The 1.9L TDI Diesel Swapped Toyota Tows The TDI Dakota! 11k lbs Total Weight!

  • Installing 5.13 Axle gearing in the TDI Dakota caused a slightly out of balanced rear driveshaft to become VERY out of balance, and before I could even slow down or get it home, the vibrations cracked the transfer case. So, against all logic and reason.... I decided why not try tow it home with the TDI Toyota?!? I do not recommend doing this and it will not happen again unless it's an emergency 😂

      Especially at 5,000 FT elevation I can't imagine trying to do anything like this with a 22re, it can barely hold 55 on its own 😂

    One day I'd like to do a swap on a first gen Colorado or Canyon or maybe a first gen Tundra. Whatever it is would be a manual trans 4wd. You ever heard of anyone doing either? I had an 05 manual TDI Beetle and loved it. I'd love to combine the TDI with the smallest, lightest 4wd truck I could fit in comfortably but I'm 6'4", 350 lbs so my options are limited lol. Thanks for the content you put out Sir!

    • @TDISwaps

      I know there's at least a Colorado been done, and tundra in the works, either would be a great option but you may have to ditch a lot of the electronics and do mechanical tcase and aftermarket dash, along with the manual trans though you would have a sweet setup.

    • @TDISwaps

      @jessesneed2364 for sure man! There are some fancy digital signal converters to get the newer stuff working but overall mostly what I've seen is a lot of money spent and a lot of frustration trying to get it all working, the mechanical gauges or a simple OBD reader sure keep it basic and stress-free

    • @jessesneed2364

      @@TDISwaps I'll keep that in mind. I'd probably try to keep it as simple as possible and go with a work truck base model platform. Cruise control would be nice but about the only thing I'd not want to do without would be air-conditioning.

    • @TDISwaps

      @jessesneed2364 and cruise control / air conditioning are a piece of cake with your TDI, no input from the swap vehicles electronics needed. Usually it's like electronic four-wheel drive and all the dash functions that get tricky

      Yeah unfortunately I'm out in the sticks about an hour from a tow dolly service, If I was worried about the trailer I would have just used my gooseneck and powerstroke, but that wouldn't make a good TH-cam video haha. I went very slow other than when I was videoing

    • @Hicks8907

      The Dakota’s only 5000 pounds not 11k like the description makes you think (which is why I’m here I said no way that Dakota weighs 11k lol) not really over loading a dual axles trailer that much if any depending on axles

    • @TDISwaps

      @Hicks8907 that's 11k TOTAL weight, Dakota, Toyota and trailer combined, Dakota is 5600 with 1 ton axles, Toyota is 4200, and trailer is 1200 haha, way over the weight rating of the Toyota and especially the 2k 4 bolt trailer axles 😂😂😂

    Is there a "best or easiest" TDI motor to use for swaps? Sorry if a over asked question. I've just recently stumbled upon your channel and had me thinking seriously about how much better this would fit my needs than the gutless 22r in it now.

    • @TDISwaps

      The 99-04 ALH or 97-98 AHU definitely make the easiest swaps in the older Toyotas, they are also the cheapest for parts and services.

      I was taking it pretty easy for this pull, watch the other videos I have in my towing playlist for more extreme stuff, but this big turbo on the Toyota doesn't see much over 1200-1400° towing with the RPMs between 3000-4000 usually.

      @@TDISwaps im impressed with the towing you did, that is very impressive. I currently use an old 12 valve Cummins for towing broken cars on a 20 foot deck, I kinda wonder if you could do it with a TDI toyota but at the same time I am wondering what the fuel economy would be like. Also have you ever thought about doing a water meth injection system to control your EGT's?

    • @TDISwaps

      @A2J_Tim looked into it but as long as I'm under 1000 most of the time I don't know that it's worth messing with any lower. Yeah if you're already towing with a 12 valve you probably won't see much mpg gain especially that big of a trailer, and will be hard to control with a smaller truck. I'm planning to cummins swap my 6.4 powerstroke but until then the Toyota gets about double the 6.4 towing donor cars, this video was very excessive and not a normal practice LOL
