Growing up in the '70s, I remember this unusual crossing along with its rumble strip sound on McKinley. This of course was before the bypass. Never knew it serviced a power plant shortly thereafter. Great video!
Fascinating. I remember seeing those unusual crossing signals at the Jefferson Blvd. crossing, along with the rail-made style crossing in the late 70s/early 80s. IIRC, those bulbs lit up the crossbucks at night. If anything, it warned you that you were about to drive across some rough tracks. The snowplow drivers probably appreciated the heads up, too.
The McKinley Highway grade crossing also had those unusual crossing flashers and the array of parallel rails in the pavement. When you drove over them it produced a sound very much like the "rumble strips" they grind into the pavement at highway construction sites.

The Goshen industrial park also had one for a long time I believe.
Enjoyed the video!
Enjoyed the video. Does anyone know what was being manufactured at the Rockwell plant before it went over to AMC? Was it also automotive-related?
I think it was a stamping plant like Allied in South Bend.
Does gravel have pits?
