Someone: I went shopping and bought a sandwich
Lewis: That reminds me of a high-concept, post apocalyptic indie sci-fi series by the author, he actually wrote numerous different series on, about kind of the space romp story type deal, but he's called Brilfrid Tumsly and the story's kind of about like, how, it's very reminiscent of our every day lives you know, how you're always on the edge of this kind of immense panic and what's amazing is that, when I heard about this book someone said it's so true to life which it is and honestly going in I doubted it but it really gripped my by the end because he's so clearly got his focus set on this niche of the genre that is simultaneously very realistic, unlike the modern day kind of tripe you find in you, I dunnno, like WHSmiths or something. Is WHSmiths still a thing I dunno, we're in lockdown.

    Pyrion: why?
Sips: you know, it's just how I feel I guess
Lewis: Listen, listen, listen... we are on the precipice of a terrifying area of discussion, which we know nothing about and that's why we fear the unknown and why Sips's reaction is very very natural.
    Pyrion: *sighs*

It's scary because banks can choose whether or not to serve you. So if all your money is stored digitally in a bank, then you are completely at the mercy of the bank- and even if it's regulated you'd still be completely at the mercy of the government. Being entirely reliant on a system known for failing and needing to be bailed out should be scary.

@@tophatproductions3031 To be honest, the reason I (and perhaps Lewis too) feel that way is because we read them when they first came out, which was in the late 90's, and the writing did slowly get a bit more mature until the final book which was released 20 years later.
If we went back and re-read the first couple of books our opinions may change... But I dont want to spoil the magic (ha)
Lewis would have been 13/14 when the first book came out. Pyrion would have been 21/22. I think that is the critical difference!

In Hong Kong children are usually born with an Anglicised middle name---it has been this way for a long time. It isn't so that we can communicate with them better. It is instead to do with the complex and interesting history the UK has with Hong Kong. They're also born with a British National Overseas passport, which doesn't afford the holder many rights but is a necessity commanded by Hong Kong Act 1985. We are now hoping (since 2020) to allow Hong Kongese people to have limited leave to remain (5 years) to work and study in the UK. Holders can then apply for settled status. This is in retaliation to China's authoritarian stamp-down on Hong Kong and their infringement of the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984. They actually choose their name from a list and parents spend a lot of time deliberating over the meaning of Anglicised names in order to find one that they think will suit their child.
The UK and Hong Kong have a long and interesting history. As a Brit, I hope that the UK can continue to support Hong Kong. They're great people.

  • @Fractite
    @Fractite 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I think what makes young adult novels the way they are is that authors use themes that can be 'relatable' to the 12-18 y.o. age group (even though quite a few readers of YA novels are older.)
The Divergent series (the epitome of a promising book gone horribly wrong) basically used friendship, comradery, first love and identity (i.e. the group you were in) throughout the series, themes that the target audience could relate to.
Edit: on the subject of names, I think it's a thing popular in former British colonial areas in Africa and Asia. My parents have typically Nigerian names, but adopted Christian English names when they came to the UK to "make assimilation easier" and to "stop problems with name misspellings etc with banking and other legal crap".

This led to me researching negative interest, its a real thing meant to be an incentive for loaning during a deflationary period ( When people or banks want to hold money rather than spend it or loan it) to prevent such behavior because it is bad for economic growth. So in theory it would be better during these periods to put your money into something like Gold.

Not just that. Think about the complete lack of privacy that Sips already mentioned. The government will be able to trace pretty much anything you do. Combine this with the rising promotion of having RFID-Chips implanted in people "for an easier and more comfortable life". Add to this the rising interest in western governments for the chinese way: a "scoring" system where people get awarded points if they behave in a government-approved way. People who digress and have unpopular opinions - they're not able to receive certain benefits, can't use certain services anymore etc. The lure of the "more comfortable" way of paying without cash is pushing humanity in a very dangerous position. And events like the totally overexaggerated Corona-hype (with artificially inflated numbers of infected, dead, etc.) are used to further the "transparent citizen"-agenda. Please keep this in mind. And honestly: if you actually regard using notes and coins as a "hassle" compared to electronic payments, you're a spoiled tool anway.

Your card theories all hinge on 2 big assumptions:
1 that there is electricity to run the devices that read your phone/card’s orders and are able to communicate via an electronic connection.
2 that the finance institutions also have power and/or internet connectivity as well.
So how do you pay for goods during a large blackout??? Or loss on internet???

I appreciate them talking about the cultural names. As an Asian-American, I also find it dumb that we have to "conform" to the American culture and create a separate "American/English" name, just so it would be easier for them to pronounce, and even get less prejudice in life. Again, It's just how the world works at the moment, English is the main language of the whole world, with the power, status, and everything. Everyone outside is expected to conform to it. Those already inside expect it to be done, because GOD FORBID it makes them sound like an idiot when they can't pronounce our given name, instead of seeing it as, oh let's try and learn a different culture.

  • @thatguy6919

The young protagonist definition is definitely not perfect because the first book in the Dune series features a teen protagonist with a lot to prove, and that book series is a very adult and multilayered commentary on society, religion, government, etc. I think the only way to really determine whether something is a "young adult novel" is who its meant for, and that is entirely subjective. The Twilight books are very obviously meant for young teens. The early harry potter books are clearly meant for children. However adults can enjoy the Harry Potter books despite the early books being written for children, and adults who enjoy the Twilight novels are sub sentient scum, see its subjective.

On the subject of going out to restaurants and eating out right now - if it takes all of these precautions for you to go out and eat, should you really be doing it? I am all for supporting restaurants and eateries etc right now but it is way easier to use a lot of the takeaway services that these places offer rather than eating in. I know people are eager to get back to some kind of normality but if it takes all of this work to allow you to eat at a table for an hour then maybe we need to rethink what we're doing.

I named my daughter Aeris after the FF7 character (I do not like how Aerith flows and prefer the og transliteration)... so now she has to explain to people that she's named after a character in some old video game her parents liked. With the remake now, maybe some people her age might be familiar with the character... but of course that used Aerith so unless they also know the original NA release it just makes it seem like her parent's can't spell in addition to being quite lame for naming her after a game character.

I find it pretty funny that pyrion refuses to accept that Harry potter books mature as they go along and then goes on to state red riding books mature as they go along... I think the fact he thinks having kids in a story equates to it being a kids book highlights how limited his world view is. If you take the name of the wind, a book predominantly featuring the stories of a child who becomes a teenager would you say it's for kids? I don't want to spoil anything but judging by the complex writing, poetry, and themes in the book it definitely isn't. Would you say the game of thrones chapters written from the perspective of a child are for children? The world surrounding the child is what decides the themes not the child themselves it is pretty astonishing a grown man fails to realise that. The Diary of Anne Frank should be put in the kids section, it was after all a book written by a kid about a kid.
