  • Sericulture, or silk farming, is the cultivation of silkworms to produce silk.
Although there are several commercial species of silkworms, the caterpillar of the domestic silkmoth is the most widely used and intensively studied silkworm.
Silk was believed to have first been produced in China as early as the Neolithic period. Sericulture has become an important cottage industry in countries such as Iran, Brazil, China, France, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, and Russia.
In Iran, Gilan is considered one of the most suitable provinces of the country for silkworm breeding and Sericulture.
Gilan has more than 800 years of documented history in Sericulture industry and also has a high capacity in silkworm breeding.
More than 90 percent of the world's cocoon and silk production is concentrated in Asia, and Iran ranks eighth in the world production of silk thread.
Here we were accompanied by a farmer to learn more about the process of turning silkworms into silk cocoons.
