  • I remove the spindle and replace the bull gear on my 922 Logan 11x36" Metal Lathe. I show how to get the spindle out and what is needed. This is a fairly simple task, but does require a little pounding to get it out. You can also do this on a press if you have one large enough.

    Alot not to take the time to repack spindle bearings and I would make sure the broken tooth is not in case

    One tooth missing on a bull gear is nothing it'll function normally don't even bother serious I have braised on homemade fashioned teeth in place without even removing him from the ways it's really easy

    Bearing sounded terrible hammering the shaft was not a good idea because it Brinell's the bearing raceways I pushed mine out in a press using split spaces years ago.

    HOW THE PINION GEAR IS FIXED IN SPINDLE

    • @precisionmachineshed
      @precisionmachineshed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bull gear is keyed. The smaller gear is floating with the pulley. The actual pinion gear on the back gear rack and pinion I believe is also keyed.

      If it's just a push fit means how it transmit while we put back gear syst

    I think I just bought some spindle bull gears and back gears from you?? Same style lathe, similar user name?

      +Jadon Cramer Hey Jordan, yes I sent you those. The first ones you received were off another lathe in better shape than my old lathe. I also have a video on the back gears too if you have not seen that one yet. Hope those work out for you and thanks for watching my videos! P.S. thanks for the gift too, been a busy week.

      I sold that lathe a few years back. I have a couple South bends now, but that was a good lathe, mine had some wear on it.

    My spindle gear is stuck on there you know any way to get it off?

    • @precisionmachineshed
      @precisionmachineshed  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kyle Lougnot Other than the outside locking nut the only other thing that holds it on is a key way. The best option would be to rig up a gear puller of some sort. Lightly tapping with a brass hammer could be done, but you would risk chipping a gear. You can also try tapping it on a little with a large pipe or nut which slides over the spindle and try and knock on then off. Sometimes the tightening movement is enough to break them loose.

      They are basically the same. Most parts will interchange.

    Hoping my 700 tears down similar to this. Looks to be so. I'm getting some groaning from the spindle bearings when I run up the tailstock and I believe it's time for a new set, or to at least tear it down and have a look. I found the lathe in a field under a ripped up canvas tarp completely froze up so it's a wonder the bearings went as long as they did.

      Hey should be the same procedure. I know my 11" lathe started making noise, but I sold it before I did much exploring to fix it. Great story about how you got it. Wish could find stuff like that. Good luck!

      +Precision Machine Shed Comes apart quite similar to yours. No bellville washers. Made me nervous taking a mallet to it but it all worked out. Talked to Scott at Logan actuators. $211, non-returnable, can't tell me where it's made, and the guy comes off as a bit arrogant to put it mildly. My bearing feels dry but absolutely no play I can feel. Have to put it against a dial but I'm thinking of solvent and re-pack with moly grease.

      Would be worth a shot. Yeah he is Scott Logan, the owner. He won't tell his sources, but I know they are good quality bearings. Very spendy, but should be the only set you'll ever need. Let me know how the re-pack goes.

    • @heliarche
      @heliarche 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll keep it in mind that it's definitely a good bearing then. I just wish he could tell me it isn't made in China. Kind of a tall order anymore but the people want cheap and now.

    • @intjonmiller
      @intjonmiller 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +heliarche Scott won't tell you more about the bearings because then you would have what you needed to find and order them yourself. Ball bearings are just not that expensive unless extraordinarily rare. And this is a 1200 rpm lathe, so it really doesn't need the highest grade of bearings either.
      Scott is making a pretty good living selling off old parts from his family's business, along with $25 for a digital scan of a lathe that is similar to, but not the same as, yours, and HEAVILY marked up bearings and such. I don't fault the guy for it, as that's capitalism and he has a good market opportunity (and it's not like he's running ads about being the cheapest source or anything.) But I also don't fault anyone who goes another route.
