When I was stationed in the Air force on the remote Island of Shemya out near the end of the Aleutian Islands, we would turn out the lights in our dorm room and put on Journey to the Center of the Earth. It helped us survive a year’s assignment on this lonely, cold, windy rock in the middle of a the freezing Bering sea. It would take us to a whole different world inside the earth!
If correct spelling and grammar was a requirement on Shemya, he woodn't have being ther wering an aire force uniform. What have you done for our country. Scilly count!
I was extremely fortunate to have seen this musical Genius on his first tour as he performed in The Arie Crown Theatre in McCormick Place , Chicago ! I still relish the thought of having the honor of a Rick Wakeman performance ...... Appears he does not age or have any decline in his age ! Nothing like this could ever be played live on those early synths. They not only played one note at a time (monophonic not polyphonic) but could only be programmed to make one sound, and needed time-consuming rewiring with patch cords before another sound could be produced. People like Wakeman and Keith Emerson were not just musical virtuosos, they were part engineer too!

I loved this album when it first came out. I in high school and there weren't a lot of kids into this at my school because it couldn't be played on the radio. But I memorized the narration, the lyrics, the entire story. It was and remains one of the most magnificent pieces of music I have ever heard.
I was lucky, here in Australia there was ONE radio station that played the entire album. It was basically an album station and would announce that the record was going to be played for us to get ready to press record on our tape players. Haha imagine that today.
I saw him decades ago in Toronto for the Six Wives of Henry VIII tour. He drank beer, told jokes and stories between the songs. Quite the entertaining evening!
I saw him perform the whole album in Adelaide in 75? (I think), complete with gigantic inflatable dinosaur! At the interval he came out and said that he had a new album and was going to play it for us after the break. 6 Wives of Henry the 8th. What an amazing show! Will live with me forever. Thanks Rick!
My first ever concert in California, must have been 1974, was Wakeman at the Hollywood Bowl with the whole orchestra and choir on stage. Did the album live with dinosaur effects and all. It was something I will never forget. I must have been 13 or 14 years old. My 18 year old sister took me.
I'm the same age as your sister, and we had tickets to see him with YES right around that year or so . Well my friends that I was going with, dropped the acid we were gonna do at the concert the day before, and ended up in the hospital and nobody got to go. lol I'm lucky I didn't do any. lol Went to CAL JAM 2 a few years later.
Im a 2000s baby and im so Grateful for my pardy showing me incredible compositions like this one. While my music taste is mainly targeted towards bands like Black Sabbath and Rainbow, music like this will always be something that resonates with me because of the connection it built between us. Recently Ive been getting into buying records( my collection consists of 1 Dio record and 1 Nirvana record, so still incredibly small), and i stumbled on a record version of Wakeman's recording in the london hall in 1974, I practically gasped, especially considering my Pardy was talking about it yesterday, I begged my mum to buy it for my Pardy and I and (luckily) she obliged. Im not sure if my Pardy already has the record or not but if he doesnt im definitely gonna keep it 🤫 Music like this is so much better than mainstream pop and the recycled noise they play on the radio.

Rick will be forever the king of keyboards. First heard this album when I was 12. I’m 60 now. Hope he gets knighted soon, then he will be a real Knight of the Round Table.
I remember seeing the original production on PBS when I was a kid. How I wish I could get a video of that! Not just the size and pageantry, but watching Wakeman in his "fortress of keyboards". He would be playing one front of him, and a totally different part on a keyboard directly behind him, sight unseen 🤯
ok so, i listened to the album journey to the center of the earth with my dad when i was about 7/8 years old, and hearing it again after many years has comforted my heart. I listened to this wonder on long car rides with him, and we tried to sing, both vocals and instruments with him lol anyway, I just wanted to thank you for the existence of this gem that helped me a lot on the path of life.
Saw this show in Dallas at least 40 yrs ago. Was remarkable back then. I had the 8-track so when saw the show was coming to us, I and a friend hit it. Little did I know it was just the beginning of a fateful night! But what a show. I got excellent seats!
Rick Wakeman, o que esse fantástico músico fez em favor do pop mundial naquela época era pura obra de arte, aranjos fenomenais em sua ilha de teclados, a mistura da imponência do erudito com a irreverência do rock and roll. MAGO!!!

I remember seeing him perform this at the National Federation of 18 Plus Groups annual get-together at Caister Holiday Camp, a few miles north of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, UK, circa late 1980’s/early 1990’s. He was playing keyboards with one hand and taking sips out of a bottle of beer with the other hand. Happy times, happy memories.

Even without backup accompaniment by orchestra and choir, this version of Wakeman's incredible, musical retelling of Jules Verne's classic is a stunning masterpiece! His mastery of numerous keyboards is unmatched by anyone I have ever seen or heard! It is like hearing the show for the first time! The vocalist handles the story well enough, over-emphasizing at points with notes not heard by the original singers in the album of 1974, but the entire performance, without the narrative script, is impressive and memorable! Thanks for this reimagined, stirring, visual upload on one of my favorite albums!

I knew Rick when he recorded THIS album for the 1st time, in 1974. I was 15 years old and became a fan of his amazing work.
Well to be fair, it was pretentious drivel. The narration was great. This is much nicer.
I saw that show in Madison Square garden. One hell of a great time
So did I.
