      They're pretty good mages, but all racial bonuses only matters at the beginning of the game. When you reach a higher level, they're not very noticeable.
      And actually, breton's racial bonuses, which is: Dragonskin, and Magical resistance makes him a little bit more durable against mages & especially against Dragons. That's very handy if you playing on legendary difficulty and wearing robes.
      But that's just my opinion...
      - Cheers

    I just wish ive gotten to Skyrim when it came out. Im a very recent player and have just beat the main quest. Everyone was so excited to see the videos in store for that time period. Here I am watching videos that are 1-3 years old. I feel so left out. But were all sons and daughters of skyrim!

    I love this and I am so looking forward to playing it out. I of course altered my story line though. Basically: On his way to The Mage's College, my dunmer, ran across 3 Vigilants of Stendarr that had been fallen upon by vampires. The fight had been horrific and the Vigilants had fallen and were dying. One Vampire remained, gravely wounded but still very much powerful. As she seeked to feed upon the dying Vigilants, the dunmer attacked. His one spell and low magicka pool being a severe detriment to his ability, he ran headlong into conflict. His only desire was to save those that needed help. The vampire was far more powerful than the dunmer could have imagined and it was all over far too quickly. He saw fading glimpses of someone standing over him as he faded in and out of consciousness. He could not recognize the figure but it carried with it a feeling of security.
    The vampire had bitten him, he did not know if he had beaten her or not. But Stendarr himself had come to the aid of the selfless dunmer and though he could not remove the curse entirely, he did give the dunmer a way to fight that which infected his blood.
    With a slightly different course, the dunmer avowed to cleanse the land of the scourge that had befallen it and as a Vigilant of Stendarr (Trained at the Mage's College), he prepared himself to drag Skyrim's affliction to the light.

    I'm genuinely impressed you manage to make builds that sound genuinely fun to play in unmodded skyrim. Even with the DLC it isn't particularly flexible in that regard, so it's apparent you had to do some thinking. Nice work.

  • @sobienz

    I never played a mage, simply because I never really knew how to manage them, not only in skyrim but all other fantasy rpg games, I always sticked with my elves and my bows, I just simply love the idea about it. but this video made me wanna at least try to play a mage once. for sure going to re-install skyrim now!

    • @EL-ISS
      @EL-ISS 9 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      StrawberrysDead You don't get the entire experience unless you try everything. I am like that too, though. Marksmen and agile/sneaky characters are always up my alley. Stamina is always bolsters because the bow zoom just eats it up and magic is never touched while health gets a few upgrades. But if you wanna try out magic try out conjuration and restoration. I got them both to max and it turned out to be pretty over powered haha.

    • @zion5818
      @zion5818 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I always favoured assassin's. Sneaky characters. Though in Skyrim there was so much, when I get my game fixed I'm gonna try a challenge to find every single sub-class that comes to mind and is possible.
      One handed mage for instance focuses more on defence than magicka because he has his sword he has to get up close with, but to weaken the enemy before he gets there he sprays magicka.
      Sub-classes are fun

    • @EL-ISS
      @EL-ISS 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hero Marth I ought to try that out, along side the battle mage modded armour!

    • @lughfiregod16
      @lughfiregod16 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      StrawberrysDead I'd recommend trying out a glass cannon with 100-200 health and put everyone else into magicka, then use all magic skills.
      If you want I can get you a build. :p

    • @thedarkmaster4747
      @thedarkmaster4747 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Jane Murphy LOL!!! idd recomend trying out a utilitarian/prodigy build. basically an anti class that specailizes in everything so it's horribily under powered early game but because you've a finger in every jar you can just teeth skin it' in every situation. ... late game you end up being the ultimate class... around level 100 and somewhere lol! probably twice that no that i think... but the problem with something like a glass cannon/grim reaper/pure snipper archer build in skyrim is you don't really have the speed to get out of the way.

  • @cogtroper
    @cogtroper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    I find the impact perk absolutely indespensable when using a full mage build, the stagger is essential to keep mellee enemies away and playing with a breton you get magical resistances, being range enemies with bows your weakness. In the higher difficulties, arrows form strong enemies can pretty much one shot you if you have a full mage build.

    playing pure mage with only robes and clothing is the most difficult playstyle early on, anything other than that is a spellsword or battlemage. only a staff and a dagger as weapons is considered pure mage, later on the dragonhide flesh spell makes both light and heavy armor useless, and on top of that the dragon aspect shout + lord stone gives another 150 extra in armor rating.

    • @BearWith_You
      @BearWith_You 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would use gloves and boots if the mage's guild actually gave you gloves and boots with a beneficial enchantment. Until you can do your own that dont suck, playing pure mage is honestly pointless

    ESO you are awesome man! Ever since I got the Skyrim Special Edition I been creating my characters based on your builds. They kick total ass and I really appreciate all you do for us and sharing your knowledge. The only thing I find hard to do sometimes with my characters is creating armor. I use my points towards my major skills and smithing isn't ever one of them. It takes me awhile to level up all the way to create such amazing armor. Usually I just find what I need through treasure hunting and quests. Other then that everything is great! Keep up the awesome work!

  • @Unevenedge
    @Unevenedge 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This has probably been mentioned before, but Fortify Health isn't hard to find. You can find three rings that you can disenchant during the Mage's Guild questline. They're all three in Saarthal, when you're asked to look for stuff. There are even arrows to point you to them as they are part of the quest.

    I have an alternate backstory for this build. Your name is Agolath and you are of a long lost race called the Seraph, a race of experienced mages who are a mix between the dwarven and snow elf races. This race is highly skilled, wise and blessed with long life. You were born into royalty in the ancient land of Deloria and since a young age, you were exceptional in the art of magic even for a Seraph. You also had the unique ability, due to the royal blood, to produce a magical force using nothing but your voice. You were born around three thousand years ago and have devoted your life to the study and mastery of magic. Since the death of your father, king of Deloria you were heir to the throne but never saw the thrill in ruling. After you refused the throne, you were exiled from the great city of Deloria and lived a rogue life for 124 years. Soon, rumors spread of great beasts rising from their graves, destroying villages leaving no survivors far to the east across the great sea in the land of Tamriel. Once you realized you had nothing left in Deloria, you hired a ship and embarked on a long journey across the great sea to investigate the rumors. Four months later, you arrived on the shores of Hammerfell, which you have only heard faint stories about from a young age. The boat's captain gifted you a horse and bid you farewell on their way back to Deloria. Heading North East, you eventually came to the border of Skyrim, the place where the rumors originared. While crossing the border, you were caught in what appeared to be a political arrest, you were mistook for a Stormcloak soldier and arrested along with them. You were stripped of your possessions and placed on a cart destination, Helgan. (To create the Seraph race, use a high elf with black eyes and grey hair, use the most muscular setting.) (The Seraph race uses every school of magic including shouts and abilities.)

    You don't need the Morokai mask. If you want to be a Blood Mage you could also put all points into Health and use Fortify Magicka, Fortify Health Regeneration and Fortify Destruction on all your gear wherever possible. The best legit maximum you can get through Enchantments is +101% magicka on each item.
    Of course for a pure Mage character (without relying on blood) you can fortify each item with 101% magicka and 101% magicka regeneration. This even outcast the Ring of the Erudite.

So far its destruction cost reduction until I get Equilibrium. Personally going for light armor since the vampire armors are really cool.

    While I do love and respect mages and magic in Skyrim respectively, I found that a melee build tended to get the job done quicker and easier. That's not to say I don't use magic at all, because I do sometimes. I tend to heavily rely on various powers such as Secret of Protection, Dragonskin, and Mora's Boon. Perhaps I'm not the magic type?

    altered this slightly, more from a role play standpoint. played him as a pursuer of knowledge. kept the blood mage stuff, and the lightning, and the like. but I played him as someone searching for ultimate knowledge. added some staves to the mix, and a little Necromancy. all the classic "looking for forbidden knowledge" tropes. hell, getting Mirak's tentacle stuff made this awesome.
    and the RP bit, I put some restrictions. at the very least, every skill book, and every spellbook which he didn't learn, he kept. as well as any books I found which fit his quest for knowledge. when I finally had a house, I filled my bookcases. X3. after that, I went after a bunch of daedric artifacts.

    Idea for new build, which is very expendable and can be made even in the stock game. Build name is "The Reaper"
    Starting with the back story:
    "Grim" was a young nordic child in Skyrim, only son and heir of a wealthy merchant. Grim's father got drunk and gambled his house away, homeless, the family relocated to Morrowind after hearing that there was a family that was willing to employ him as their financial consultant. When Grim's family arrived there, the family who was supposed to employ them turned against them and enslaved the family. The father died within the first year. Grim's owners, at first (since he was only a kid), keep him as the assistant of his owners personal smith, where grim picks up smithing. When Grim is older, he is taught enchanting. With his respectable knowledge of smithing and enchanting, he is able to make a large amount of weapons and armours and enchant them. When Grim was 20, his owners were attacked and killed by bandits, and his mother and him were taken by the bandits. The mother was assaulted multiple times and died. Grim hid his anger and offered to join the bandits, who agreed. After 3 years of vigorous training in Heavy Armour and Two-Handed, in the cover of night, he killed the bandits without flinching once. He then started to make his way back to his homeland, skyrim. He was caught on the borders (where the game begins). He is caught and when the dragon attacks, he is killed (keep reading!). He then finds himself in-front of the lord Molag Bal. Molag Bal says that he is surprised to find him here! Molag Bal says that it is not "his time" and offers to send him back, at a price. He is to be ruthless and kill nearly everyone or everything that gets in his way in the name of Molag Bal. He is to "reap" their souls. Grim, seeing no other way out, agrees. He finds himself sent back to the very beginning of the game. Finding out he's dragonborn only helps with his reaping of souls, and he obviously becomes a vampire (due to Molag Bal), and kills everyone that get's in his way. Eventually Grim's legend grew and he became known as "The Reaper."
    Grim uses enchanted two handed weapons, wears enchanted Daedric Armour Specifically he uses the Dragonbone or Daedric BattleAxe (2h axe). If they're playing on PC they can get a very popular mod from the nexus called "immerseive weapons" where Grim can be equipped with a dragon scythe! (I would recommend mentioning the scythe part as it really helps with role-playing)
    The only perks he really has are Two-Handed, Heavy Armour, Enchanting, Smithing.
    Hope this makes it on the show! Thanks.

    This is a fantastic guide with great links to get and/or find the things you need to make you powerful in the mage class. I also think it's worth a mention that this build would be of great use in Dwemer ruins, or very deep caves since I find I'm always running out of supplies. i thank you for the long explanation, and the great video. Also, as a roleplayer, I think you did a fantastic job with that as well. :) This build would be my only and favorite! because i'm sick of starting over and having to face those awful deep caves over and over again. i however, am a werewolf so while i won't be a vampire I am part of the dark brotherhood. Converting magicka to magicka is as useless as a jelly pickaxe. To summarise. Equilibrium doesnt cost any magicka in the first place. There's no need for the novice alteration perk!

    I really want to try this, but how do you get around the magicka requirement for higher level spells? If I'm putting most of my points into health, I'm assuming I'll have a smaller pool of magicka, which means I won't be able to cast high level spells until I unlock a considerable amount of perks. The problem there is that if I can't cast high level spells, leveling my destruction will be extremely slow. Do you have any advice?

    • @ESOdanny
      @ESOdanny  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Id suggest leveling both health but mainly magicka at early levels and then throwing the rest in health later in the game. You wont get equilibrium until late in the mage guild anyway.

    • @LibraritheWizardOfficial
      @LibraritheWizardOfficial 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best way to level Destruction is to put your fire spells in the trash can. Flames in particular was nerfed by Dawnguard to provide an extremely low amount of XP per magicka spent, and to top it off you aren't getting skill XP from the damage over time effect of fire spells.
      Also, don't dual-cast Destruction spells unless you are deliberately staggering an opponent. It uses over 2x the magicka cost of a single cast, but doesn't increase skill XP at all.

    • @ESOdanny
      @ESOdanny  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its based on the damage you do per second which then gives you X amount of exp. If anything fire damage was buffed because all vampires have a % weakness to it in Dawnguard. You likely thought that because you were doing the same amount of damage but taking longer to get from level 10-20 compared to 50-60.

    • @LibraritheWizardOfficial
      @LibraritheWizardOfficial 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is conventional belief, but in-game testing easily proves it's false. In the anecdotal sense as well as the more accurate testing via console commands, try sending a greenhorn through Bleak Falls with only a single source of damage: either Flames or Sparks.

    I'd like to suggest my control mage build. Alteration school simply for spell resistance and Atronach perks. Use of Telekinesis is handy too, for picking up items that may trigger traps or alert enemies.
    Conjuration is invested in for all perks beneficial to Necromancy. Bound Weapon perks are handy too, since they can be used to deal damage, soul trap, and banish (summoned) daedra/atronachs (one hit). Finally illusion is fully invested in as well.
    Alteration controls the physical world, Conjuration controls the dead, Illusion controls the living.

    I clicked on this video because I was curious about other builds, and starting up a "pure mage" of my own. Up until now I had done a battle cleric type build, two-handed hammer brute, werewolf cannibal, but never a pure mage. The closest I ever got was an illusionist that used the x15 dagger damage off a sneak attack and a combination of invisibility, calm, and muffle. As you can tell, not the "deadly fire and brimstone from the skies" type, but still effective. I feel so stupid as to have missed this kind of build when I'd use Equilibrium to recharge my magicka (and Fast Healing to make sure I never killed myself) when using Transmute to try and get through a bunch of iron I had bought/mined.

    • @blastcakes
      @blastcakes 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and I forgot to mention my other "mage" that'd just wear clothing to benefit from the Mage Armour perks and use the Bound Battle Axe as well. Once again, not the "incinerate you from the inside" type, but overall still effective. Hits 450 armour with the Ebonskin spell, Dragon Aspect shout, and Lord Stone.
