I sort of feel the same way....
      but I also believe that
every animal deserves a loving home,
      & a chance.
      We have two cats.
They came to us when they
      were almost seniors.
We've decided that from now on,
we will only adopt older cats,
& give them a chance to
      enjoy their last few years
      in a loving environment.

A counterpoint: I experienced a lot of death as a kid, pet and human. Life is short. Very short. And it’ll always end with death. It’s the love and time you get with another being that matters most. The loss hurts bad, but I try to remind myself often that the love is worth the cost of the pain.

I’d rather face a dog like Zeus than a crazed, angry pit bull. Tall dogs like this are like extra tall (as in almost too tall for NBA) people. Kind of clumsy. I’m 6 1’ and 235 lbs. From the side I could push Zeus over and pin him way easier than I could get my hands on angry pit bull.

His front feet were flat on the ground and when he got up from it he got so much taller. When he stood on his back legs he'd tower over my friends dad who was taller than my dad (6'2 or 6'4). I have a Great Dane too. He’s not nearly as big as Zeus though lol, but he’s still large… I mean, he is a giant breed lol. I get a lot of “saddle” and “horse” jokes too. GDs are stubborn and very laidback dogs. They are protective when they need to be though. I’ve never had to worry about the black bears in our neighborhood, because he’s about the same size as them and always scares them off. I never imagined that my first dog would be a Great Dane, but my husband is a giant too (6’4) and he didn’t want a small dog since he was worried he’d trip over them… so we got another giant to add to the family. Love the breed ❤️

My dad is 6'4" and our baby Dane has knocked him over... so I feel your "worried he'd trip over them..." comment but it didn't end up that way for us!! To be fair, grandpa likes to spoil the baby... which hasn't worked out great for him since she now knows he'll let her get away with nearly anything. We're trying to train him though (dad, not the Dane... she's well trained already!). :D

Yes, they do have shorter life spans. The breed, like most purebreds, is bred a particular way to achieve “standards.” Which includes a as frame like his that the heart cannot sustain for very long.
She mentioned he runs around for a little bit and gets tired. It’s because his heart literally cannot support his body. It’s actually quite sad. But as long as people continue to pay for breeds like this, it will never stop.

we just got a Dane and I love him so much. they are the sweetest! Ours is a "mini" Dane, kinda the runt of the litter at 110 lbs. He has a birth defect in his front right paw so its way shorter than the others and he doesn't have a real ankle, paw, toe or paw pads. He requires special wrapping every day to protect it and a prosthetic to get around. but we dont mind the work because he brings extra happiness because he knows we take care of him. His name is Nemo because why wouldn't it be. He makes everyone he sees happy... unless he gives you a great dane punch with his prosthetic, then you're not as happy lol

You can see Zeus is apart of the family. Hes not just a dog.
Thats how it should be. They shouldn't be expendable because you want a new apartment and don't want to find one that will take pets, leave in a hot car, leave out in the cold, never take them on walks... you treat them as you would want to be treated. Beautiful family. You can tell Zeus is happy as can be.

i thought danes had big hearts?

  • @nm.es.
    @nm.es. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

Fun fact: His heart is not significantly bigger than a usual dog's heart. The differences between breed's organs are nowhere rational to the differences in the size of the skeleton. For example, Chihuahua's brain and eyes are too big, Great Dane's heart is too small. Even thought the body tries to compensate this in various ways, his heart will always be too weak. It will be damaged pretty soon due to the pressure.
This is why he has no stamina at all and won't live longer than 10 years (Which would be the ideal maximum). Dogs of moderate size live 12-16 years, smaller dogs will live longer.
This is an edit to state my point in a better way. 🐾
