This is such a nostalgic song for me! I loved it when I was a kiddo, even though I didn't quite grasp the reasoning/purpose behind it other than it was for a good cause. Having all of those amazing voices on one song was unheard of... at least in my neck of the woods. Bruce and Ray were my faves in the video. Hearing it nowadays makes me emotional and a bit teary-eyed. I really do miss the 80s. They redid the song a few years back with Miley Cyrus and others, but it didn't hit the same for me. The making of this is something to see, you get the behind-the-scenes of how it came together, and lots of practice. The artists came directly from an awards show and worked all night on this. They all volunteered their time for a very worthy cause.
I was 18 and working in a record store in West L.A. when this came out, and it was astonishing how many people bought multiple copies just to contribute more to the cause. And from what we could tell, it wasn't even about the song in many cases. It was literally on the radio every two seconds and you couldn't avoid seeing the video if you tried because there were only a few outlets that aired music videos at the time, so hearing the song for free was no problem. Contributing directly to a cause wasn't so easy back then, so many people just paid $1.69 per 7" single and gave them away. That was a great time to have that job (and we also had a TicketMaster in the store, so we saw EVERYBODY in concert 😁).

A recent similar music all-stars for charity project is Mark Knopfler's "Guitar Heroes -- Going Home" from March, 2024, which raised money for teen cancer causes in the US and UK. He got over 60 of the best guitar players to record an instrumental arrangement of Knopfler's theme from the film "Local Hero". Musicians include Joan Armatrading, Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa, Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, Sheryl Crow, Peter Frampton, Brian May, Brad Paisley, Slash, & Bruce Springsteen, with Ringo Starr and his son Zak Starkey on percussion and Roger Daltrey on harmonica. They weren't all together at once and there is no video of them playing, but the official video identifies all the players.

I remember when this was done. Many cities including my own city held large gatherings for ppl to come together to watch the performance on huge screens outdoors. A recent similar music all-stars for charity project is Mark Knopfler's "Guitar Heroes -- Going Home" from March, 2024, which raised money for teen cancer causes in the US and UK. He got over 60 of the best guitar players to record an instrumental arrangement of Knopfler's theme from the film "Local Hero". Musicians include Joan Armatrading, Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa, Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, Sheryl Crow, Peter Frampton, Brian May, Brad Paisley, Slash, & Bruce Springsteen, with Ringo Starr and his son Zak Starkey on percussion and Roger Daltrey on harmonica. They weren't all together at once and there is no video of them playing, but the official video identifies all the players.

I remember when this was done. Many cities including my own city held large gatherings for ppl to come together to watch the performance on huge screens outdoors. What a night , amazing people who took their time to join together to help ppl on the other side of the world. Whatever happened to that in this country?

I had no idea that Waylon Jennings was supposed to take part. Don't have anything bad to say about him dipping though cause he was one of my favorite outlaws. A definite legend❤
