 3 differmt profiles. V1 was the same as a 59 V2 was about halfway between a 59 and slim taper and V3 was the slim taper .
I just got an R9 that is the best guitar I've ever played, and I think its worth the money. Yolo. Imho the vintage style reissues capture what the old Les Pauls were like-- Telecasters on steroids
I used to think the same way as you. The Historic Collection is twice the price of a regular Les Paul, the Murphy Lab is three times the price, and the Heavy Aged one is even more expensive. One day, when I was browsing the internet late at night, I saw a Les Paul that I really liked. I thought about it for about an hour, then emailed the guitar shop and asked them to put it on hold. I couldn't sleep that day, but I went to a guitar shop that day, saw the Les Paul, tried it out, and decided to buy it. It's an expensive guitar, but my satisfaction was worth the price. I was able to get a dream guitar for the same price as the Real Burst I saw around 1980. Just like the latest Porsche is the best Porsche, it is the latest and best burst clone. Of course, I also know the goodness of classic things.
I know exactly what you are talking about. I just got my dream R8 in Dirty Lemon VOS and it's the finest guitar I've ever owned. It feels fantastic in my hands, looks amazing and the custom buckers are incredibly clear compared to my SG pickups that sound muffled. Congrats!

nothing beats the mojo of a Gibson Les Paul..I no longer own one but I regret selling mine.

Great review ! It’s definitely something worth investing in . My experience with Gibson , is always been good, the custom shops definitely got that edge . The reissues , are going to be way better then the old ones . And will continue to get better over time .
Man I think you did an amazing purchase, for me any musical instrument has to pull me in, you have the most beautiful Ice Tea burst Les Paul I have seen on all TH-cam. And like you said somewhere in the middle of the video, it grows on you. There is just something magical about a couple of the Finishes Gibson makes. It looks so absolutely beautiful, it is a piece of art ! Not to mention the incredible quality on the components. Bad Ass ! Congrats on your guitar!

Great honest video. We all hate Les Pauls until that 'one' finds us. I owned 3 previous; 2 standard, 1 classic, and then when I promised myself never again my current Traditional came along in 2018 and I rarely play anything else now. Truth is I played my good friends R9 but can honestly say I wouldn't trade mine. Mine feels like it was custom made exactly for me, so any doubters like I was, stay open minded, there is a LP out there for you! :)

I had this debate with my dad once. He brought up a good point about relative depreciation. His new to him BMW lost $18,000 in value in 4 years and 60,000 odd miles and that's with the dealer getting a cut. Trade in loss was closer to $22,000. That's three maybe four top shelf Gibson Historics right there. This depreciation money is just gone

That's about the nicest sounding guitar I've ever heard. I've been saving up for a nice Gibson LP. My birthday is in May, and I'll be buying myself one for a nice gift(maybe a bit early lol) I've really been leaning towards a 60s standard, but I'll also be looking at a Supreme this week, and a couple custom shops and Customs. Either way, I'm sure it'll put a smile on my face. Great video and congrats on that one!

Last year I bought the 60th anniversary 1960 V1 neck model. I borrowed the money to buy it as I could not believe the store I got it from still had one a few years after they came out. I took about 2 hours to make up my mind and to ask myself am I nuts to be spending this much money on one guitar. I went ahead and took out the loan and bought it. For a week or two after buying it I was still thinking “ohhh my god I’m nuts”.
Well it’s now just a little over a year since I bought it and whenever I have free time it’s never out of my hands.
Yes there is other brands who make instruments in the same price range and in their design are a more “finely set up guitar” but for me they have no passion for me.
I guess I’ve always wanted a vintage standard burst Les Paul and I know a lot of that is from looking at all the legends down the years who played them. I could keep going on and on about various reasons for and against.
I connected with my guitar in a way I have never with other guitars I have.
My Les Paul straight in my Amp = heaven. :-)

Got a 2021 LP 60’s model. The sound and tone is killer. Will never let it go.
I may still want to try one of those to compare to this one. I played a 50s standard at a guitar center years ago when I was deciding between that and my LP Classic, wasnt super impressed (ended up going with LP Classic)

@@KennyRavelo "Years ago" There lies the issue! The old Standards were not that great so i can see why you were unimpressed. The newer Standards since 2019 are are so much better now having said that the Re-issue you are playing in this
vid is in a league of it's own! I have a 2022 60's standard while it is a amazing Les paul and much much better
that those older Standards pre 2019, The newer 60's Standards are still not as good as the Custom shop Re-issues. Close but not as good overall. I would gig with the 60s Standard and keep my Re-issue safe at home!😁

The Murphy Lab Les Pauls and others are not just made to "look" old, they are made to "feel" like a vintage guitar. That's why when you pick one up and play it, you will instantly see "why" they are what they are!

I’ve got an R9 but it’s so nice to play I don’t take it out much so I use an epiphone LP Custom Pro which I also adore, but it gets regular abuse among other slightly more expensive guitars.

I bought an American made Paul Read Smith Custom thinking it would be the last guitar that I would ever need. it was a nice guitar but for some reason it just didn't fit with the way I played guitar. Maybe it was due to the fact I was an avid accoustic guitar player, I dunno but I was having intonation issues even after I had it "set up". The sound was great, however I was having to change the way I played to be satisfied. Didn't like or want that. At a band rehearsal I had an opportunity to borrow a Les Paul & that's when it happened. The feel & sound and over all satisfaction of the Les Paul completely changed my direction of what would be the last guitar I'd ever need. With that said, I went out the next day traded in my PRS an bought a 1960's Gibson Les Paul (Ice Tea Burst) & have had no regrets. The LP has been everything I've been wanting in a guitar and more! You are bringing up some great points about the guitar and they are so true and I agree everything you are saying so thank you for bringing it forward. Nice playing by the way! I love this guitar!! i have a '58 reissue and had the same thing was almost considering trading it for a prs woodlibrary recently.. but got it a fresh set up and its for sure never leaving lol its too good of a guitar

I totally get it and agree with everything you said. I don't think I could ever justify spending that kind of money on a guitar, even a Les Paul. I have a Honeyburst Tribute Les Paul and I love it. That said, I would LOVE one of these and I TOTALLY get why someone WOULD spend that kind of money. If you love guitars, this is THE guitar. Unfortunately, I'm just a mere mortal with mouths to feed hahaha. Cheers and enjoy that beauty.

I totally understand your video. I avoided Gibson for years because of price. I knew they were good, and I would eventually get my Les Paul one day. Well, I got the Sweetwater AAA Les Paul Standard Lemonburst and was totally, and completly converted. Everything you said, I agree with. I love my les paul, so beautiful, plays amazing, sounds better than any of my other guitars. I am in awe of it. And I cant believe its mine!!!
They were out of my price range for so long too. Never thought I'd ever own even a LP Standard, much less a Custom Shop reissue

The real magic is when you learn how the tone and vol pot interact ....... One would assume rolling the tone off to 5 or 6 would make it muddy, if you have your vol on 7-8 and do it. It will clean it up and dial out a bit of gain which in turn takes out the "woofiness" and man she will sing !! congrats I LOVE my r0

No Quarter, War Pigs, great songs! I wrote a paper on War Pigs in my history of rock n roll class at UCLA. Brilliantly worded song, as far as social commentary, plus killer melodies. I had an R8, but the neck was too thick. Definitely going with an R0 v3 next. Beautiful guitar, man.
That sounds like an awesome class, wish I took something like that in college. Yeah a lot of people like those bigger chunky 50s necks but I can't stand em. Only R0 necks will do it for me!
I just purchased a 2022 R0 myself, and I gotta say...it's EXACTLY what an LP should be in my opinion.
My 2018 R0 is without a doubt the best guitar I've ever played....and I've worked in guitar shops most of my life.
It is a phenomenally well-built instrument in every sense
I own the older brother lol. I had to check out the R8, R9 and R0 and played them all and went home with the R8. I chose the R8 because acoustics wise it rang better for whatever reason unplugged. When I played them all I preferred the neck on the R8 it for my hand perfectly. All of them are great guitars whether people believe in the price or not. I don’t think that matters when you want that it factor, my opinion. The unpotted PUps are amazing. And I’m proud to say it’s my number one and it does everything I want.
I love the R8s but unfortunately that neck profile just doesn't feel as nice as the slim R0 with my smaller hands lol
@@KennyRavelo this is why we have to try them out, especially if we are spending that cash lol. My hands are medium and skinny, but for some reason it fits my hand like a glove. My ‘61 Gibson SG is a slim neck and that works for me too. I don’t know why it is or how to explain it, When I love something I make it work. Then again I couldn’t play Fender Strats and it pissed me off for about 35 years lol. So I had one custom made for me. Finally I can play one besides my first guitar teacher’s. Since we are still friends he made me the Custom Fender and he likes mine better . We just have to play them, the more the better.

Very good video and overview. I’ve a 1997 LP classic with a 60s profile neck and got a 2021 1959 re-issue in ice tea burst. And the R-9 is far and away a better guitar. All the build details do make a difference
I did find it quite hard to believe how much better this R0 was than my LP Classic. On paper the Classic ticks off all the boxes I would need and more, so I didn't expect the Reissue to blow it out of the water
Unpotted pickups. Say it with me: unpotted pickups. They make all the difference in the world. You can get very close to that classic sound putting decent wiring and unpotted pickups in a less expensive guitar. All the little details matter, but unpotted pickups are a HUGE detail that is almost never mentioned. The details that set the custom shop guitars apart from standard USA models are valid but focusing on those details to push a custom shop model at 2 or 3 times the cost of a standard without mentioning whether the pickups are potted or unpotted is doing a disservice. I'm glad you mentioned that right at the beginning!
Never played pickups this good before. Alnico III in a humbucker configuration is just something i never bothered with. biggest mistake ever
@@KennyRavelo They're really quite something. The magnets usually dictate how much bite you get (A2 is smoother and more mellow compared to A5 which will have more bite and treble) but the output is generally determined by the windings. The vintage ones were usually wound slightly and sometimes drastically unevenly between the coils, giving them lots of clarity, but the secret sauce was in the fact they were unpotted. No wax allows the windings to pick up the inherent resonance in the guitar itself. Completely saturate them with wax and they won't pick that up nearly as much, making the wood, what kind of glue used, etc less significant. Some guitars are greater than the sum of their parts... but it was nice to hear someone mention the pickups. You got a beauty for sure!
Fuck, what a perfect description. I am a collector...own 7 les Paul's with just one custom shop. Yes, that guitar blows away my 2019 LP STANDARD . It's a 2017 Slash Anaconda with the Alnico pro's . Play's perfect, to the point i don't want to put it down.I have a bit of everything including 4 PRS'S., you're RO sounds better than any of those high end guitar's. Glad i stumbled upon this...i now have my sights set on your guitar. That was awesome!

Yes that's one of the nicest looking 60s reissue I've seen, yes I agree PRS ect may be engineered well but they are lifeless, soleless, have no character, now any R8, R9, R0, even standard factory LPs are full of it, pure individuals.

I played an R0 with a nice wide flame and I had to put it down before I gave them all my money😂 they are built so well. But not that far off from Gibson USA tho
I played every les paul on the wall and bought the 60s Standard because it was by far my fav. The collectors and cork sniffers rave about the 50's style models, but the 60s felt far better to me. I also fell in love instantly. My only criticism is that the nut was hot garbage... strings popped when trying to tune, etc. Had that and the bridge replaced, and now it's an amazing guitar.

Imo the pickups on the 60s are clearer than the burstbuckers in the 50s standard
On the R0's Its the proper neck angle to the body that allows a low action setup with the bridge and tailpiece low on the body. I have a pet peave with LP's that have the bridges and the tail pieces in the stratosphere.

I have traveled down to Gibson Garage from Springfield,IL 3 times in the last 4 months to buy a R6 Goldtop, R9 and a R8 …..yes they are expensive and I have had USA models in recent years but NOTHING beats a CUSTOM REISSUE ! Call me a foolish older man (53) but I love the history and how they were built in Kalamazoo during the late 50’s , there is a certain feel or a “MOJO” about these Customs that I’ll never go back to a regular LES PAUL , I’m spoiled I guess 🤷🏼♂️🤘🏼

I was never a fan of purpose built ware but many like it. As this is a reissue i don't see much in the ware Dept. that would make that much of a difference. Looks & sounds great & any top end guitar is gonna cost no matter what kind it is. It sounds like you picked a winner, I have two LPs one a Burgundy finish 79 Custom & my first LP a Black 1972 LP Custom i got from my teacher in 73. Both are stock & i wouldn't trade or sell either for a reissue . We can't always own 50s & 60s guitars without busting the bank & my 72 set me back 500 bucks & that was a lot for a kid of 17. So in the end i personally think you did just fine & you seem quite happy with the instrument & that's a big plus in anyone's book. I would share a post of mine which is just an audio clip from 87 & a song i wrote during my high school days. Kenny if you have the time please feel free to give a listen & the guitar is the only photo i put on the clip but it's my 72 & one hell of a workhorse through all these years. I think you play well & this should be right up your alley . Feel free to leave a comment if you wish but leave it on my post if you would be so kind. One thing i will say is it's not a Black Beauty but i wish it was. Great instrument &i have no regrets as it's never let me down. Usually when I plop down $6000 plus on an instrument, I spend some time researching or if possible playing one ahead of time. Going in without researching and having an attitude like I don’t understand the point of this, and why this makes a difference or not over a lesser priced guitar and then just taking the plunge is kind of silly but to each their own. Also, If you aren’t much of player then a Custom Shop Les Paul probably isn’t going to make much difference to you than a $50 Squier.

Low output pickups usually has more clarity. That is one thing why i like PAF pickups.

Gibson Custom Shop are making some incredible Les Paul's. I used to own a Jimmy Page Signature Les Paul that I regretted selling. Iv'e owned other Les Paul's in the past and played many. I recently looked at an R9 and I really liked it a lot, simular neck profile to The Page Les Paul I used to own. I also tried the R0 and then the R8. I went with the R8 it was everything I wanted. It's funny because It's the thickest neck out of the bunch. That's why we have to play them, if it feels right and talks to you. Do you need to spend $5500 or more on a great guitar? Only if it talks to you and the feel is right. Iv'e sold some guitars of mine because the R8 is that amazing. If a guitar is that great, you try to make whatever it takes to get it done. I couldn't agree with you more, the reissues are amazing.
I love the way a lot of the 50s guitars look but tragically for me the neck profile just doesn't agree with me. But yes I agree, I have sold 2 of my old USA LPs just to make this one viable. Worthwhile upgrade tho IMO

I too was skeptical about Gibson Custom Shop reissues being worth the price, having played and been pleased with standard production Gibson models for years. I too was made to understand. Now I own an R9 and I'm wondering why I waited so long (aside from the cost).
Its like buying a Ferarri....yeah you can drive a corolla for 1/100th the price...But fuck that corolla....FERRARI BABY!!!!...I have 5 of these now....I was an EMG 81/85 user since the 80s...Then I had Dean custom wind my own signature pickups @21.5k!!!...Theyre great....but these custom buckers sound incredible...I'm hooked on them now...

These custombuckers are the real deal, I thought they were just all hype and over-exaggerated like a lot of these things are
A few humble comments. First, I have two '19 60th Anniv. Standards and they are beyond great. Second, you can indeed hear flame. Flamed wood usually comes from the first cut (log) at the bottom of the tree. The tremendous weight of the tree above and the twisting and turning of the tree in the wind makes that wood dense and very stiff. Heavily flamed wood tends to ring more than plain grained wood cut from higher parts of the log. It might be subtle but it is there. Last, the hardware on your guitar is nickel plated, not chrome. Your guitar is a real beauty and you play it very well indeeed.

The price tag on these gibson custom shop guitars is what people often forget. your not paying 250,000k for the original 1960. Yet your getting a chance to own and play one as if you actually were in the 1960 yourself. But i get everyone wants the best cheapest guitar they can find. I have 20 plus guitars myself. No matter what you say no Epiphone will be the same as a custom shop Gibson .because Gibson wont have them make epiphones or normal gibsons with the same construction and paint. Close but not exact.
That's right, I forgot to even mention they're a bargain compared to a real '59 lol
2019 50's Standard owner here Got it in early 2021 and was barely used but gone over by the shop Seemed to be a candidate for a wrap over cause a little stiff After going back and forth with regular or wrap over it has loosened up very nicely on the reg.wrap w studs all the way down It has broken in a lot better than a new CS Strat has Loving this new Gibson Comparable to a 97 Historic R9LP I used to own Both 8.5 lbs Maybe a pup swap but no rush

BS I have an r9 that I put ellis lrp pickups, throback 50s harness and pigtail bridge and tailstop and I'm still thinking about the next guitar but I really like this one.

I I wonder how you would like a Les Paul Standard with the pick ups switched to Seymour Duncan Antiquities or Seth Lovers. They replicate the the P.A.F. sound and are unpotted. I think the main difference between the two is the magnets in the Antiquities are degaussed to replicate aging, and the Seth Lovers are closer to what a P.A.F. was like new.
I would love to try em! Whenever I did pickup swaps in the past I would normally just go from passive to active, so I've never dropped Seyour Duncans into anything. Not that I would ever replace THESE pickups with anything, but I definitely want to try experimenting more with those
