We think every one of those sketchbook pages could become a full fledged painting! We're so glad you shared your process and layering sequence, because some artists are a little mystified when they start combining media. We also noticed every color in your kit was a good, reliable name brand, no overseas-direct knockoffs- the original brands that invest in testing and development really are the best value! I'm learning from your ability to limit your palette to the colors you absolutely love, and that you know each one so well. I'm trying to break my bad habit of buying every hue, value, saturation, softness of pastel I can get... I have pastels in storage and yet, I'm expecting a box of Terry Ludwig blues this week because I didn't have the exact blue/purple I wanted. And thank you for encouraging me to do more plein air studies around Nashville... and to simply play in my sketchbooks more with all the supplies I have instead of always working on finished pastel pieces. I hope you have a wonderful and healthy holiday.

Sandi....thank you for your video! I love listening to you talk about your favorite colors. You speak of them as your friends... noticing beautiful characteristics of each and how they "sing" together.....! You have an enviable relationship with your colors.... it is quite contagious... as I listen to you speak off them , I want them as friends tooo!!!!
The Derwent Drawing & Lightfast pencils are my absolute favourites! Together with Caran D'Ache Luminance. I have to restock some colours quite often, because they're just too nice. Thanks for sharing your faves!

Thanks Sandi. I had never gotten into markers, but those Ecolines intrique me. I LOVE how you can purchase inks for them and mix them a bit. Your chosen palette is so pretty. The colors really do play well together.

Sandi, have yoy tried art philosophy water soluble oil pastels?
They have a rustic set and its SO CUTE, you love it.🤍
They're more oily than like caran dache or lyra and there is some amount of blending you can do with your fingers but they blend better with water.

Oh No! Derwent's Seaweed pencil is out of stock. Thank you for keeping this video available. I've been slowly accruing the gorgeous pencil pallet for well over a year. I started with full sets of prismacolor and polychromos about a year a part, then bought the Derwent 24 pencil sets and Inktense as I found good sales. Today both Jackson's and Jerry's are having sales, so I'm attempting to purchase Lightfast and Luminance open stock. I would be lost without this video to guide me. This pallet works wonderfully, even with substitutes.

This is the first art video where I've seen someone using supplies that I have! That was an interesting realization to have! I'm not surprised to find out that you enjoy those earthy tones of the Derwent Drawing range, with how well they go on the page too. My light sienna pencil reminds me of you Sandi 😂 after your advice to mix sienna with colours to knock them down. Isn't this one is a beautiful colour on its own too.

Thank you for going over materials. I found I had to use different materials while in a different country than what I was use to in my old hometown, Northern VA. Right now I am in Southeast Asia. And they have these materials, and did not realize the quality until now. All I knew was Prismacolor with markers and color pencils. So I will give Derwent a try to too. I use Faber-Castell, Prisma Color for color pencils and drawing pencils. Just bought my 1st Derwent charcoal pencils a few days ago after seeing another video you had done, showing your collection of Derwent color pencils. Btw, love all your Sketchbook tours, I really hope you do more. Really has helped me break out of the funk of not drawing or painting in them. Now its my fave thing to do :)

Hi Sandi! Watching with my 6 year old daughter as usual. We had a good giggle when you read the colour Willow Green, because her name is Willow Blue. Also when i was doing a choir performance the other night she went up to one of the women in my choir at the end and said you look just like my Mum's favourite artist Sandi Hester! :)

Sandi, this was so useful. I’m literally going to go back and watch with a pen and paper in hand (easier for me than interpreting the screenshot notations, I think.) I’m just getting interested in both colored pencils and markers, after years of finding them uninteresting. I don’t really want to buy sets because they usually have more bright colors than I want. And making my way through the open stock and guessing what everything looks like is a bit overwhelming. You’ve taken the guesswork out of it!

I love seeing the pop of that beautiful scarlet aubergine 😍, then how it melted into the background when the red-orange came along, but then sang when the greens were laid down underneath. 🎶 How colours are affected by the other colours around them.
I also like the jade green (tombow 379).

I just discovered you a little over a week ago and I find your process fascinating. I love the dirty colors you choose. Your palette choices are so different to mine and I’m learning to experiment with your muddy tones - I usually stick to neons, pinks, purples, and bolds, but I want to add some of these tones to my work.

My most used polychromos are Nougat, Beige red, and Light Cobalt Turquoise. Most used Holbein is Ash Rose. Fave Pitt is Green Gold, and Orange Glaze. Delicious.

I'm going to have to rewatch this and make a list. This made me realize I really just need to pluck all my favorites out and keep them seperate like this, I would use my colored pencils so much more.
It does make it easier and faster to find things
Between the last video and this, I ordered 2 of the Ecoline Brush Pen sets (I picked Greens and Architect) and I got the Cretacolor MegaColor Permanent White. WOW, are they magical together! Thank you so much again for that pen-breakdown! I do love the Tombows as well and have lots of them, but refillability (what a weird word) is a game changer! This was a great video! One day I think I will have collected everything Derwent. They are seriously top-notch in my book. Have a BEAUTIFUL Christmas, Sandi!

If you haven’t already ruled it out, you might enjoy Prismacolor Premier PC1206 “Greyed Lavender” - it’s your kind of dirty! 🤣😉 Skies, shadows, highlights, tree bark, stone, figure work…definitely birds. I use it for everything and keep multiples on hand.

While watching you mention the TomBow lid not matching the blue and leading you to under-use. ( I do same) I thought we should put artist shite tape around lid and color the actual swatch on it. I'm going to try that

Oooh so smart to mix the Ecolines with 374 ink. I love those markers, but some of the ones I have are definitely too vibrant. Will give this a try!
Beautiful color Palette. There is a crayola color named outer space (kind of like moonglow) that i use with almost every drawing, I use to get strange looks when i would use it with my artist grade materials but it works perfectly with almost every color to make effortless shadows.

GAH Sandy!! Now I'm scrambling in my studio to see if I have these colors!!! I have half the Neolcolors you swatched but none of the colored pencils arggghhhhh must have now. Those greeny blacks are awesome and I love your 2 little stumpy pencils lol. Thoughts on Inktense blocks? I noticed you didnt mention them but have used them quite a bit in the past. I find them to be very saturated and bold.....They don't seem to layer well over colored pencils but I havent tried a lot of color combos.
Oh boy - I feel an order coming😂. I go through stages - in the past I have used inktense a lot - use them a good bit in my new landscape class but lately just haven’t been reaching for them - but I know I will again!

LUV the pallet... may i suggest- that teal-cap-tombow-marker that you love and never use because of the cap?...- take acrilic that is the same color as the actual marker and paint the cap with it.... 😊😎 seriously.

For those of us on a budget but want to make an investment into a set of color pencils, which brand would you reccomend? I would love several sets to mix and match but I also need to buy home heating fuel this winter. 🤣😅

Derwent Holbein and luminance stand out to me the most
Colours that don't fight are a must have, can't have them bending all out of shape because they don't like each other. 😂 Love your favourites. I'd like the polychromos full set or the coloursoft (yes I need all the colours!) but I don't know which one to get first. It's my 40th next year, so my husband can start saving 😄

I would recommend the Polychromos hands down. I have both. The Coloursoft are much creamier and have some lovely unique colors, but the PC are far more lightfast, hold a point better, sharpen well, and imo are a workhorse. The Coloursoft have soft cores with some breakage issues, mixed lightfast ratings, and are too large for many sharpeners. If I would do it again I would still buy the full set of PC but only select some colors of Coloursoft open stock. Colored pencils are so much fun!
@@beckbabej thanks for your reply 😊 light fast isn't important for how I art, so that's easy for me. I'll probably end up with both, but I've decided to go with the derwents first. I have a thing for the chunkier pencils. I already have the drawing set 😄 It is good to know the polychromos are sturdier. My 6 yo daughter likes to borrow my supplies ( even though she had her own) but my Derwents are off limits for now. One day she can boroow my polychromos, when I eventually get them!
The Coloursoft aren't as creamy dreamy as the artist drawing pencils (but nothing is), but they are very nice. A few of mine are short because of core breakage 💔 but for the price point it's not so bad, and I've heard Derwent will replace those, but I haven't tried yet. Overall I think you'll be happy. Some of the colors are unusual and beautiful, they cover large areas quickly, and blend well. Glad if I could help, I must be nutty because the idea of someone I don't even know getting a new set of pencils makes me so happy!

Yay! Beautiful colors, Sandi! This is very helpful. I have my big set of Prismacolor pencils, and a small set of derwent inktense, but I’m really excited to add some of the other brands and types of colored pencils that are more velvety and saturated. Such a great idea to use makers to block in colors and layer with pencils and neocolors! Just plain FUN.

Oh! Just thought of a question! Do your markers bleed through your sketchbook journal pages? I have several brands of professional markers, but my Prismacolor markers bleed through so they aren’t the best for my sketchbooks. I have the green one like yours. I think maybe the other brands don’t bleed through as much.

This is such an overall perfect color pencil pallet, I want to get them all so I can also have the perfect pallet 😍🤣

I have a question for you, Sandi. I'm nrw to colored pencils. I recently bought the derwejt drawing 24 set and LOVE them because they're almost like a pastel..very smooshy..just perfect. I then bought some prismas and love some of them as well but I do want a good set to make up for what I'm lacking. I tried one polychromos and hated it. I haven't tried any other derwents ..so I was wondering, which of their lines do you think is most similar to derwent drawing in terms of smushy yumminess?

Hey Sandi! I always love watching you geek out on color pencils! A thought. Don't you think the color is called "forest" as in "Black Forest" ? Just to call it something more poetic than "Black". I don't really see green in that color of black. But I do see black forest in it! What do you think??? Thanks for the post!

can never go wrong with any luminance pencils, in any colour really. havent tried any of the holbien pencils, i would but im trying to stick to pencil brands i know i like so i dont waste money

Super helpful Sandi. Thank you. Have you tried FC watercolour markers? They are ergonomically perfect for me (not too long and skinny). They are lightfast too. Just a shame the range is very small.

Hi Sandi! I love the layers. What sketchbooks are you using? I find the markers bleed a lot with layering, as do the water soluble neocolors.

I tried to impose a “no new colored pencils” ban on myself. Failed at least four times. Off to grab a few new colors and try to restrain myself…..again!

Do you have a pencil extender for your shorties? I have a couple and they are helpful for those colors that I need to get that last teeny bit.

How did you pick your colored pencils? Did you buy full sets and pull out the ones you liked, or did you look at color charts online and order them separately?
Just bought colors I liked. When ordering online you never know exactly what you’re going to get
