  • In this oil painting tutorial I'll show you how to paint distant hills. This video will take you step by step through the process of painting hills in oils. You'll see how I paint foliage details on the hills using my photorealistic oil painting technique.
I'm a professional landscape artist with over 20 years of experience in oil painting. My TH-cam Channel is dedicated to helping people learn how to paint in oils. I really believe that everyone can learn how to paint!

You are indeed part of a new breed of artists that are lifting the veil, exposing the mysterious secret of painting. I've known and met numerous
artists who always seemed to be holding back information, almost like guarding a secret recipe. I remember as a young boy in Ft. Lauderdale,
during the summer at the beach, walking the docks where the sport fishing boats were along with the really nice yachts and sailboats.
There were artists who painted the yachts, most likely for the owners. I remember most of these artist not being very friendly. I could probably
draw as good or better than most of these people but, their attitude and the air they gave off just reeked of elitism and all I wanted to do was
watch.......I was quiet, didn't bug them, "scram kid" they'd say, "whatta ya want" they'd ask. I just wanted to watch. That was it.
Now, fifty years later, here I sit, watching an accomplished artist plying his trade for all to see. Nothing mysterious going on. Not one step of
a painting is left out. You could easily leave out a part and say " oh, if you'd like to see how THAT was done " buy the DVD but, no you're a new
breed of artist. One who shares that secret recipe that's been guarded for centuries, kinda like a magician will never reveal the secret to
the trick, that tradition ends with this new breed of artists.
Now it seems, after watching you and others work your magic..................that work's the magic. Work at it. Work at it. Work at it. Work at it.
Whatever method one chooses to work, it has to be worked at.
The old artist on the dock should've just said "I'm working"

That's true and that is the only reason I actually decided to sign up for his school.
When I was younger, I went to painting classes for 3 years and the bastard who was the teacher didn't tell us even how we should mix the colors! I was always surprised why he chose certain colors. why did he choose another color rather than white to make a lighter green for example, and I could not formulate how to do it myself. I asked and he always said you should just learn by eye and practice, never mentioned there was a simple formula behind that!!! Anyhow, at some point, I finally decided to quit painting because I could never learn how to mix colors. until a year ago I accidentally found a video on color mixing and it was so simple and easy!!! I decided to start painting again. watched some videos on techniques and color mixing, etc. and finally when I found Michael, I stopped looking more for the style I liked. I love how he paints and how easy and enjoyable he makes it. He makes it easy, enjoyable, and wonderful.

Been struggling with a commission that has a heavy mountain focus and I found this video really helpful! Particularly your comment about not needing the mountains to look as detailed as the photo really helped a lot! I think I was really overthinking everything I was doing, and this video really brought me back down to the main focus of the painting (does it look good rather than does it look EXACTLY like the photo).

  • @MatthewAMalone
    @MatthewAMalone 7 ปีที่แล้ว

When you are adding in the details it appears, at first, that you are taking away from the picture, when in fact it is becoming more detailed. Watching your process is indeed a study in illusion in and of itself. It's like watching a magician on stage, and even though the magician could tell everything that he's doing, step by step, you still watch that person work and wonder how they did it.
