      That's because KC BBQ sucks compared to Central Texas BBQ. I've been to several of the top KC joints and they're Ok. I like Q39 and Joe's but they're not Texas BBQ.
      It also depends on what you like. If you like your meat slathered in sauce with weak smoke flavor and not existent brisket bark, KC is the place for you.

    Comments crack me up. It ain’t about KC Vs Texas. It’s about the pitmaster. There are great ones everywhere. And bad ones too. Except California, of course. No good BBQ ever came from California! 🤣

    As a Kansas City area resident I had a difficult time watching this. The experience seemed to be sub par. I would hate for KC BBQ to be judged by this video. I understand the idea for this tour was inspired by Ted Lasso (love the show). It is a shame that none of the places put out their best. As some of the other commenters have said . .. there is better BBQ to be had in KC. Joe's should have fared better . . . rated number 1 in the country in the past. Glad to see these folks in town.

    If they had someone who knew these spots well, they could've had a better outcome with the items. AB's should've just ordered the sandwich and not gone so late (and stick with the original sauce). Missed out HUGE by not ordering the King Crown rib at Jack Stack as that is heaven on a bone. From my experience, Gates has gone down a bit in its overall quality. Q39 is a great spot and so is Slaps on the KS side. Cool that you went on the tour but disappointed in your overall experience.

    Gotta push back on this. When you went to Austin, you judged it’s bbq culture, mostly, by its new kids on the block: L&L, Micklethwaite, and Franklin (I’ve also been and they’re all incredible). I think you should’ve done the same in KC with Slap’s and Q39! What would your Austin trip have been like if you judged it only by the Salt Lick or the Original Black’s? Also, a video request (you’re great I’m not vibing you that much 😂): a Z-man with burnt ends instead of sliced brisket, like Joe’s serves on Mondays.

    The tour you did do not repersent BBQ in kansas City, that tour only did the commercial / franchise BBQ joints. The best barbecue places are found off the beaten path. In my humble opinion most of the people that go to them barbecue places don't even own a smoker whether it be a WSM or a ugly drum smoker or custom built smoker or pellet smoker.

    Not gonna lie, kind of a poor showing and review format. Texas isn't that far from KC, would a two day trip and four full meals of been that hard? I would of skipped Arthurs and Gates on health inspections alone, both places are always dead for a reason. Replace those with Q39 and Slaps, then do lunch and dinner for two days at all 4 places. When I go try a new BBQ joint I order every piece of meat on the menu and every side to split with my group of friends. If you did that I think you would get better results. Anthony Bourdain would rolling in his grave watching you eat a 1/4 Z-Man at one of the the worlds best BBQ institutions.

    • @igozumn
      @igozumn ปีที่แล้ว

      When LC's is on, I'd put their beef sandwich up against anybody's in the city. But I've also never been so embarrassed to take someone there for their first time. Half fat, half meat, meat as tough as shoe leather. And I've never had burnt ends there that I didn't have to take home and cook for another 2 hours. Their sauce is great in a city full of sauces, especially with their fries. But my goodness, I have a hard time taking a chance anymore on going there.

    • @rossbarton1
      @rossbarton1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with this comment. I’d also say that if you want to do this right, you should (a) go at the right time of day (when they aren’t out of stuff or in between shifts) and (b) have somebody from KC help you order. I’d guess that 90% of the orders at Gates are “beef on bun,” not ribs. And you have to understand where these places fit into the ecosystem. Gates is somewhere in between a pizza parlor and a fast food joint; it’s quick, it’s reliable, but nobody in KC will honestly tell you that they turn out great BBQ compared to some of the other joints. It’s where a bunch of kids get dinner after baseball practice. And Jack’s Stack is cloth napkin BBQ…it’s just in a different category. Arthur Bryant’s is historic; it’s like the place in Connecticut that claims to have invented the hamburger. Do most people think it’s best of breed? No, but it’s historic, it helped put the city on the map, and it’s cultural. Joes’s is just awesome…

But, and this is where you may have missed out, the best BBQ in Kansas City is 100% the backyard and competition folks. There isn't a weekend (or weeknight, really) that goes by without someone in my neighborhood smoking something amazing. A lot of us here make our own sauces and rubs as well and hold on to our 'secret' recipes as if they were the next milliion dollar idea, and I think some of them really could be. I recommend coming to the American Royal competition or the Lenexa BBQ competition and finding the blue collar KC folks that will definitely be there competing. You won't regret it.

    I've had Texas BBQ. They do a great brisket, but there is more to life than that. I also understand that Texans like their greasy sausage. It must be an acquired taste. There is more to a good bbq meal than a fine brisket. At least for people that eat bbq regularly. This video misses the mark. It needs a local guide. Went to Jack's without getting the beans? After I had the crap beans at Black's last weekend. There is no comparison. Went to Gates and didn't get a burnt end sandwich? Crazy. I get that Bryant's can be an acquired taste. But I would have never taken someone there on a one day tour. A little variety and an open mind would go far here. Texas brisket is wonderful, but there is so much more variety and imagination in KC.

    I too agree with others that there are some better places these days so if you are ever back again you might need to divide and conquer. To get a better sampling. Bring it all back to a single judging point.

I know a KC BBQ'er and it's all hot and fast, 300 degrees. Also said you gotta hit them right when the run comes out, not 4 hours later when it's been sitting under a heat lamp. I feel like you just don't particularly care for the style of BBQ KC is known for and it pretty much shows. Its a documented fact based on nearly all of your videos that you prefer Texas style. Just wish I'd have seen a more open mind when it comes to KC Style

    It looks like you came to KC and didn't eat at any of our best BBQ spots. Hats off for hitting the traditional joints in Gates & Bryants, but if you left town without trying Harp or Chef J you didn't have KC Craft BBQ.

    I generally don't eat sauce on my BBQ in KC as I like the smoke and meat flavors. My favorite places in the KC area are A Little BBQ Joint (Burnt Ends are the best I've ever had), Porky's Blazin' BBQ (Anything here is superb), and Jousting Pigs (You can only get this at the Chiefs games now). The 4 in the video are fine, but nowhere great. Another great one is Buck Tui's

    All of these BBQ joints are massively corporate and/or on their second or third generation of ownership. Joe's and Q39 smoke all of their meats offsite in an industrial kitchen. Hopefully you come back and try some of the places that still focus on quality BBQ like Chef J, Slap's, Night Goat, Harp BBQ, Scott's Kitchen and LC's.

    Gotta be honest here and I know it will be controversial ....... especially as a 76-year old. BUT .... I'm starting to worry about your diets, weight, and exercise routines/lifestyle based upon what I see in the videos -- not to mention your continuously adding tallow, butter, etc. to achieve the "perfect brisket et al". I believe in enjoying life, but, as with most things, moderation is important.
    PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG BY SHOWING THE OTHER /BALANCING SIDE OF YOUR LIFESTYLE, DIET, AND HEALTH-CONSCIOUS HABITS IN SOME OF YOUR VIDEOS!! YOU WOULD SET AN IMPORTANT EXAMPLE FOR MANY IN THE BBQ WORLD WHO ENJOY YOUR VIDS. 🙂
