  • The Floatback Technique in EMDR Therapy can be used to access related past memories outside conscious awareness. It can even access these where direct questioning has failed to connect. Join Dr Michael Paterson OBE, EMDR Europe Accredited Senior Trainer, as he explains how and when to use this valuable technique.

Thank you for another excellent video, Dr Peterson. Would you ever use the floatback technique during the processing phase if a client is blocked?

During Phase 4 Desensitization when the client is blocked in their reprocessing, I would initially change the direction or speed of the eye movements. Changing the modality is also an option, as is going back to target or focusing on a different aspect of the memory. When the SUD doesn't go down to 0, despite asking the client, "Where do you feel it in your body?", and ading in BLS, I would think of a blocking belief or feeder memory. A feeder memory is a distinct possibility if your target memory is from adolescence or adulthood. To explore this I would firstly use an Affect Scan. It's similar to the Floatback but you only use the emotion and sensation with the current memory (feeling state) and "scan back to an earlier time you felt something similar". Note what comes up and then scan back further again. The Affect Scan leaves out the Negative Cognition which may well have processed by this point. Another video about letting reprocessing flow is at th-cam.com/video/fkzgZinsGN0/w-d-xo.html
