    Just purchased the AeroScout for my 10 year old son, and he loves it.. Joined him up to a local flying club here in the UK, and pleased to say that the members are keeping him on the straight and narrow, with regard to him flying safe, eg abiding to rules set by the BMFA. "Kids can get little wild sometimes" lol... Sure you must have similar governing body in the US... Anyway thank you for the tips and know how.

      Sounds like good advice for junior, but a good tip would be to first check out a selection of Brian's previous videos. Love em as I may, flying in storms, under obstacles, close to his house, or catching models in mid flight, sure won't fit into any of the rules that's been taught to your son right now.. JMHO of course... Happy flying, stay safe.

    I bought my AeroScout about 9 months ago. Learned how to fly without crashing too much. Moved up to a Timber X, and today did the maiden flight on my new Conscendo Evolution (an amazing plane, by the way). The AeroScout was my first "large" plane and gave me the confidence to progress in the hobby. Enjoyed the formation and camera crew flying.

    It really gives me hope for the future of our country watching the Phillips family grow as a family and creating the family side business the entire family is building as a family. The values they have is a great example to every family.
    Yes there is a way to make time after long work days.
    I miss those days with my dad but we didn't have video and instant pictures. All of mine lost to time and moving. This lives forever. What a gift to generations to come building the family tree. Thanks for sharing all this.

    You are also a great teacher Brian. I wish I had this video exactly a year ago! This was our trainer plane and we learned to fly with it. A great trainer, great RTF set. You do need a bit more open space for the aeroscout then one might think. We love the compact size and the way the wing attaches (Horizon makes more wings like this!).
    The Apprentice STS is better, but also more expensive and needs even more space. The servo on the front wheel/rudder can break easily on your first couple of hard landings... Great to see your son and wife fly! Good to show how the plane can glide and how to bleed off speed, the AeroScout can be a bit fast for beginners on landings...
    We also totally agree about what you said about Horizon Hobby and think that their products are well worth the extra dollars.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! We did break the Rudder servo on one too, and I was quite disappointed, given it was a plastic geared 8g servo...why not Metal Gear 9G??? Oh well, rest is amazing, so I guess it was flawless, they wouldn't need guys like me ;) LOL!!!

    I noticed that every model in your radio has a number in the name. Those are not necessary. When you name your model in the radio, put the cursor on the first character (i.e. the first digit of the number), click the scroll wheel to select it, and then just click the Clear button TWICE to erase then entire name.
    Thank your for showing Megan and Andrew. That was a treat. They both did a great job!!! Your love for them show in the video. Good job to you as well. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more of your great R/C content.

    Thank you for this video. I watched it all the way through and learned so many things that I've been doing wrong. Just started flying and have already crashed two planes thinking exactly what you mentioned. Bought planes that I thought looked cool rather than planes for my skill level. I was ready to throw in the towel because I thought I was no good at it. You showed me I need to take it slow and learn to master one type before moving on and if that takes a year, so be it.

    You’re a better dad than me. I bought all 3 son’s the WL Toys pushprop glider (SkyKing) and since I was the only one that “knew how to fly, that I had the career Air Force Pilot as a dad, I’d fly the SkyKing first. Destroyed 2 in under 10 minutes... Then the worst mistake to my wallet I ever made was- “I wonder if anyone has ever posted a video on TH-cam about how to fly a remote control airplane? Probably not, but it’s worth checking.” 6 years and 40 planes later... my then 9 year old, now 15 loves the sport. “It’s like a video game, but outside and no HDMI cable.” And if your son is anything like mine, there’s no fear. There’s no association to crashing and the cost to replace or repair. The first time Caden flew the Timber UMX there was a roll, a loop and while landing, his fine motor was good enough to fly backwards.

      LOL - Thanks, and some of these kids are such naturals! They're used to playing video games, and that does help, but even still, my son is very careful...to the point of slowing his progress. I have to remind him...we have HUNDREDS of planes waiting for you and I to crash - LOL...but he knows the whole truth, I'll fix it, unless it's a total loss....then he'll get dragged into helping me ;)
      Glad you're enjoying the hobby with your kids! Thanks for being here with us Jeff (and kids, presumably)!

    I bought the RTF AeroScout and had a terrible time with it. Thankfully I picked up an RTF Apprentice S 2 and had much better luck. Long story short the DXs tx was severely limiting the elevator travel. After a couple front gear repairs and a rudder servo swap I bound the plane to an NX6. Now I get it. It fly's great. Now I see why it is so highly recommended.

    I was great seeing your wife (camera crew) fly. I can relate to the anxiety. Over 15 years ago I quit flying. The crash and done syndrome. I was tired of repair work with the balsa wood planes. The high density foam is so easy to repair. Usually in less than a minute. Now with the sale technology it's easier to be successful. Safe technology is wonder. Also, I'd highly recommend getting the full simulator. I upgraded from the trial or trainer version doesn't allow you to change the wind speed or turbulence. Great tips and info.

As I’ve already explained, I currently own the AeroScout 1.1 RTF, and now I’m gonna make my first attempt at the binding process so I can use my DX8 G2 transmitter with this plane. The AeroScout great on so many levels. I just jumped into this hobby two months ago and my first purchase was the Real Flight Evolution kit... getting started on the PC using an actual DX type transmitter body is amazing and speeds up the learning curve. Ordered an AeroScout2 from Horizon within a week. I'm already on fuselage #2 due to some aggressive flying beyond my ability LOL. My wings are pretty much glue and tape at this point and still work great. That top mounted prop is the best. As many nose plants as I've done, I'd of spent the cost of the plane in replacement props already. Great flyer and VERY forgiving. I'm now hooked and have three other planes two of which are waiting for assembly when my skills advance. Hopefully your commission links are working ;)

    I bought this plane from a friend of mine for $60 crashed with a battery. 1 $12 servo and some tape and CA later, I put this plane back in the air. I’m a scale snob pattern flyer that relies on SAFE. This plane changed that. Nothing does loops like a pre-crashed cheap plane. I’m not crazy about the esc/prop noise and wind up. But, it is a fun, easy and low stress plane. In wind around 10mph you can soar for a few minutes without throttle. The only problem is that in wind it takes a lot of work to get it back down.

If you want to fly casually and don't mind a slow, drawn out "improvement", that's fine too! That's a pretty personal call, after all.

      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      YES, I also had one strip...that 8 Gram size is weird too...so I too found a METAL GEAR SERVO for that one. I was pretty disappointed in this, but I suppose they (HH) want to keep replacement parts cheap, so they don't scare off new pilots????

      Even if you're more experienced, this plane could be an "everyday" flier. It's easy to get from here to there, and you won't feel bad about tossing it in the car or truck, since it'd durable enough. She'll fly in a small space, but still can take full advantage of a big park.
      It's funny, because even with all the sweet planes we get, I LOVE a great flying "beginner" plane since it helps me see the areas where I've improved as a pilot over the last 6 years and it's so much fun to fly a plane that's truly easy!!!

    Please mention that there is a difference between Basic RFT and completely ready to fly (according to Hobby Zone). My Hobby Zone RTF plane came without the battery and as a result does not have to comply with the FAA ruling for only manufacturing remote ID ready planes since the end of 2022. Additionally, Hobby Zone has currently no plans to supply remote ID solutions. Of course, they did not mention this when I bought the plane and it would be nice to know this kind of stuff. It is a beginner plane afterall.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      A few points of clarity...
      1) This video was filmed well before RID was of concern. Thus there is no mention of it, since my time machine is broken.
      2) MFG dates are probably NOT past the cutoff. I assume HH is just "playing it safe", but much of the inventory in the US and CHINA are still PRE-cutoff date. You remember when world commerce STOPPED for a year and a half...(COVID)...yeah, lots of this stuff was built during or even BEFORE that. You don't always know what the MFG date was. Finally, on this matter, it is the RESPONSIBILITY of the MFG, not the consumer...so please don't worry about unenforceable rules, or you'll make yourself sick thinking about all that nonsense.
      3) I'm not a lawyer, and I'm not going to get into legalese here on this channel. You won't find me talking about legal stuff here, since we gain NOTHING from being a talking piece for the FAA! They will NOT get free airtime here!!! They can jump in front of a truck as far as I'm concerned.
      4) Horizon Hobby (or any other MFG for that matter) DON'T have a solution because it's a MOVING TARGET! There is NOBODY making a solution, since it's unsolvable! Just live life, and fly like crazy while all the bureaucrats try to regulate out toys. Keep in mind, this being a beginner plane, doesn't mean the FAA won't change things in 2 day, or 2 years...there's NOTHING to stop them from doing whatever they want, with or without reason - so why would you even worry about it. It's like saying, I don't want to get a Motorcycle, since the DOT might outlaw it tomorrow...you can't stop it, but there would be a huge outcry if they did, right? All we're trying to do is make our hobby as BIG as possible to have a bigger voice if and when we need to fight. BUT...to be clear, we are of the mindset that they would lose in court, if they were taken to court. Again - not a lawyer, and not going to pretend to be one here. I refuse to be implicated in legal battles by suggesting anything other than I love RC planes.
      Sorry, wish there was an easier way, and I DO get what you're asking for...but just can't do it.

It flies nicely without SAFE or any stabilizer at all, but the stock propeller is on the loud side and the stickers/decals it comes with don't help it stand out against sky/clouds. Dude!!! U got one …. I told you it was awesome it’s a cheap little super stable Airplane and It will boogie if you want it too….The only downside like I said is that front wheel / rudder servo any kind of semi hard landing u strip the gears….. Super easy fix you don’t even need to buy new gears….just flip the top output gear around 180 degrees…. The reason why you can do this is because when you do strip the gears u only take about one or two teeth off the output gear well now you can just rotate that gear …. You’re rotating it enough so full travel left and right will not hit the stripped part of the gear it’s a super easy mod

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great idea with flipping the gear on that servo. I stripped on on my rough landing, and now have a metal gear servo from Banggood. I haven't had any other issues since our video. I was a bit disappointed about that....why 8G servos??!??! Why NOT MG servos?!??!? This is a "rough and tumble" plane - most new pilots aren't gonna know what to so when this happens...but I guess they'll figure it out ;)

    • @MikeSarni
      @MikeSarni 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrianPhillipsRC I totally agree about the 8 gram servos that was a bonehead move on developments part…. I actually never Seen an 8g servo before in an airplane .I remember when I stripped the servo out for the first time I went on to hh website to look for more gears and they were back ordered…. so was everybody else! so I just figured let me take a look at the inside of the servo I might have some spare gears around…. Nope! Lol so i ended up figuring out about 90% of the time it’s the top output gear that gets chewed up and it’s only one or two teeth so just turning it 180 degrees works a treat! (usually you cannot do this there’s a plastic stop that prevents that on other servos) And speaking of MG servos that’s actually a really good idea I don’t know why I didn’t think of that I guess because I haven’t had a problem lately…. but also remember the dimensions of MG servo Has to be pretty small I guess you could always cut into that wood platform a little bit if you have to….. did you put a MG servo in yours?? if so what metal gear servo did you use? I have some extras laying around from the turbo timber

I do have one question about Lipo battery storage on these smart packs. I’ve been told you can keep them fully charged and not have to worry about them, but I’ve also read they should be stored at 3.7 volts per cell. I don’t have a discharging charger, so I’m a little concerned on where the correct voltage should be or do the smart packs kinda take care of themselves. Glad you're here with us, and YES - GREAT QUESTION! SMART packs have a chip inside the end, right where the wires come out for the DISCHARGE LEAD (the IC3, bigger one) and the BALANCE LEAD (if you have Gen 1, but Gen 2 won't have a balance lead at all)... This chip stores data, communicates with chargers/other SMART equipment, and auto-discharges, and BALANCES all the time! This is one of the BIGGEST AND BEST features. We have more videos about SMART batteries, if you're curious to really dig in - "NON Plane Playlist" or Spektrum SMART stuff playlist...if I recall correctly.
      So, yes, you can change how fast the battery starts to AUTO DISCHARGE after charging, between OFF, and 240 hours, (or 10 days) AND to what voltage each cell will get, with 3.9 VDC on newer packs. 3.8VDC was the "standard" discharge point before we started using SMART batteries, but I think they keep them up over that to keep them from discharging too far. These settings are accessible when you have the battery plugged into a smart charger. Just scroll into SMART SETTINGS and look through the options.
      Good luck! So much fun coming, and we're here to help!!!
