  • Inflatable life jackets, PFDs, and vests are a comfortable and low-profile alternative to traditional and bulkier foam-based varieties -- they're safe and reliable, too, if properly inspected and maintained. Wired2fish's Scott Glorvigen demonstrates how to check and rearm inflatable life jackets.

The most significant difference between inflatable and foam PFDs is that inflatable varieties have a mechanical and/or manual pull devise that activates a CO2 cartridge and fills inflatable bags. Once inflated, the PFD must be deflated, repacked, and rearmed with a new CO2 cartridge, which Glorvigen details. While the exact process and rearming supplies vary between manufacturers, the process is similar.
Glorvigen presents a detailed step-by-step process that will acquaint you with the process and where to look on the vest for specifics relating to your particular make and model.

In Australia they do this once a year for $20. Fisheries guys from the government go out to popular lakes and rivers and set up for the day and just rearm or replace pfd’s for a one off fee

Great video and advice on the expiration date our Cabelas inflatables have never had to be inflated since we got them which is a good thing I guess but we need to re-arm I think. Thanks 👍

I’d rather trust my life to the old school ones especially if unconscious than ones that need to react to save your life.

Same here even though I'm in a kayak and any heat reduction helps I still have an old school pfd.

Remember to take off your auto inflatable if you get in the water. I learned this the hard way. 😆
