I would not suggest that the song I am about to suggest is better than We Are The World, but when Haiti had its earthquake, Canada did a tribute song, Wavin' Flag as done by Young Artists For Canada. It is quite a good song - but I am in no way saying it is as good as We Are The World - but is certianly worth a listen. Check it out.
When this song came out, I was working at a radio station in Seattle. There was a thing where every radio station in the country was supposed to play it at a specific time. When the time came, we plugged it in. IO went to a radio and acanned all 44 radio stations in Seattle. Every one of them was playing We Are The World. Rock, pop country news/talk, sports/talk, Christian, every one of them. I still get shivers when I remember it.
Which radio station? I was owning and operating an independent record store in Seattle in 1985 (and for ten years before that and for 10 years after that) and, of course, "We Are the World" was our best selling 45 of that year and probably of every other year as well.
Same here. I was at Q107 in Charleston, SC and we took part in that. We checked the other stations in town also and they were all playing it. It made me tear up a little bit but I was only 17 so everything made me emotional. LOL

Actually the biggest event of the 80s was Live Aid as the live summit of all the songs, artists and bands from all over the world contributing. Certainly the biggest live music event ever.

The guy with the soulful voice (10:44) is James ingram, very very humble and underrated artist. He wrote arguably the best song on Michael's Thriller album, Pretty young thing and a has few solid hits of his own, he was a force in the 80s, he also did the soundtrack for the American tail animation cartoon in 80s, check out the song, somewhere out there. - he just passed away few years back but he was an amazing artist

The guy you said was Billy Ocean, he is Jeffrey Osborne, one of the great artists that actually had success with a group and great solo success. He was the former lead singer of the legendary R&B/ Soul group LTD, with many funk hits and love ballads from the 70’s, and he went solo in the 80’s and had great r&B and pop success, and he is still performing and touring today.

So, I’m old enough to remember when this happened. I think it’s really important for you, and everyone else of your generation to research what was happening in Ethiopia, Africa in 1985 to create this. It wasn’t just about music, it was a massive effort to raise money to save people from starvation. Children were so malnutritioned and so dehydrated we saw their skeletal bone structure. It was horrific.

This was my childhood. I was 10 at the time, and I already knew so much about many of these artists. Not long after this song was released, my family took place in “Hands across America” where we drove to an pre-determined section of the interstate outside of our St. Louis home to join hands as part of a human chain across the country.
Same, I was also 10/11 at the time....and only about 2.5 hours north! Glad we took part in this era/event together! 80's/90's were the greatest times of my life! ✌

The music was almost family, and the songs became part of the fabric of who you were. I’ve spent decades building a productive and meaningful life, but man, what I wouldn’t give to just go back for a few days and just hang out in my room with my radio and MTV.
I was a young teenager when this was created.....and it STILL makes tears roll and my heart sing with love for mankind. This one song proves that when we come together with love, we can create magic.

There are several videos on TH-cam that show "the making of ‘We Are The World’" & what’s interesting is the amount of time it took to record this. It had to be done in one night, after the Grammy Awards so they could grab so many artist’s that they wanted to participate. I loved the documentary about this song! Michael skipped the awards show to start recording before the other singers; they all came directly from the show late at night; they recorded the chorus first and the individual voices later; they all sang Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) from Harry Belafonte just for fun; they had to stop recording when Cindy Lauper sang because her necklaces where making too much noise; they all asked for each-others autographs, etc. All in all an awesome night!

Suggestion: do this again on your second YT anniversary, but do it live. It’ll help you fill in gaps with the “lesser” known/unknown and not-solo’d artists, like Dan Aykroyd isn’t a considered a professional singer, but a widely-recognized comedic actor (Ghostbusters as an example) who sang in the chorus.

Huey Lewis and "the News" was actually Elvis Costello's back up band for Costello's album, "My Aim is True." Though Lewis did not appear on the album either as a singer or playing his trademark harmonica, he once said that "All the harmonica that isn’t on the Elvis Costello record was played by me."
If you watch Bruce during his later solo parts closely, you see him tearing up and blinking then closing his eyes to hold them back. I think this just shows how emotional both the song is and some singers can get.

Hands down the greatest collaboration of iconic singers in the history of music videos...There isn't even a 2nd place...None of them were paid, but they happily came together to lend their immense talents to a great cause.
Not only did they come unpaid, but even more had to be turned away because there wasn't room for all of them. I can imagine even the B team would have knocked it out of the park.
I was 15 when this song came out. It was HUGE! This song and "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid were were written to raise awareness and money for the starvation of the people in Africa. There was also Hands Across America which was a day that was planned when the American people all formed a human chain by holding hands from coast to coast. If i remember correctly, that was also to raise awareness for Africa.I was a part of that chain along with my family and some friends. It was amazing how we all came together then. Such sweet memories.
There will never be another moment like this in music. The talent that came together on one song. It still wows me -- and makes me emotional. And hearing it, I'm 25 again.
If you ever get a chance, you should react to Phil Collins' with the band Genesis and their video to the song Land of Confusion. Its a great song, also very powerful meaning, but the best part is that its a tribute to all things 80s using puppets, even a reenactment to this music video.
@@btgiv6009 It was 80s music not political philosophy. It didn't have the breathing room to be challenging the political status quo as in the 60s and 70s. Genesis were very risque in creating Land of Confusion as big record labels were steering away from politically sensitive material at a time when powerful political zealots in many Western nations were not above threatening to have radio stations boycott that type of material so artists often alluded to the issues rather than smack the public in the face with it.
Brilliant choice. Phil Collins played his last ever live performance at The O2 Arena London (brilliant venue) a few nights ago with his band Genesis, was delayed concert due to covid. Massive Phil Collins fan, esp his 80's early 90's music. His tickets are like Rockinghorse sh!£,sold out in minutes, and rarely on sale unless ticket touts. Even tho his body is failing Phil, his mind and voice is still there, whitty as anything.
We must remember the cause was for starving people of Ethiopia & East Africa this is why these wonderful artists gathered. They did an amazing thing for humanity, more than we see today. I remember when I first heard this, my heart was in despair for the starving but my heart also was filled with joy for what the singers accomplished 💔❤️🩹☮️🇨🇦. We are the World - we have to do better, we are one 🫶🏽
Don't leave out the great Quincy Jones conducting the crew. I think he has the most Grammy's of anyone, and he had the clout and influence to bring this crew together and direct through something special. I love that they had a sign "check your egos at the door" to make all this work. What's even more amazing is the ones who did not get solos like Lindsey Buckingham and a few others. This song touches so deeply. I'm a big fan of so many of those artists, but every time I hear Ray's voice, the already big lump in my throat triples in size. I'm so glad you revisited this song. Now you can see how huge this was back in the day. So many of them are gone now. You really need to check out Al Jarreau! He sang Moonlighting and a few others. For those who were to witness those momentous events of the 1985 recordings of both the USA version and the UK version of the charity relief response to the Ethiopia famine to then culminate in the Live Aid mega concerts that year for the above cause, it will forever remain 1 of the most powerful chapters in human history and to retell to future generations. So much was achieved to help those people in that great famine, even now I can still recall the power of those news reports of the day. Despite the major barriers in technology that was available at the time, the simultaneous broadcast that was the Live Aid concerts in Wembley London and JFK Philadelphia happened and for that period of time through the charity recordings through to Live Aid in 85 a huge chunk of this planets population was indeed united for that cause. It was a time that people power and the great of music really did merge like never before, and never will be again, and for those who were alive to see it - we are the lucky ones.
Harry Chapin died a few years before this recording, but they had a tribute concert to him held at Carnegie Hall. I think you missed Al Jarreau. He had a bunch of hits. My favorite song he recorded, though, was the theme song to the sitcom Moonlighting. It's very romantic; and his voice is really sweet on it. I think you might have also missed Diana Ross and Daryl Hall (and John Oates in the chorus) And it looks like you weren't sure about Kenny Loggins (also a big 80s hitter; among other things, he's the voice behind the song Footloose). But overall, seriously fun to watch you guys recognize almost all of them. Here's another challenge. There are a lot of legends in that chorus that didn't have solo parts. I must reiterate - as much as I love watching you re-visit this song, there were OTHER tribut songs for Ethioopia done at that time - you have reacted to the British one ("Do They Know It's Christmas?") but it is HIGH TIME you reacted to CANADA'S song Tears Are Not Enough! It is great! It includes many of the artists you have already reacted to: Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Corey Hart, Bryan Adams, Mike Reno (lead singer of Loverboy), Burton Cummings (lead singer of The Guess Who) and others. Interesting little piece of trivia, this was recorded immediately following that year's American Music Awards ceremony and most of the musicians went from the ceremony right to the recording studio. All told 45 artists were involved with the recording with another 50 having been turned away at the studio door.

When Bruce first sang his part during the recording session, he sang it smoothly in what he thought was his best voice. Quincy Jones, who produced it, was a bit taken aback and said,."No, sing it like Bruce, man!" Bruce then did his rough sound, and Quincy said, "Now that's what we're looking for!"
Sometimes i hear him sing and the raspy voice isn't there which i find disappointing nevertheless he sounds great.

I would not suggest that the song I am about to suggest is better than We Are The World, but when Haiti had its earthquake, Canada did a tribute song, Wavin' Flag as done by Young Artists For Canada. It is quite a good song - but I am in no way saying it is as good as We Are The World - but is certianly worth a listen. Check it out.

When this song came out, I was working at a radio station in Seattle. There was a thing where every radio station in the country was supposed to play it at a specific time. When the time came, we plugged it in. IO went to a radio and acanned all 44 radio stations in Seattle. Every one of them was playing We Are The World. Rock, pop country news/talk, sports/talk, Christian, every one of them. I still get shivers when I remember it.
Which radio station? I was owning and operating an independent record store in Seattle in 1985 (and for ten years before that and for 10 years after that) and, of course, "We Are the World" was our best selling 45 of that year and probably of every other year as well.

Actually the biggest event of the 80s was Live Aid as the live summit of all the songs, artists and bands from all over the world contributing. Certainly the biggest live music event ever.

He was the former lead singer of the legendary R&B/ Soul group LTD, with many funk hits and love ballads from the 70’s, and he went solo in the 80’s and had great r&B and pop success, and he is still performing and touring today.

So, I’m old enough to remember when this happened. I think it’s really important for you, and everyone else of your generation to research what was happening in Ethiopia, Africa in 1985 to create this. It wasn’t just about music, it was a massive effort to raise money to save people from starvation. Children were so malnutritioned and so dehydrated we saw their skeletal bone structure. It was horrific.

This was my childhood. I was 10 at the time, and I already knew so much about many of these artists. Not long after this song was released, my family took place in “Hands across America” where we drove to an pre-determined section of the interstate outside of our St. Louis home to join hands as part of a human chain across the country.
Same, I was also 10/11 at the time....and only about 2.5 hours north! Glad we took part in this era/event together! 80's/90's were the greatest times of my life! ✌

The music was almost family, and the songs became part of the fabric of who you were. I’ve spent decades building a productive and meaningful life, but man, what I wouldn’t give to just go back for a few days and just hang out in my room with my radio and MTV.
I was a young teenager when this was created.....and it STILL makes tears roll and my heart sing with love for mankind. This one song proves that when we come together with love, we can create magic.

Younger people never recognize Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates, the most successful popular duo of all time. His voice was my favorite from not just the era, but perhaps the last 60 years.

There are several videos on TH-cam that show "the making of ‘We Are The World’" & what’s interesting is the amount of time it took to record this. It had to be done in one night, after the Grammy Awards so they could grab so many artist’s that they wanted to participate. It’s been told that every person was told to leave their egos at the door ✌️☮️

James Ingram was an amazing soulful singer. He had a MASSIVE hit during my childhood with his duet with Linda Ronstadt for the animated movie An American Tail. The song was Somewhere Out There.
I loved the documentary about this song! Michael skipped the awards show to start recording before the other singers; they all came directly from the show late at night; they recorded the chorus first and the individual voices later; they all sang Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) from Harry Belafonte just for fun; they had to stop recording when Cindy Lauper sang because her necklaces where making too much noise; they all asked for each-others autographs, etc. All in all an awesome night!

I never get tired of watching this. I was 10 when it first aired on MTV. I remember my school collecting money for Africa. It was a huge deal at the time. Thank you for re watching this masterpiece. Also, there is a newer version but it was for Haiti after that massive earthquake. Its pretty good too

Suggestion: do this again on your second YT anniversary, but do it live. It’ll help you fill in gaps with the “lesser” known/unknown and not-solo’d artists, like Dan Aykroyd isn’t a considered a professional singer, but a widely-recognized comedic actor (Ghostbusters as an example) who sang in the chorus.
Dan Aykroyd was in The Blue Brothers and you reacted to Soul Man. John Belushi did most the lead vocals, though. Check out Sweet Home Chicago, Who's Makin' Love, Hey Bartender, or Rubber Biscuit. When the movie channel gets up and running, you need to react to that movie!!!

I was born in 2001 but my mom (born '77) would play a lot of 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's music growing up. I am so thankful for that, for knowing these absolute legends. It really began my love for music.

Huey Lewis and "the News" was actually Elvis Costello's back up band for Costello's album, "My Aim is True." Though Lewis did not appear on the album either as a singer or playing his trademark harmonica, he once said that "All the harmonica that isn’t on the Elvis Costello record was played by me."

I was 15 when this song came out. It was HUGE! This song and "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid were were written to raise awareness and money for the starvation of the people in Africa. There was also Hands Across America which was a day that was planned when the American people all formed a human chain by holding hands from coast to coast. If i remember correctly, that was also to raise awareness for Africa.I was a part of that chain along with my family and some friends. It was amazing how we all came together then. Such sweet memories.
There will never be another moment like this in music. The talent that came together on one song. It still wows me -- and makes me emotional. And hearing it, I'm 25 again.

If you ever get a chance, you should react to Phil Collins' with the band Genesis and their video to the song Land of Confusion. Its a great song, also very powerful meaning, but the best part is that its a tribute to all things 80s using puppets, even a reenactment to this music video.

Genesis were very risque in creating Land of Confusion as big record labels were steering away from politically sensitive material at a time when powerful political zealots in many Western nations were not above threatening to have radio stations boycott that type of material so artists often alluded to the issues rather than smack the public in the face with it.
Brilliant choice. Phil Collins played his last ever live performance at The O2 Arena London (brilliant venue) a few nights ago with his band Genesis, was delayed concert due to covid. Massive Phil Collins fan, esp his 80's early 90's music. His tickets are like Rockinghorse sh!£,sold out in minutes, and rarely on sale unless ticket touts. Even tho his body is failing Phil, his mind and voice is still there, whitty as anything.
We must remember the cause was for starving people of Ethiopia & East Africa this is why these wonderful artists gathered. They did an amazing thing for humanity, more than we see today. I remember when I first heard this, my heart was in despair for the starving but my heart also was filled with joy for what the singers accomplished 💔❤️🩹☮️🇨🇦. We are the World - we have to do better, we are one 🫶🏽

I'm so glad you revisited this song. Now you can see how huge this was back in the day. So many of them are gone now. You really need to check out Al Jarreau! He sang Moonlighting and a few others. Hughey Lewis is another one you should check out. I think that was James Ingram. He sang "Somewhere out there" with Linda Ronstadt.
Netflix has a documentary on this The Greatest Night in Pop. It's awesome!
For those who were to witness those momentous events of the 1985 recordings of both the USA version and the UK version of the charity relief response to the Ethiopia famine to then culminate in the Live Aid mega concerts that year for the above cause, it will forever remain 1 of the most powerful chapters in human history and to retell to future generations. So much was achieved to help those people in that great famine, even now I can still recall the power of those news reports of the day. Despite the major barriers in technology that was available at the time, the simultaneous broadcast that was the Live Aid concerts in Wembley London and JFK Philadelphia happened and for that period of time through the charity recordings through to Live Aid in 85 a huge chunk of this planets population was indeed united for that cause. It was a time that people power and the great of music really did merge like never before, and never will be again, and for those who were alive to see it - we are the lucky ones.
Harry Chapin died a few years before this recording, but they had a tribute concert to him held at Carnegie Hall. He had a wonderful song that spoke to what he power of music could be and Bruce Springsteen performed the cover of it.

I wonder if it will ever be that for us again, but "We are the World" was a pure embodiment of that sentiment for a brief moment, and you are absolutely right, those of us who were alive and remember that period were the ones lucky enough to bear witness to an absolutely magical moment in time.
I think the UK one was late 1984 and hit the top spot for Christmas that year
it was all the brainchild of sir bob geldof of the boomtown rats. a great humanitarian, who also played the role of "pink" in the movie version of "pink floyd the wall".
So now you know how us eighties kids felt when we saw this premiere, and why the song meant so much to us. This was a fun idea you guys had; after a year of reacting to all these wonderful musicians. I think you missed Al Jarreau. He had a bunch of hits. My favorite song he recorded, though, was the theme song to the sitcom Moonlighting. It's very romantic; and his voice is really sweet on it. I think you might have also missed Diana Ross and Daryl Hall (and John Oates in the chorus) And it looks like you weren't sure about Kenny Loggins (also a big 80s hitter; among other things, he's the voice behind the song Footloose). But overall, seriously fun to watch you guys recognize almost all of them. Here's another challenge. There are a lot of legends in that chorus that didn't have solo parts. And I do mean some serious legends. After a few more months of reactions, do the video again and see how many people in the chorus you can pick out ;)
It's still so POWERFUL, 30+ years after it came out! I was when it came out - and it's nostalgic now ALONG with the message it sends.

Love all of the participants in this song but my favorite of all time was is and will always be MJ!!! It still just doesn't seem right how he passed so quickly. I remember the day it happened. I was working as a RN and in between seeing my patients I saw it on the news. Omg I cried off n on all shift. I know I sound nuts but I have always love the Jackson 5 and MJ as an independent artist but I also loved how much care he had for those less fortunate financially and the earth...and feeding the poor ect. How much he loved people and especially the care he had for feeding children abroad ect. There will never be another MJ..
The year has passed by in a rush! I envy your trip through recorded music. It took me most of 60 years to listen to the music y'all have experienced in the last year! But I have good news. You still have a huge amount of wonderful music and great bands that you haven't listened to!

"Hear 'n Aid" is the 80's heavy metal supergroup that also put out a song for famine relief in Africa. The song and video are fire. It's called, "Stars." It has everybody you've been learning about in the video

I must reiterate - as much as I love watching you re-visit this song, there were OTHER tribut songs for Ethioopia done at that time - you have reacted to the British one ("Do They Know It's Christmas?") but it is HIGH TIME you reacted to CANADA'S song Tears Are Not Enough! It is great! It includes many of the artists you have already reacted to: Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Corey Hart, Bryan Adams, Mike Reno (lead singer of Loverboy), Burton Cummings (lead singer of The Guess Who) and others. THe good part is you will hear other voices that you have YET to react to that I think you would enjoy. Really - it is time to do it. You will not be sorry.

Interesting little piece of trivia, this was recorded immediately following that year's American Music Awards ceremony and most of the musicians went from the ceremony right to the recording studio. All told 45 artists were involved with the recording with another 50 having been turned away at the studio door.
Prince had a personal invitation from Quincy Jones, but Prince declined; but then later on in life he stated that he regretted missing out on such a wonderful fundraising singing experience.
Fun fact: Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles said that if they didn't get this in one take, they'd be driving everyone home
