In my youth in Ireland I fished dry flies with a cheap, bowed split cane rod and used a dacron level line that I greased for the entire length with muslin and a level leader but in spite of my primitive tackle I still caught plenty of trout on the River Blackwater at Kells. I don't think I ever met a nymph fisherman in those days. It still brings a smile when I recall the gear I started out with before I got my 1st hollow fiberglass with a floating weight forward line. Thanks George.
Greetings from Poland. Great and useful content. I am not new in "fishing world" but quite new in flyfishing. Your advices are simple and very helpful. Have a great day!
@@springerspanielful Thanks. Regarding versatile flyrod: I use 10,3 feet 3 calss rod. I've got a question regarding "universal" flyline/leader setup. Most of the time I use short line (czech???) technique: rod tip high, direct connection with fly, sighter above tippet leader (flyline does not touch water surface) etc. but sometimes I need longer cast and want to put line on the water surface and watch end of flyline: my question is do you recoment using sighter during this kind of flyfishg or it is too spooky to fish?
Excellent video george some lovely fish, interesting as always, looking forward to getting out for a day's fishing with you and learning the upstream nymph technique🐟🐟
Great video as always helpful and instructive. We are coming to your lovelyIreland this year and would love to drop some fly fishing into the time . Can you please recommend some rivers / flies to visit during summer 2023 . Thank you in advance . Tight lines. Brian

My first rod was also a split cane, and a Kingfisher level line that no matter how much Mucilin was applied still sank, and I still caught fish.
Very helpful, enjoyable, honest, and to the point for the Joe soap pleasure fisherman, very nice.
Glad you liked it Myles..

@@robertnowak1119 Best if you can manage without sighter, usually the tip of the flyline and a partly greased leader will suffice.
@@robertnowak1119 If you can manage without the sighter so much the better.
@@springerspanielful I will try. Thanks for your advice.

Thank you so much 😀
What brand is that fly rod
Is it flextec
It's an old Loomis, my favourite by far.
Nice video and really nice flies. Where are you fishing?
I fish the river Suir and tributaries in Tipperary.
@@springerspanielful Thanks for the reply. I fish the mud puddles and cow trails of Texas.
Do you use any tippet or just the tapered leader?
Just a 6x tapered leader, would add a couple of feet of a lighter tippet in lower clear water conditions.
Cheers
Any other tips for a beginner starting fly fishing using the techniques?
