    This is a synth of lore, something many have passed up over the years. Looked over for it's less dusty brother the JD-XI, what is the XA really all about? Grab your pledge and lets find out.
    Buy the JDXA here from my friends at Perfect Circuit who didn't pay me anything to shout them out, but I like them, so why not support a local shop! www.pjtra.com/...

    Roland absolutely MAXIMIZES their corporate patch library! I was listening to your demo and could hear my JD-1010, my Roland FP-3, parts of my Juno (obviously), and even some of the samples bundled with my TR8S. The jazz scat stuff in particular was a definite throwback. I guess my question for this series is how do you rate the JD-XA vs System 8 vs, say, the Jupiter XM/MC707? "That Roland Sound" is all over their entire product line (which I'm not complaining about) but does that mean it's really just about choosing a form factor/UI? Looking forward to the series...

    • @t.n.3819
      @t.n.3819 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with your assessment with regards to it being a GOOD thing that Roland finds ways to do throwbacks to their earlier classics, while also adding new features. It's odd to me how many people I see whining about Roland trading on their back-catalogue with each new release, even if a ton of new features are added. It's as if they don't realize that you can indeed design sounds beyond the nostalgic presets if you desire. But I think it's awesome that the TR-8S has a "Living Calliope" sample from the D-50, and that the JD-XA and Integra have an entire sound bank also based on D-50 sounds available to download, which come close enough to be passable in a mix.
      Even though the JD-XA isn't as accurately modelled as the System-8, the Integra emulations of Jupiter, Juno, SH-101, TB-303, etc can all be loaded on the JD-XA and still sound very, very good. If you run, for instance, a monophonic SH-101 or TB-303 waveform through one of the JD's analogue filters it sounds very much "Vintage Roland" and I've done just that on several occasions. But at the same time, you can create sounds that their earlier gear simply wasn't capable of doing. JD-XA can generate complex, evolving pads for days.
      I know I'm not the guy you were replying to, but I think it all comes down to what type of workflow and sound you're after. If you want a 99% replica of old Roland synths along with a killer standalone VA and an additional, albeit limited, FM engine, the System-8 is your guy... The Jupiter-Xm seems very cool (I've not used one myself) and it has a lot more synth models that the S8, but its Zen Core engine is objectively inferior to ACB in terms of sounding truly retro, on paper at least. It also has kind of a groovebox thing going on, a smaller keyboard, and involves significantly more menu-diving. If it was me I'd choose the S8 due to its immediacy and retro workflow, but YMMV.
      Personally, since I saw you mention that you own a TR-8s, I don't see much point in owning an MC-707, but I guess that changes if you hate using a PC to sequence your synths. I use Ableton sequencing for most of my basslines, chords, pads, and leads and only prefer a hardware sequencer for drum machine rhythms. I'm also a big fan of my TR-8S and would rather use it to crank out beats, instead of software.
      The JD-XA covers way more ground than the others you listed and (in case it isn't obvious already) is by far the winner IMO. It doesn't nail the old-school sounds as accurately (again, on paper) as the S8 or Jupiter-Xm, but it's also way more versatile and capable of exploring genuinely new ground than either of those. It lacks the immediacy of the other ones though, and has a peculiar architecture that took some time to wrap my head around (not to say that it's difficult compared to, say, a D-50 or DX-7). I'd say pick up a used JD-XA (which, for whatever reason, seems to trend for about half the price of a new one) and see if you click with its UI.

    I always loved this synth, its like our times JD-800, which is my all-time favorite Roland, with an analogue part added to it. This synth might have its fair share of flaws (like only offering four analogue voices), but soundwise, its just incredible. I have always wanted one, but its quite expensive. One day!! 🙌

    • @t.n.3819
      @t.n.3819 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a lot more added aside from the analogue engine though. The JD-800 is 100% PCM and doesn't have a VA(ish) engine like the JD-XA or even D-50. The JD-XA also has way more voices, a lot more filters to choose from, better FX, an arpeggiator, a sequencer, CV/Gate outputs, a click track output, a vocoder, an external audio input (that can be routed through the FX engine!), direct USB connectivity to your PC, a USB port for saving extra patches to a cheap flash drive ( as opposed to a proprietary memory card), and is way more portable. I get it all comes down to personal taste, but for me the JD-XA blows the JD-800 out of the water in most areas. But I also get that the larger keyboard and sturdier, mostly metal chassis makes the JD-800 more appealing to some people. I'm still slightly bummed that the JD-XA didn't carry over the PCM hard sync from the JD-990 though... people seem to love that feature.

    Most used synth in our studio. Once you get your head around it, it never fails. Only downside is, when the analog part goes in deep sub bass territory, the jd can give some nasty digital noise crackling. To reduce that, be sure you have the master hi eq gain on zero. On our jd-xa the master eq hi gain was on max. Even when we set it to default settings. After that it was better, but far from good. To reduce that digital bleeding noise even more, you can set the led‘s off. Nevertheless this is our most used synth.

    @KattKirsch 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Noir! It's weird, I honestly expected this, even the first impression of it, to be about the harsh interface or difficulty / inability in editing patches, as this (to me) presents itself as a Real Big Girl Synthesizer as opposed to Performance Keyboard. So, since I'm looking into a performance keyboard for solos / central "traditional" composition in addition to my weird nonsensical boops. I'm curious as to where you feel this sits, then, alongside something like the Nord Electro D, which I'm abstractly considering in that "what if I get some money somehow" sense. Also of course wondering how it compares to the JD-XI. Can't wait to hear more!

    • @crisbowman
      @crisbowman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a hands on synth. The presets are primarily garbage, it's designed for your patches to have time and effort worked into it. The Xi has more drum presets but the JD-Xa has better capability for drum sounds. I think the Xi has a better sequencer so the Xa is more for arpeggios and live playing than preset sequences or loops. It's one of the most versatile synths at a reasonable price. Anything nicer gets way more expensive.
      It is Roland so many of the features are menu dives, but most of those are one time tweaks for individual patches that you probably won't need for every patch.
      The analogue is fascinating, there's this living quality to the sounds, if your room/studio doesn't have atmospheric stability, it will sound different depending on the temperature and humidity.

    • @KattKirsch
      @KattKirsch 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@crisbowman Hey, thanks for commenting! I'm essentially aiming for a performance centerpiece, and I have a fully dawless all analog rig that's rather esoteric, so gear having built-in sequencers and such really doesn't matter to me. I absolutely adore analog gear that's a little finicky and breathes in the room; all that's keeping me from plunking down cash is: can I tighten the wurlitzer / piano / rhodes if I'm not 100% happy with them, how do those patches sound out of the box compared with a Nord E6, and can I make from-scratch patches from individual automators. If the answer is: Yes, Comparable+, Yes, then this goes right in the cart.

    • @crisbowman
      @crisbowman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KattKirsch Many of the classic organs, pianos, and rhodes were all designed on hardware simpler than this, but the digital sounds are saved samples, you would want their FANTOM or FA line for good sample editing, as those are classified as workstations. You _CAN_ make most of them but I would look for presets online and then you will have sounds you can edit.
      The patches are shit, they feel like simplistic or over the top sounds made for specific songs, they aren't versatile nor classic except for the Juno and Jupiter remakes. You'll likely be making most of the sounds you want to use from scratch.
      As for automators, if you are referring to an external programming source yes and no. For something like my keytar, I can control different sliders and knobs by programming the midi. But for things like partials and different voices, you'll have to press the buttons to change those.

    I hate to be "that guy" but the very first patch you played is not 4-voices. Yes, all 4 analogue voices are engaged, but you can also see that two of the digital parts are also engaged from the little lights on the left side of the panel... it has a weird way of mixing its analogue aspects with the SuperNatural engine, which is very cool. I love my JD-XA, but its architecture is somewhat confusing at first. It's a weird synth, and that much more special for it.

      I don’t think you’re “that guy” haha. It was a first impressions video, so me not fully understanding it yet is kind of a given. I’ve made many mistakes on this channel over the years 🙂

    You went for an arabic scale to play the Sitar... ✋ You're looking for the so called Ragas when playing Sitar.
    (I love Arabic and Indian music just the same, but they do use different instruments, scales and shapes)
    Check this beautiful voice out:

      I prefer to buy my own or just borrow, it’s been the philosophy on this channel since the beginning. I learned there’s no such thing as a free lunch, PLUS, I’m harsh on a lot of gear and companies know this. So there’s a reason I don’t get sent certain things.
