Little Miss D, whoever she is, really deserves a really big thank you on submitting these samples to you this time around, I would like to add a little history to some of the desserts, that have been tasted here. As a former Eastern Bloc country, mutually banning articles coming into, and going out of the country, there was a bit of deprivation in candies, so local factories came up with their own, at many times continuing the tradition laid down in the '30s of the last century. Szerencs had sugar manufacturing in Northeastern Hungary, so it was "evident", that a chocolate factory was placed there. One of those products, that Miss Emmy tasted has also a teaching value, since every animal that appeared on those chocolates are being printed with their initial letter, thereby helping small children to learn letters, and pronounce them. Dunakavics (cs is to be pronounced as ch, like in challenge, if it is helpful) and Francia Drazsé are traditional, Bonbonetti took over after the end of Cold War. A little side rant, before the change in system, packaging was smaller, and content was bigger;) Stühmer is a very old name in Hungarian dessert manufacture, however absent under socialism, and the first two decades, only returning recently, and most of their products are very tasty, and also being artisanal, therefore more accessable financially to more wealthier Hungarians, I myself had the delight like twice a year while I was still living in Hungary, if you plan to visit Hungary, their products are available in bigger stores, highly recommend to try them;) Négercsók had originally only a few flavor variants, and it is not easy to find good ones with impeccable texture. Télifagyi was a replacement in late socialism for the lack of ice cones parlors during bad weather months, and I'm guessing it was due to shipment, originally a thin chocolate layer is on the top of the cone. Venturing into the alcoholic desserts and candies, Dianás has a somewhat bad reputation, due to the fact, that it is cheap, and filled with alcohol, so during a prohibition of sales of alcohol to intoxicated persons before 9 AM, they simply bought this candies to get their fix. Szilvás Betyár on the other hand belongs to the artisanal desserts with alcohol, in this case, pálinka. I only recommend them, if you can "handle your liquor" as it is unlike Kókuszvarázs, which only contains rum aroma for taste, this baby is actually filled with 40% proof of pálinka. Variants exist, like Borbonetti, which is wine filled bonbons.
Thanks for all your terrific videos! When we travel we always make sure we try out the local snacks and are never disappointed, our latest Burma was quite interesting! Thanks again
It was such a great idea from Little Miss T (or D?) to send you these...most of these candies/sweets are traditional and their history goes way back some decades. These sweets are actually my childhood sweets :)
Aww, this video made me so nostalgic... dianás cukor (yes, the version with alcohol... underaged alchohol consuming is actually widely tolerated in Hungary) and téli fagyi (it can be translated as winter ice cream) were my childhood's favourite treats, I remember going to the small grocery store at the corner of our street to buy just one piece of dianás cukor. :D
I don't know if someone wrote it before me, but actually you got some right: melódia is a word for melody, francia means french and the Duna Kavics can be translated like "Duna rocks" :) If my English has some trouble, please forgive me, I'm just learning the language :)
Dear Emmy, I love your videos, and the way you describe the food you taste is very detailed. I also like that even if you don't like something, you just tell objective things about it without all the "yuk", "brr", "euhh" stuff that Hungarian food gets in other tasting videos :). Greetings from Hungary!
So, we decided to take our teens to the local Russian grocery in honor of your channel. We each got a candy based solely on packaging since the words were completely unrecognizable. One was like chocolate musty basement flavored. Another had super strong liqueur in very dark chocolate, and the remaining two had this rubbery, gelatinous, wet marshmallow funky stuff in them...one with no flavor and the other with a flowery perfume flavor. Aaaaaaack! It totally pays to have someone who knows something about the candies do the choosing. Love your channel! And we are going to have another EmmyEats day soon. Thanks for the inspiration.
I like to rewatch the videos of Hungarian treats, you actually got most of the meanings right. I hope someone will send you more Hungarian treats or even recipes to try
Just seeing this video now, 7 years late lol. I love how Emmy just casually drops the names of countries she's visited...oh, you know - when I was in Madagascar, when I was in Poland...as I film this from Japan. I am, to quote her, SO STINKIN' JEALOUS! Love your channel Emmy :D
YOU MADE ME SO HAPPY WITH TIHS VIDEO!!! Omg, sorry. I just watched over the other parts and then I saw that you made a 3rd part and it makes me so happy cause I'm from Hungary! :) I really loved this video and congratulation for the baby! :) :) (Tbh I started to think that someone should send you hungarian baby food...:D)
Hy I am from hungary ^^ Right now I am watching your video and when you eated the Ezüst kocka you said it is filled with marzipan, actually it is filled with perzipan what is made from the seed of the peach, if you crack that shell then you have this seed :). Sorry if I wrote anything or everything bad :"D , I am just studying the languege.
Kürtős kalács, túró rudi,mézes kalács, krumplicukor, tepertős pogácsa,lángos, paprikás krumpli, kolbász,hurka, try all of them and after the pregnancy try pálinka.
The last one you had is actually my town's (Szerencs) chocolate. So that's why it's called "szerencsi csokoládé". I'm absolutely obsessed with it and not just because it's being made here. We also have a chocolate festival in honor of the chocolate and the town's history with it. I'm so happy that you like it! :) Love your videos.:)
After watching all three episodes i've come to the conclusion that i didn't really realize that we have so many treats here in Hungary XD seeing them like this altogether is pretty shocking but awesome at the same time :D and all the sweets of my childhood were in there, oh my god! It's so cool!
Dear Emmy, Let me help you improving your hungarian a little bit :) For example "csók" (means kiss), we pronounce the first two letters (cs) like ch in chips. The SZ is s as in simple, and the letter s is spelled sh as in shoe.
I love to watch you eat stuff so much! It's so great how you seem to be actually surprised when you bite in something so ordinary as a butter cookie or whatever! Unfortunately I keep watching your videos late at night when I can't sleep and every single time I get hungry as a bear! :-) ***kisses***
ZoeGong Jah Ja som jej pred asi mesiacom poslala balíček a napísala mi, že mám vydržať a onedlho bude video so Slovenskými sladkosťami :) už sa neviem dočkať :) (brief translation: I already sent her a package of Slovak sweets, now waiting for the video, yay I can´t wait)
I don't know why but I love Hungary, could be because I'm football fan and they had one of the best football teams in the world, who can forget Puskas! Nice video :)
I'm curious. Do you give away the candy you can't eat all of, or do you eventually get through it by sharing with your husband and friends? Thanks for the video! You receive so many goodies. Haha.
There's a Wikipedia article on chocolate-coated marshmallow treats: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate-coated_marshmallow_treats In the UK we have the teacake which contains jam as well as the marshmallow
I should not be watching your vids at night haha, I have a sweet tooth. I get the late night cravings after I watch you eat all that chocolate. Yummmmm (:
Téli fagyi means winter ice cream. Arany and ezüst mean gold and silver. The pronunciation of the letter c is always like the start of つ/ツ. Expect in the letter cs, beacuse it's like the start of ち/チ.
I am Hungarian and I tasted them all. We have a very expensive brand of Stühmer. I have all kinds of chocolate szerencs letter it is because even when I was a little more collected , these are already all kinds of letters :) For me, my favorite Diana sugar pills and Francia drazsé . They are surrounded by a lot of retro sweets
In "Szilvás betyár" there is plum flavoured alchol named Pálinka, becouse "szilva" means plum :) "Téli fagyi" means wither icecream, kid love it in Hungary, Santa always bring them one :) "Néger Csók" is originally not flavoured but the one what was sent to you is raspberry flavoured Arany Desszert, Ezüst Desszert and Korfu kocka are all handmade chocolates :) "Szerencsi" is just a simple milk chocolate bar but Szerencs is a city in Hungary with a very famous chocolate factory! Lots of love from Hungary! :)
Loved this video! I noticed that it says one of your previous videos is a pig bento box, but it's not listed on your video list. I love all your bento box tutorials so hopefully it gets fixed soon!
I love Sixlets! one of my favorite candies but I am sure the version from Hungary had much better chocolate inside, my friend from Israel brought me a few chocolate bars from there and needless to say I am spoiled now by them, so much better than Hershey's or even Cadbury's delicious chocolate, you must try Israeli Chocolate (the ones I had were milk, and also dark chocolate SO good oh my god!) and also she brought me back some Chocolate covered Halvah bars which I love, lovely sesame seeds.
Greg Liptai Yes ,you are right. But do you know that actualy they don't call themselves Hungarians? They are Magyars.Totaly different people.Europeans called them Hungarians because that was the place where the Huns settled when they invaded Europe.
Emmy, just wanted to let you know.. with most candies and things even though it may smell of liquor or alcohol the alcohol content is normally cooked out before the alcohol is used. if not they have to specify due to age laws... whatnot. so even during pregnancy it is OK to have things with liquor or alcohol flavor in it as long as the actual alcohol content is gone :-) just a little tip :-)
In 2:34 what you eat Téli Fagyi(winter ice cream). I remember when i was 1-7 years old some day my mum bought in winter. In 3:49 what you eat it is Néger Csók(negro kiss(black and sweet)) :D It is an old sweets from 20th Century :D In 5:56 Dianás cukorka(candy): it is a 102 years old candy, but in old times it was not just sweets, medicine too. savory wine spirits: made: water, fine spirits, kithcen salt, ethyl acetate and menthol crystal. I remember when I was younger, I stole some of my parents chocolates and ate em, one of them had a rum filling in it...it was awful XD. made me think twice before taking candy from my parents lol
Hey Emmy! Idk if you know, but Miranda went to Scotland recently and has a lot of Scotland treats. Maybe you guys could do a colab tasting them! Just a suggestion/ something I would love to see. Love your videos btw.

Duna kavics = Danube gravel/rock
szilvás betyár = plum outlaw
Téli fagyi= Winter ice cream
Négercsók = black kiss (afro american kiss)
Kókuszvarázs = coconut magic

it's maybe easier if you tell her that "csók"(=kiss) is pronounced almost like "choke"... it's a bit funny if you think about it...
The fact that you love Miranda Sings just made me love you even more! :D
