When I studied at an art school in France, I kept asking about academic training in painting because our focus was so much on conceptual, my only teacher trained traditionally told me that I would need to go the “east” to learn them. I thought it was a shame, because we couldn’t produce works we could see at the Louvre that was so close by. Kudos to your school for keeping tradition alive. I wish I knew about your school earlier.

Exactly. The same hapenned in Brazil some decades ago. There is no place to learn to draw over here. But I think in Firenze Fine Arts School is still possible. Unfortunately, at my age, the only possibility is a free studio _ in France , Italy...

@@antoniocarlosrodriguescamp1497 actually there is currently a revival of traditional training in painting (and drawing). I am in the US now and see it happening here too. Look up ARC (Art Renewal Center) they list all the atelier like schools in the world, it’s not only in Florence, there too it’s almost gone, there is the Angel academy or Florence academy but still it’s not all. I am currently starting from scratch after graduating more than 15 years ago, it’s never too late!

It ssems to be the same in all of western and central europe. A couple of years ago, there were still some art schools which stood out among this homogenous mass, but even those seem to have vanished - your art teacher surely knew what he was talking about! I think that it is fairly understandable, though, of course, lamentable. Here, to me, politics seem to matter a lot, because in some sense they decide about the nature of education for the next generations of artists. If the people in charge are unable to see the value of tradition and are unwilling to *conserve* its values (and this is in my eyes often a political problem more than an aesthetic one), then individual artists and individual ongoing artists can value tradition and reality all the like, they won't be able to find proper education which values what their leaders do not value. "Multiculturalism" is always one sided. Let's face it: conceptual art is the art form of the ruling class, it is the art form of leftists and liberals. No one who values tradition will value a can of excrements in a museum or a signed urinal. Beauty matters, and the desire for it is a basic human desire. The forced popularization of conceptual art is just another political programm, which is just as utopian as many others, and just as much in conflict with basic facts about human nature as other such programs.

Hi, I'm French and since I was a child I wanted to learn traditional fine arts but the only thing teachers were teaching at school in France was modern art. Since the advent of impressionism and modern art, traditional fine arts have been stopped from being taught in France. It's such a shame. I was feeling so frustrated and, later on, so sad about this because it was everything I loved, and in despair to learn. Not so long ago, I learned that we had the Bargue-Gérôme Drawing Course, which is a method created by two French artists. Fortunately, you can find a complete reprint of this famous, late nineteenth-century drawing course. The Drawing Course consists of three sections. The first consists of plates drawn after casts, usually of antique examples. Different parts of the body are studied in order of difficulty until full figures are presented. The second section pays homage to the Western school of painting with lithographs after exemplary drawings by Renaissance and modern masters. The third part contains almost sixty académies or drawings after nude male models, all original inventions by Bargue, the lithographer. With great care, the student is introduced to continually more difficult problems in the close observing and recording of nature.

@@ekaterinaobraztsova4631 I'm pretty sure whoever wrote this meant a war between Russia and the US and Europe, because Russia is not fighting against Ukraine. Ukraine is just a place where the future of the world is being decided: whether the world will forever be American or multipolar, as Russia wants it to be. That's why I asked him/her: is he/she Russian, American or European.

Flea markets are a good source for still life objects. As Cezanne noted "still life does not move", and as I will tell you (who paints out of doors) winter is long, and you need something to hone your observational skills. Attending to the archival quality of your work is very professional. However, work place health and safety is an important science. Manganese Blue can be absorbed through the skin and poison you. A lifetime of small poisonings can lead to hardships in old age. This is something you might implore your university to look into. My College completely neglected the issue.

Beware of art academies - I have first-hand knowledge of the dangers of studying under a rigid 'traditional' programme. The Old Masters were contemporary artists of their own times, and they were often innovators despite the scarcity of possible subjects and techniques. They had no other option than training in a workshop but most of them would not attend an art academy today.

Art is a very tough field. While I fully support traditional methods, materials, and goals, --- I feel that mediocrity exists just as fully at the academies as it does at more typical modern art schools. The real problem is that genius is in short supply everywhere, as are really talented professors.

I think all the basics of preparing canvas, drawing, color mixing , grades of paint... should be taught throughout elementary and HS. Then college years can be focused on greater in depth painting. Throughout most of the U.S., art teaching in early education is extremely lame. It leaves the students already way behind while starting college art lessons. So not much gets done throughout college and they end up either taking private lessons or struggle for many years learning on their own. With exceptions of coarse. It is really sad that a country so wealthy and so many more assets than most, fails in supporting the arts. It's the old thinking of creating students o supply the work force so the wealthy can become wealthier and have an angry society. with low purpose in life.

Portraiture and figure drawing have become largely (though not completely) irrilevant, we have videos and photos now. And no, they don't say much about how a painter sees the world, because most artists follows a style and rules developed by someone else.

I've noticed most fellow students seem to be young like 18-25 looking. Are their older students? I'd love to train there one day but I'm already 26! Wondering there are any older students there, or if the academy prioritised young people? Thanks so much !!!

there are more young people here, because people enter after school or colleges, as in all institutes, but of course there are also adult students here, I have several friends who are around 30-40 years old, so you are still young enough to study here)) !
