      As someone with chronic illness though, you'd be disturbed to realise how little medicine knows about some aspects of the body, especially neurology. Yes, doctors will have heard what science has found so far, but people with conditions experience having it all day everyday, while some doctors try to tell them that they can't have that symptom or that it can't be THAT bad. There's a balance, you need a good working relationship with your doctor
      Edit: also I almost died of pneumonia as a toddler when a GP dismissed my mother's concerns about how ill I was. Some GPs are aholes.

    The bit about medication is something i think a lot of people have experienced differently because it is very personal. I used to be on a pretty mental cocktail of antidepressants and antipsychotics. These helped greatly but came with their own strange side effects, ranging from being a little bit tired all the way up to causing night terrors. In my case and i think this should be taken in to account for lots of people, as i stabilized and worked through my depression i came off the medication. It was hard but worth it, i still need the antipsychotics but i decided to stop taking them a year ago because they shifted hallucinations into night terrors. I thought hey would i rather wake up in a rage panic attack or learn to ignore strange silhouettes as i go about my day. Medication can be an important tool but as lewis said it can have wider impacts on the brain, if you need it take it. I think as a society we need to work out how to use brain altering medication as a fine tool rather than a "sledge hammer".
    That's just my opinion and experiences , everyone's different feel free to disagree.

    • @colossaldonut5190
      @colossaldonut5190 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That sledgehammer analogy really hit home for me (no pun intended) and well, at some point I got sick of going to the doctor to change my flavour of the week medication and stuck with what doesn't keep me from going nuclear on a regular indoors basis (I still get very anxious in most social situations but since well, I don't usually go in them I just didn't worry myself) and it's been working alright, I'm just worried for when I'll need to start being social again and attend things like classes and I need to find some new flavour of the week medication to give myself and "try for a few weeks and see how it works out".
      The sooner I can just have a robot brain that doesn't carry anxiety the better.

    Lewis, you can detect what the atmosphere consists of by analysing light; water vapor, carbon dioxide and oxygen absorb certain wavelengths of light quite uniquely, so dips of intensity in the light spectrum reflected off the planet at those exact frequencies (after adjusting for red-shift) is evidence that the atmosphere (and thereby also the surface as the most lightweight molecules move back and fourth between solid and gas, f.ex. water, carbons, nitrogens etc.)

    I watched a show on how they identify these planets. And when they say "like earth" it means they can measure the size of the planet, the distance from its sun and what type of atmosphere it has (ex. oxygen rich) Most of these things they find out when they watch that solar systems sun for a long time and if smthg passes in front of it they can measure the distances and position relative to the sun. But the atmosphere is measured by looking at the tiny halo the planet has and what collor it is. Oxygen has its own collor when having the sun at its background. No expert, just look this up yourselfs.

      Star trek calls them m class planets.

    • @NilMortifey
      @NilMortifey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a bit more complicated than that... in the sense that it isn't the colour of the atmosphere but the (radio?) frequencies the atoms give off when energy goes through them, in exoplanets the energy source is the local star. So they use a device to measure the frequencies of light coming from stars, and they look for certain bandwidths that indicate the molecules they're looking for - usually large amounts of oxygen, carbon, methane and some other odds and ends - stuff that wouldn't ordinarily be thrown off by the star and stuff that would indicate a solid world with some sort of atmosphere. These frequencies can sometimes be mixed together so a lot of the time it's "best guess" in deciphering the results they get back, and a lot of the time it's several groups looking at these spectrographs and each is trying to be the first to publish their results.

      There are also several other gases with similar properties to oxygen or nitrogen or any of the other gases needed to create an earth like environment. Similar in the sense these telescopes are looking at objects hundreds of light years away, what that means is they aren't very precise data can get confused or interpreted improperly, these telescopes are very powerful yes and very advanced but any information we get from them are just very educated guesses and we cant know for certain until we either get bigger telescopes or can go to those planets ourselves. Which was Lewis's point in the video that these are mostly just guesses. You could argue "oh isn't everything in science a big educated guess" and my reply would be "no your being pedantic".

You should come out and visit Crendor, and have him take you there! He's talked about going there on one of the Cox N Crendor in the morning episodes. I've been there many times, I think you'd have a fine time. They have built an actual fantasy village there year round, and during the faire you can watch jousting, tons of performers, falconry, usually at least one working blacksmith making swords and whatnot, and TONS AND TONS of cosplaying faire goers in wildly varying levels of realism and creativity. As someone who works with doctors, they do 'google' symptoms and treatments very often, but on much more tailored software designed for doctors. There are too many diseases and things that can go wrong with the body for any doctor to memorise, what they know are more broader concepts on how the body works and how certain types of diseases and illnesses operate so when they encounter something they're not familiar with, they'll research to make sure they're offering correct advice and apply the broader knowledge of their training and experience to apply it in a more appropriate way than you would be able to yourself

    The fact that Lewis, someone with a chemistry degree, refuses to believe or figure out that the composition of exoplanet atmospheres can (and HAS) been describes infuriates me. As he will/should know about spectroscopy and EM spectra, these can be used to find the composition of elements, molecules and compounds of a gas, (i.e. an ATMOSPHERE) even on far away and small exoplanets.
    Unfortunately I doubt he will see this but my god, as he said himself, "Clearly my [Lewis'] knowledge about the solar system is out of date".

    Lewis is right though. We cant actually see exo-planets, we can only make out the dimming of the stars light which gives us a rough estimate of the planets size, distance from the star and maybe a very small amount of information on its atmosphere. Just because a planet is roughly earth sized and in the habitable zone does NOT mean its earth like because Venus is also in the habitable zone and only slightly smaller than earth and obviously it isn't habitable. Mars is also in the habitable zone and isn't habitable either. Both Venus and mars use to be habitable but back when they were habitable the earth wasn't . The point is its a guessing game , very very very educated guesses but the truth is more than half or potentially all of these "habitable worlds" aren't actually habitable at all because if there were we'd have an answer for the fermi - paradox a long time ago. A lot of these are just exaggerated information that "technically" isn't wrong because it increases engagement and gets clicks and there's nothing nefarious or wrong about that either.

  • @ririnatheghost2154
    @ririnatheghost2154 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Coming from a medical student, yes googling medication and other such likely diseases or whatnot you are concerned about is good as a patient. They recommend us to do that ourselves if we have something wrong and get a good grasp before we go in. But a lot of doctors have a god complex since they've gone to school for a long time and don't even consider your options because most of the time it's probably proven to be wrong. (Coming from their perspective.) But also again they are more educated than a website and can give you more personalized medication. Yes, you know your body but if you have a gp or family doctor then they should also have a very good grasp as to how your body works. Now if it is like urgent care or er then these suggestions are always good to offer even if the doctor is a prick. (also make sure they operate on the right limb and not the opposite one)

    The Star Trek transporter system has never made a whole lot of sense and has long been recognised as having huge lore and plot holes. The one sci-fi show that I can think of which handles the concept in a sensible and believable way is Stargate SG-1, where the teleporter simply swaps two areas of spacetime and everything they contain.

    PFlax, I just finished a book you might find interesting. Have a gander at Notes From An Apocalypse by Mark O'Connell. One chapter is about the people obsessed with Mars colonization, and he finds that they tend not to be forward thinking people, but rather obsessed with the days of colonialism. The rest is good too, right up your alley. X

    I wish they do more star wars stuff that strays away from Jedis - Rogue One, Solo, Mandolorian.
    There's so much good stuff to explore in that universe than rehashing the same jedi/sith storylines

    • @AN-ii5li
      @AN-ii5li 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think it's that, so much as limiting how strong they are as characters. The prequels suck not because they have that story behind it all but because the hero just handles all the problems effortlessly- there's no tension. With rogue one, though, the characters were more grounded and engaging. Even the force wielding character was excellent - but he was limited by his eyesight, as well as not having a lightsbaber. If a star wars story had a young Jedi bad at fighting, or prone to rash and poor decisions (what Rey should have been at the beginning) it would be engaging. There are lots of ways to do this with both the hero and villain's.

    • @theframe100
      @theframe100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AN-ii5li Yea I think Rey could have been an excellent character if she had been less... Excellent.
      Her personality also strikes me as a bit unappealing for a main character. Maybe they focused too much on the side characters (which didnt really pay off).

    • @AN-ii5li
      @AN-ii5li 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theframe100 I don't think it's that, remember in the original trilogy it wasn't just on great character. The biggest issue was the change in directors, it completely messed up character development. Rey went from being special to not having difficulty in the last Jedi, she helped kylo murder snoke who's meant to be extremely powerful as well as his bodyguards. So we already don't care about her - even is she's fighting the emperor we know she's gonna be strong enough so who car s? Po goes from being this legendary fighter to his entire plot being that he's too.... Undermining? Pink haired women shows him how it's done apparently by getting almost all the rebels killed. So his character has nothing for a whole films which is why we don't really care in TROS. Finally, Finn was a decent character but everyone around him made his story boring. They killed off Phasma, and Rose sucked the soul out of every scene. The ending to TLJ would have been redeemed a bit if he had sacrificed himself, but with Rose saving him, not only impossible given how fast he was going, just reminds you it's a Disney film and it's protagonists are ultimately in no danger. His character is totally bland in the final film too.
      The one good character in the whole trilogy, Kylo, was engaging because there was actually conflict in his character. Being an edgy revisionist sith is not super creative but it's something! I was actually a little sad when he died (didn't care about anything else in the film) , which was a little stupid given that they could just heal each other. My point, though, is that an engaging character can come from a anywhere, it depends on the writers and directors - in the new films it was just Kylo Ren after the force awakens. He was a sith and force wielder, a while those aren't what make his character good they do add a level that would be missing if they weren't there.
