I don't expect to agree with everything you say, but it doesn't matter. I've watched videos you two have produced that have zero bearing on anything that interests me because I knew there would be something fun included. Your effort is appreciated.

    I wish there was a way to visually highlight all settings that have been changed. I'm looking through hundreds of settings and I don't remember every setting I modified and there's no way to ever see again what was modified. That's how settings get lost in the menu system and in our minds. There could be an option "Highlight modified settings" that would just draw some yellow or pink indicator behind modified settings.

    • @andreasbuder4417

      That’s very true! I usually set up a my menu, and everything I change I also add to the my menu (if available). That’s a workaround, and might get in the way using my menu only for the most used settings. To prevent this I put the most used items first and the least used last. Hope that helps!

    Synchronising clocks when using two cameras for the same shoot is a good one. It can be done afterwards but it's annoying and far better to get right before you start shooting.
    I've also found the feature on newer Sony cameras that allow you to save and load the entire settings of the camera to an SD card to be very useful.

    Battery savings settings may vary between cameras, it used to matter to me a lot more before the Sony a7r series batteries were made larger, even as a hobbyist battery life was a drag. One tip from back in the day was to turn off wireless (i.e. put it in airplane mode) since I rarely needed wireless. I don’t think having wireless off affects Bluetooth and IR remote trigger but I could be wrong and it might depend on brand. I also never actually quantified whether it saved energy the way Tony might. However, probably doesn’t hurt to turn off wireless when not needed.

    I was hoping you'd include some tips on setting the white balance and the auto noise processing on a new camera. I only recently switched from 35mm SLR to a full frame mirrorless camera and those two things took me the longest to set (sort of) right.

    • @adventure9606
      @adventure9606 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Auto noise processing may slow your camera down a lot while it processes the noise. I leave that turned off and process noise in Lightroom if needed. I set white balance to auto and change in Lightroom. If you shoot raw you will be able to make noise and white balance changes, if your shooting jpeg you can make very little changes.

Looking into starting a hobby in cameras and wanted something for my hikes, Florida/Georgia outdoor adventures and New England hikes in Maine, NH and Vermont. I want a good zoom for the animals. Was looking into a Sony RX10 mark 4 as my newbie camera due to the fact it looks pretty easy to use. I had tried in the past the Sony RX 100 mark 2 and didn't like it for lack of zoom. Also tried a Sony mirrorless and sold that due to all the different lenses you had to buy. What is your opinion. I also bought your book. Thanks

    I really appreciate the tip on reprogramming the AF function. I rarely use AF, but when I have, I've experienced the frustration of having focus change as I press the shutter button. In my case, I programmed the AF function to a button on the front of the camera near the lens because the AE button right next to my eye is not very convenient, even more moreso because I use my left eye to look in the viewfinder, since it has stronger vision than my right eye.

    Maybe it’s different for studio shootings (I don’t know, I’m just an amateur) but for more casual, like family pictures for example (or obviously street photo) i find it better if the shutter is completely silent, people then won’t try to pose for the camera and you can get more natural moments

      And, there are different ways to set it up. I prefer to mostly use the standard method of AF, but there are times I want to link the focus- so i have the button on the back set to turn OFF the AF, so I can disable AF by holding the button down ... really handy during reframing of a shot!

    • @andybarnard4575
      @andybarnard4575 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are cameras where back button auto focus is basically ruined (deliberately?) by the manufacturer. Nikon d3100 doesn't release shutter if you back button focus and then recompose if on recompose the selected focus point is not in focus. So the panorama technique described is not possible. Not sure how many Nikon cameras are ruined like this, but I personally will never buy another one to find out.

    I have four comments. Canon R7 Number 1: I am wondering if I reset my camera. Will it go back to the way it was when it came to my front door? I am considering this to start over since I have focus issues. 2: I never shoot RAW because my camera on Jpg is much smarter than me on RAW. My editing with RAW has ruined photos. Just me. 3: I have tried subject tracking on and off and prefer off. On makes the focus boxes erratic. 4: Again maybe just me, but downloading firmware and installing seems to be rocket science to me? It is a challenge to get this done. This is why I have not done the latest update. Plus someone was saying the new firmware update creates focus issues? Thx

    An auto-focus question. I have recently begun taking videos of objects on a turntable. Should I turn auto-focus on or off, since the object is usually long and the focal distance will change as the object rotates? I need for the entire object to stay in focus without the camera shifting focus every time the object moves away from or nearer to the camera. Any help is appreciated.

    If you shoot RAW set max ISO to the last value that does gives more information from the sensor. Like 800ISO most of the time. You can always correct exposure later and this will avoid clipping light sources. Check astrophotography pages to get the exact max iso for your camera. For jpeg yes the information provided in the video is correct.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this is true for raw files, but it's nice to see the properly exposed image in-camera, and it produces better quality JPGs & video. There's no drawback to it, so why wouldn't you use the higher ISO when the exposure requires it.

      Original RAW files are generally photos that normally need processing in post, such as in Lightroom. You do not save the changes in the original RAW file but rather export or save to another format such as JPEG. In this way you may return to your original RAW photo without edits or readjust the settings to something else you want.

  • @Simon-SBL
    @Simon-SBL ปีที่แล้ว

    The daylight saving option is so counterintuitive, but I guess it cannot auto-adjust if the camera isn't connected to an outside time source as DSTs are not universal, leave it on or leave it off, it doesn't matter because you'll probably forget anyway! At least Lr can sort it out for you! I think I probably do most of everything else here.

    • @ailivac
      @ailivac ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh they could easily include a database of every timezone's DST behavior. It's a solved problem, even without Internet access (sure, if you keep a camera longer than a decade there's a remote possibility your country will change its rules). They just don't bother for some reason. Usually they don't even record the timezone information in the metadata anywhere; Canon is the only one I've seen that has a makernote tag to store it allowing you to actually calculate UTC time. It also drives me nuts when security cameras don't have built in DST rules for their on screen clock display, which is especially infuriating knowing they're all based on a linux OS that I'm pretty sure includes this database anyway unless you go out of your way to remove it. I wouldn't be surprised if the firmware on most of them actually includes the files, but they just make up some janky UI where you have to remember which Sunday of March it changes rather than selecting a geographic time zone.

      I always forget to change it when I'm traveling and then the images has some obviously incorrect time stamp and can even end up with the wrong date which can be a pain, so I just change it after the fact, I guess the 1 hour DST isn't so important a lot of the time... Camera firmware seems a bit backward.
      It's a bit crazy that security cameras don't auto-adjust given that footage could potentially be used in evidence, even some basic dashcams do that.

    @10:21 I have to disagree with you Chelsea on using really large cards. I use to believe on having a very large card as well. I think its best to have lots of smaller cards in case something happens like corrupt card, losing or dropping your camera in water etc. That way you don’t lose all your memory from a trip or as wedding photographer, you don’t lose the entires days work.

      "Rescue Pro Deluxe" software CAN recover your files from a corrupt card that has a bad block.

    43.5 is the true normal. Around 28mm is the most common for smartphones btw.

    I know it’s nitpicking, but the proper term is daylight saving time, not “savings.” It’s a common mistake. Indeed, I noticed even one of the cameras in your video had it spelled incorrectly. 🙂
