This story touched me. It just goes to show that all we need is God through Jesus Christ and he is exactly right that’s why we should thank God for everything that we have, and have not thank you God for giving me this story as word of encouragement through. One of the bands that I have always loved since I was a kid and still do at the age of 53 and may you have mercy upon me in Jesus name I pray God bless Dan Peak, and I pray, someday that I will be in your presence God in Jesus name Amen 🙏

A few years after Dan left America, I started asking other people I knew who liked America....."Have you heard where Dan Peek went since he left America?" Nobody knew. I asked so many people through the years where he may have gone as far as new bands he must have gotten involved with. Couldn't imagine he quit music. After 30 years of wondering what happened to him , I find out that Dan was hanging out with none other than the Lord and making music for Him almost since he left America. HAVE TO smile with a big HALLELUJAH ! every time I think about where he had been all those years.

I find it odd that Dan Peeks and all those who followed him after he left 'America' seem to fail to acknowledge, it clearly wasn't a necessity to leave (break apart) his musical friends of America to find 'Jesus' or 'The Father'. HE chose to distance himself from those who made him what he was. Granted, he wanted to get away from the drugs, n hype of the 'rock world' of the 70's but again, he could've been "born again" as they said back then, just doing things right, n that really didn't require leaving his musical career .....His buddies could've replaced him when he left, but they didn't do that, cause without him it wasn't 'America' He abandoned them, the same way he claimed he abandoned Jesus........that doesn't make any sense to me, not at all.

Just saw America Saturday night, their last performance of their 50th Anniversary Tour. That prompted me to research what happened to their other original partner, Dan Peek. And oh how I have been blessed on what I found about this special man’s story. May God continue to bless you, Dan, in Heaven. Thank you for leaving behind your beautiful and refreshing story of true conversion!

God bless his family.

Not only could he sing, write, & play BEAUTIFUL music; he made handmade Blue Bird Boxes with Singles for the Roof, and I'm Still a proud owner of Two; shared one with my Pop too. He's 81 now & still enjoys watching every year a new Blue Bird Family come into live in his back yard.

The first album I bought as a kid was America's Homecoming back in 1973. I was 13. Today (2018) I pulled it up on Spotify and could remember almost all of the words to the album. I looked here on TH-cam and just learned of Dan's passing. This could have been a sad story like when I learned of Chris Whitley's passing in 2005, but it's not. The difference is the hope we have through Jesus Christ.
John 11:25 I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me shall live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

I'm an atheist that beleves that Dan saved his life by turning to his spiritual belief. If he found the strength and peace of mind through his beliefs, then more power to him. He made reference to god in the first verse of Everyone I Meet Is From California, the B side to A Horse With No Name, so his belief was there already. A great musician who died from a rare virus that attacks the heart. Dan had a very big heart.

The pop music world is a crusher... it sucks the life out of anyone who gets into the superstar business... that is record labels want their money as fast as possible, and the pressures of the bizz must be just hellaceous.

Whatever his beliefs were and the road he decided to tread upon, Dan Peek to me will always be 'the sweet soul of America', perfectly in tune with 'brave and daring' Dewey and 'Mr. Melody and Good Looks' Gerry.
    A perfect threesome.
So perfect you might really start thinking God had decided to put them together, picking each one up from US Air Force bases around the globe and planting them in Swingin' London, the right place at the right time.
An Anglo-American band, yes, you can hear it in their compositions: guys who were growing up in the UK, being used to rainy days and Beatlemania, yet always having a wee chat with those 'everyone' they met who really 'were from California'. Apart from their own families, their American dads and English mums, of course.
You'll always have 'more British' America tunes and 'more American' America tunes, sometimes you'd have them both in the same song. A perfect blend.
They made it quick to number one just in time before London wasn't swingin' anymore and California was colonised by Eagles... they had to try and survive through the seventies, it was tough, squeezed as they were amidst the many Zeppelins, Floyds, Genesis, Yes, then the punk and disco craze... until a certain point when everything seemed destined to fail (that's to me, and its yielding and unimaginative title says it all), Dan had parted company, even George Martin couldn't work it out any longer: he'd already 'worked that out' with The Beatles 14 years before, he couldn't provide with a second chance.
Suddenly, two years after 'Alibi' (another self-explanatory title) had been released, AOR had become the new fashion and someone in Italy thought 'Survival' was such a good song... again, titles seem to explain any step America took... it was top of the charts once again, but you needed something more to make it beyond the 'Festival di Sanremo'...
Out of the blue came RUSS BALLARD, whom we America fans should always say 'thank you' until our very last days: he could do magic, he'd already proved it, so he did it again. That's exactly when I really thought >, to listen to and enjoy forever.
    Thanks, mate.

Thank you. I grew up in England, my Dad was in the service, USAF. I was 12 when Horse came out. We American kids loved this band because they were military brats like us... Homecoming and Hat Trick were love letters to us kids who missed the States... I loved this band all my life, followed Dan after he left America. In my opinion, they were never the same band after Peek... they were still very good, but Dan brought that unexplainable element that made their music so special.
I'm 64 now, and I still come back to this music... it's still relevant and it still soothes my soul. Cheers, mate! God bless you.

@@billreid818 I'm a Scot and have been loving the band ever since I was 9, that was 1982, 'You Can Do Magic' was all the rage.
It's so good to hear from someone who's been there 'among the lads' in Ruislip. I'd love to know the way you lived, who you'd meet, whether you were also open to British acquaintances or not, I'd even love to know which route the bus you got on to get to school actually took!
It would reveal to me a lot about Gerry, Dewey and Dan's lives behind their songs.
Was it really something like 'the purple ghost of England in winter time'? Did you go venturing out in London and surroundings like Gerry, Dewey and Dan once said?
There's so many things I'd love to get to know, man...
I'm half Italian but I grew up as a Scot, a Brit and a Protestant, it never happened to me to grow homesick for Italy though I used to go there for my summer holidays. Why did you grow so homesick for the US never having been there (or partly)? Is it all about yer parents's influence? I mean, Gerry and Dewey both had English mothers, this is why I can't get why they were so homesick for the US, they should've developed some sort of dual belonging, am I so wrong?
Anyway, Dan's songs were the most introspective on the whole. Gerry was classical and Beatle-ish, Dewey was edgy and daring, Dan was reflective.

@220773 p.s. yes, we ventured all over Brackley and visited London many times. Even alone as young teens we were perfectly safe wherever we went on the trains or the busses.

@220773 Can you feel it moving inside of you, can you let it go? The Purple Ghost of England in wintertime, and who I used to know?
The answer is yes, I can close my eyes and I'm in England in my dreams, among my friends of my youth... and no, it's impossible to let go. It's with me till I die. I am haunted, but I wouldn't have it any other way...

I've always felt a bind with Dan Peek. I don't know just why. I don't know if I felt Dan was treated as an outsider in America, or maybe it was just his spirit. I don't even know if I realized most of the time that Dan had left to dedicate himself to Christ and to contribute to Christian music. It was only about four years ago when I reconnected with Dan via his music, the more secular music that he did: Bodden, Town, Guitar Man 1 & 2 and his Christmas cd. I also read Dan's book about America. All I am saying is whether I like it or agree with it Dan and I have both had that calling to be Christians. I'm not much of a Christian at all but I try not to follow the world. I think I still have a heart for God. Anyway, the point is that I think I understand how Dan must have felt when God called him. Life can be so empty if you decide there is no God, no spirit of God.

Much better story than of the many great musicians that let drugs or booze take their life away.

Does anyone know the name of the song he is singing at the very end of this video?
By the way, America was much better with Dan than without him. Those years in the 70's were the best. Thank you so much Dan for your music and your inspiration.

Every segment that frames America's success uses the same few songs- Here the guy is introducing Dan with first 4 songs he didn't write or sing lead on. Those were Dewey and Gerry songs. Even as host begins speaking to Dan and Dan is talking, it's Dewey's song "Tin Man" being played. Jesus, what is wrong with these people. - Dan's best America songs were "Today's the Day", "Lonely People", "Woman Tonight"- why not play those if you purport to know anything about Dan...?
But preach brother, and so on....

felpin - I believe I saw the same video. Even more interesting is that story supposedly about Dan’s death kept playing a images of a Dan-less “America” video recording of Dewey and Gerry singing “Ventura Highway” in a live performance without Dan (presumably a few years after Dan left the group). This recording on this TH-cam site does show a nice solo performance by Dan of “Lonely People”.

That is cool he found Jesus, no problem with that; the material of America so great. He doesn't at least here say anything negative about his band mates, I wonder how he was perceived or whatever when he left the band.

Sheri Graham Dave Hope from the 1970's band Kansas became one after he almost died of 40,000 dollars of crack Co-cane. Aswell as Kerry Livgren. who was also saved but never did drugs. But the rest? We don't know.
