    • Get the extension tubes that have the electronic contacts. Some of the cheaper ones do not have these, it's not worth it.
    • Macro slider, even a cheap Amazon one REALLY comes in handy. Especially when taking multi images to focus stack.
    • Tripod/cable release is VERY useful.
    • Make a small softbox defuser that can attach to a speedlight. This is very effective for insects. I made one out of a cardboard, foil, and napkins.
    • You can reverse stack a prime lens, typical 50mm, on a zoom lens and really zoom in. For this a tripod and cable release is required. Reverse rings are very cheap.
    • Cameras with flip screens are the most useful since you may not be able to get your eye to the view finder. Also, many have a 10x zoom in the display screen that lets you see the focus points.

My own cheap macro rig skips extension tubes for a bellows, then a reversing ring and a backwards cheap old manual 28mm, at f/22 with a flash and diffuser. I can ping snowflakes with that, or change out the reversed 28mm for a regular 135mm. With the 135 I can get insects in flowers but at a comfortable standoff distance. Total cost: $50 for the bellows, $20 for the old 28, another $40 for the 135, and $30 for the reversing ring.

Gotta admit, I've been pretty impressed with iPhone macro ability since the 13 Pro and 14 Pro

Yup. I have the 14 Pro Max and one can get so close to bugs and make them look huge without any additional lens. I took a pic of a hairy moth and the hairs had like little particles of dust or pollen, and the phone focused on them. 😮

Over 40 years ago I bought a Vivitar 90mm 1:1 macro lens for my Konica Autoreflex camera. I recently bought a Konica to Fujifilm X-mount adapter and tried it out on my X-E3 camera. Being in England, the weather was cloudy, so the lighting was terrible, but I managed to get a sharp image of most of a dead fly using the flash that came with the camera. The wings look beautifully sharp. Unfortunately, there was cat hair on the fly and that looked sharp as well. It is the problem of having two fluffy Ragdolls in the house.
The operation of the lens is completely manual, but the results look promising. Getting a used very old macro lens could be a cheap entry point into macro photography.

Some lens adapters even come with a built in adjustable extension tube. I have a M42 -> Sony E adapter which has a expanding portion to go from "just an adapter" to "adapter + 20mm extension).
Might be an option for someone who has a vintage lens or two. Costs about as much as an extension tube does on its own.

This is great for still subjects. I love macro photography. I was hoping this might help me as I want to take photos of insects and smaller creatures but as they constantly move, its harder to keep them in focus and what you showed here, wouldn't exactly apply to small moving subjects in natural lighting.

I wanted to buy the 90mm sony first after getting some extension tubes, but properly lighting the scene has been such a big hassle, I think I should buy some proper lighting equipment first. I want to film insects, so I can't use a flash.

You're back at the desk with a proper tutorial (I appreciate the reason for the desk and that you still do tutorials). Thing is you and all other togging channels* have switched to new gear programmes. I know many viewers love those but, hey everyone is becoming poorer and how to shoot / use existing gear / critiques are far more useful to actual photographers - as well as genuine learners. I'd love to see you return to viewer-critiques too - perhaps not live as I know that is resource-intensive but maybe ask for people to send-in items for crit with some brief notes (maybe have a form on your website?) and critique them in a pre-recorded programme. I have long-followed you, bought your excellent books and course (Art+Science) and do lament the YT-driven constant gear programmes from everybody. Before gear reviews were popular, you focused (sic) on gear reviews with useability vids - no one does it better. But you had a richer content too. I am sure you could do more of that without staff. This is simply fab, thank you. (* Except: There are many landscape toggers producing great vids on "this is what I do / how to" and a few in other areas. Recommended landscapers (though there are many): Adam Gibbs / Nick Page / Gavin Hardcastle /Mads Peter Iversen / James Popsys / Brendan Van Son / Jason Jones - everyone will have their fav but I recommend those... plus Tony & Chelsea from time-to-time).

I love your videos. In this particular one, I have a question: when using flash, you were iso 100 f22 and shutter 100, you said shutter 100 to eliminate camera shake. But at iso 100 and f22, ambient lightning would be completely eliminated, right? so no shake at all even with shutter 1/4

Hi Tony, (And Chelsea) what's the difference between taking a picture of a quarter with a 1:1 macro lens, or a zoom lens, zoomed to make the quarter fit the screen to the same size as the 1:1 ratio macro lens? If the answer is nothing, because I would get the same result, then why would I need to purchase a macro lens? Thank you for your help. I'm trying to figure out if I can do macro photography with the lenses I already have, (16-35 24-70 & 70-200) I do not have a macro lens yet, but I'm thinking about buying the SONY FE 90mm F2.8 G OSS full-frame lens. Thank you.

Tony, in the off-camera flash segment, you mentioned that you like to use shutyter speed 100. Shouldn't the shutter speed match the sync of the camera, like 1/125?
    Thank you.

Great video kids. I am a newish devotee of macro. I have had tubes for a couple of years and recently bought a Sony 90mm macro lens. Unrelated to how one gets into the world of the tiny is the problem of specular highlights. So far I have not found a good way to diffuse my way out of it. Do you have any helpful tips. Thanks

I really recommend a different way to shift the focus plane than this 12:42.. especially nowadays when you can select the focus point: keep your camera in place, and use a helper, a piece of paper (or whatever) that you gradually move along your perspective for each shot and focus on it.. don't move the camera.. you'd be messing with perspective, of course PS will screw up...
