As long as you have meticulously clean hands, bare hands are better for handling old manuscripts: you have better tactile sense and can handle the pages with greater dexterity and are less liable to damage the pages.

I have our family's Bible that has handwritten family birth, death and marriage dates, pre-Civil War. It's HUGE. I'd give anything to be able to turn pages like this. Too brittle. They'll snap right off. Still, so precious it's still around!! In my possession but NOT my property. It's ours. ❤
Notice how on alot of the books from the middle ages, the words are all in the middle and they leave alot of space on the sides?? They did that because rats used to be so bad back then and if the rat got to the book you could still read it...
