  • @stevenyoungkin7333

    Frankly, I'm surprised you didn't mention Owen Hart's death at Over the Edge in 1999. For those who don't remember, he was doing a gimmick at the time as the Blue Blazer where he would descend from the rafters into the ring (similar to a bit that Sting was doing in WCW at the time). At the PPV, he was supposed to drop to the ring for a match against The Godfather. He was supposed to lower just above the ring, act like he was entangled and then land on his face to comedic effect. While being lowered, though, he unintentionally triggered an early release, fell 78 feet, landing on a rope chest first, flipping him into the ring.
    None of this was shown on TV because a pre-taped segment was showing instead. When it did cut back to the arena, he was being worked on by doctors in the ring and Jim Ross repeatedly told viewers that this was NOT a wrestling angle and you could see that Jerry Lawler had no words to say either. Sadly, Hart ended up dying from his injuries.
    The crowd's reactions to this are still indescribable. It's one thing to see a person lose a match that you hoped would win. That's disappointing but it's all part of the business and, as fans, we know that's how storylines go. Likewise, it's a thing to see beloved wrestlers be "injured" in the ring. Once again, we know that is scripted and we know that it was written for Hennig to turn on Flair and injure him. Flair was prepared for it and was never truly hurt.
    It's an entirely OTHER matter to see anyone literally DIE in the ring. That's why JR had to keep telling viewers that this was NOT scripted or a stunt. After years of seeing bits similar to it, we would first think "Owen will recover and he'll do another match next seeking revenge for his 'accident' or something like that" but, sadly, that was not going to happen. What is even more controversial (and still is to this day) is that, even with Owen Hart (a wrestler well liked not just by fans but by fellow wrestlers) dying, Vince still carried on with the show. Jeff Jarrett (who was a very close friend of Owen and the entire Hart family) had to be literally shoved through the curtain for his match. Yeah, they did a lovely tribute show to him the next night on Raw but that still didn't change the fact that the PPV asked audiences to enjoy other matches even after just seeing a man die.

    • @filmbuff2777
      @filmbuff2777 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Even Lesnar didn't want this to happen, and he seemed upset when he did. After the Streak was over, Taker would still move on to get four more wins and another loss, this time by then 31-year-old Roman Reigns, who had been battling leukemia for years. After all this time since Taker's retirement in November 2020, all I can say is... Thank you, Taker. You're the best.

Shane McMahons splash from 50feet by stage entrance that gave him a concussion 3. Mick Foleys failed jump from the top of the cage on Undertaker

    I remember that night at War Games and the week following. Yeah, they sold the Ric Flair injury very well. The next week televised show, it was either Nitro or Thursday night Thunder, they opened the show with a headshot of Flair lying on a hospital gurney with a cone or funnel sticking out of his nose (I guess it was supposed to be his ventilator). 😂😂 They made it look like he was being prepared for surgery or something. And they made the tone sound so somber as to seen like Flair died from his head being smashed between the cage steel door.
