I am enjoying the Wednesday wander/wonderings. I have always done art since i was five( I turned 66 last month) and recently i was the speaker at the local art association talking about collage. I was talking about my art journey and how it has led to collage which is fairly new to me. I spoke about how freeing it was for me and how it brought back that child's sense of fun to my art. I spoke of the twists and turns in my journey that has included learning to capture a likeness, set and lighting design, and graphic design. These all require a preciseness and caused me to get lost in the details, literally and figuratively, of being a "serious artist." This, overtime, sucked all the enjoyment out of doing art. My adjustment came not from scaling back because of age but trying to find out why art seemed more like a chore. Little by little I stripped away the baggage I put upon my art. Now, I go into my studio everyday not to make "great art" but because I'm going to have some fun. Thanks to you I had some fun making a pop-up explosion book as a card for my wife on our anniversary. Keep on inspiring us,Cate.
Such an interesting comment, Gregory, thank you. You are so right, about the details sucking all the enjoyment out… your talk sounds interesting, and I am so pleased you made the pop up book! 🙂🙏
Thanks for the encouragement. I’m feeling the strain of gardening (digging In the dirt). I live in Florida. It’s HOT hip and muscle pain keeps me from hands and knee gardening. I took up coloring while I was caring for my Mother who had dementia during the Covid lockdown down. Mom and I were quite active untill her condition I worsened. I sorta let my activity of garden work go and picked d up watercolors to keep my brain calm after her passing. It helps to create art untill it cools off a bit. Thanks for your encouragement.
Thank you Robin, for your comment. Dementia is such a devastating illness, and this must have been a difficult time. I’m so pleased you are finding calmness in creating art, and maybe you will get back to your garden. With love, Cate 🥰
Interesting train of thought. My beloved mother was incredibly creative, all her life, and the saddest thing was watching her fade away when she suffered a stroke and got dementia. She lost all interest in all those things she loved. Me though....I've only come to embrace my creative side only in the last 3 years mainly because I was told so often that I wasn't creative. Its become so intrinsic to my mental health that I now can't imagine not doing it, so your video makes me think that I will have to make sure that i become creative about being creative 😂 Thankfully, i love mixed media art (art journalling, gel plate printing, gluing, collage etc) which doesn't require a great deal of fine motor skills.
Almost 20 years ago I had a stroke, which caused me to lose power to the right-hand side of my body. At the time I was right-handed, but I've managed to become pretty much ambidextrous, except writing. I even sketch with left hand, but I cannot write with it! My artwork isn't what it to be, but, like you, I still get so much pleasure from the process. Thanks for sharing your story ❤
Thank you for your sharing. In 1970 at 37 years old I had a fast growing Cancer, a dear husband and precious 10 year old daughter and a very good Doctor, plus God’s blessing for each one of them. I will be 91 next month. After my operation for some reason I stop painting and started writing children’s stories, poems, and adult fiction. I didn’t push publication much but I do have one poem and two short stories published by the University of Wisconsin “creative Writing Course “ booklet. When my husband passed away I moved closer to our daughter our only child who actually lives with me now. The Library here at the time employed a professional Artist and it is here that I started to do art work again and in many mediums I hadn’t been using. My good neighbor is a great watercolorist and friend. Many things you talked about I have experienced. I have a bad attitude at times that I have to fight plus recent health issues. The hardest thing for me to accept about growing older is I do everything slower than when I was younger. So thank you Cate for your sharing and encouragement. I do have a good attitude most days. Here is one of my laughs I had one day. I was looking for my glasses so I could see better to put my eye drops in. Another day I paid for my purchases at the drug counter, then went to pay for them at the checkout counter near the front door. I wish you much success in all your endeavors. I love hearing about all you do and I have done several of your tutorials. Love and God bless you. Oh, the weather has been quite dry the past and this week also. It has been in the 80’s and90’s.
Janet, thank you so much for sharing your story, wow, what an amazing woman you are. I am so pleased that you are still creating and celebrating life to the full. I would love to read your stories. With love, Cate x 🥰🙏💛
