"Cheap" Cameras Are Getting Worse - Ordro G700 Review

  • In this video I review a "point and shoot" camera, the Ordro G700. It's one of a recent wave of cameras that is flooding the internet. It seems that major camera makers are moving away from making point and shoot cameras, and people seem to be all too happy to fill that market niche with whatever they can have thrown together as cheaply as possible. But are they any good? Are they designed by people who even know what a camera is?
10-15 years ago, we had "cheap" point and shoot cameras from companies like Canon, Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Panasonic, Nikon, and more. These cameras were made to be cheap, entry-level cameras. But they were at least made by companies who knew cameras. As smartphones have become so ubiquitous, there is no longer as large of a market for "entry-level" cameras. Everyone already has one in their pocket. But some folks still want an actual camera. But the new options flooding the market are laughably bad. And at least for me, the laughing stops when I consider just how deceptive not only are the ads for these cameras, but even the cameras themselves.

Love these videos. I just recently noticed the "new" crop of cheapies on Amazon, and wondered if you had done a video yet. And here we are!

Great video! I have seen these cameras and just thinking...who would buy them, there are so many older cameras out there that are "real" cameras. I feel bad for the people that think they are getting a great camera. I never been a supporter of phone cameras over cameras, but I see your point. I think the companies that produce these things are just taking advantage of a group of people that have not been educated in what to look for when buying a camera. Thanks for showing the interior and pointing out the less than truthful descriptions of said device. My niece wanted a camera she saw on TikTok trending, thankfully, I stopped her from buying it, and got her a decent well made digicam and she loved it. Thanks for sharing!

Exactly. I'm sure some of the positive reviews are people who are genuinely happy with the camera because they have no experience with cameras and don't know what to expect.

I couldn't even find a brand name on most of the amazon camcorders or camera! It would be nice if they were actually as described, but with no brand name, can't be trusted.

Awesome video! I just don't know why these Chinese factories pump out trash cameras like these. They obviously have the technology and know how to build a good camera judging from some excellent Chinese made phones. I'll be getting myself a Sony RX100IV once they stock up in my local camera store, it's not cheap but you get what you pay for.

The only answer I can come up with is that people must buy them. They are built to be as cheap as possible and marketed to provide the highest margins possible. So if they can get them sold and not returned, they make money.
And somehow, they seem not to get crushed under a wave of people getting annoyed at the lies. That's the part I don't get. How have people become so tolerant of being lied to in ads? Blatant false advertising and people don't only ignore it, some defend it. I've been talking about cheap camera like this for years, and it's not uncommon to get people in the comments defending these cameras.
I originally started looking at these cameras, not because I wanted to tear them down, but because I was hoping to find good, cheap alternatives to the ever more expensive name-brand cameras. But I found only deceptively marketed, deceptively built, bottom of the barrel cameras. It's a shame.

I suspect there are demands for "faking it" electronic gadgets from special or niche type of customers. It won't be surprising to see these kinds of cheap cameras available as prizes in lucky draw contests and amateur photography classes for elementary school kids.

China still makes the most instant e-waste products. They are by far the largest manufacturers of instant e-waste, one being this camera. It's kind of nostalgic, when I was a kid, "made in china" meant cheap and bad and waste of money. Surprisingly still to this day, it's true for a lot of Chinese brands.

Until today, it's hard for China to move away from manufacturing C, D, E and F-grade products bcoz it seems like every single Joe or Jane Doe in China has so much financial means to open up factories churning out these so many disposable low-quality stuff. The market is often mixed up with AA, A and B-grade products and the only way to tell which one is lousy is by purchasing them, trying them and making a thorough review about the products so that other people will take note and not wasting their hard-earned money buying those products.

So what you are saying is that it is a toilet, in the shape of a plastic camera, that you can throw $200 into, and the only true feature is auto-flush. Dang. I bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS15 Digital Camera, very little used like new, in the box with all accessories, 1080p video, for $65 of eBay.

In my opinion, no. You shouldn't buy this camera.
I would recommend you wait and save up some more money to buy something better. If that simply isn't an option, I would recommend you look for something on the used market. The Canon I compared it to in this video I got locally, used, for quite a bit less than the Ordro. And it's a far better camera.

Are your negative words about Ordro just to get attention and traffic? lol 😅
I got the G700 last month and I love its macro feature. The price matches the quality and it even exceeded my expectations. As a beginner, its features and performance are great for me.
Please respect those who only have $200 in their wallet but still want a camera. After all, everyone's shooting needs and experiences are different.

@@ONSUN766 I totally understand that not everyone can afford a more expensive camera. That's why I make these videos. I hate that the quality, affordable options seem to be going away. If you look for used deals or clearance items, etc., you can often find FAR better options than any Order, or other generic camera.
If you are happy with your camera, that's great. But I want people to know what to expect before spending their money, because even $200 is a lot of money to waste if you end up disappointed. And the main reason I talk bad about Ordro and other generic cameras is because of the dishonest advertising and lies they tell about most/all of their cameras.

I have just bought one of these and I love it, I do TH-cam videos, filming motorbikes mechanics etc. in my shed and my cameras tend to get knocked and bumped, there is NO WAY I would use a camera that I paid, maybe 10x more than I did for this one (£159 UK), in my eyes its perfect for what I do and I see it, that I can probably have 10 of these to one branded digital camera, and even if it only lasts me 1 year, that's 10 years worth of cameras for the price of 1 branded camera. PS I'm not a camera expert so I wouldn't even know how to use all the branded camera's options and features so it would be a complete waste of money for me.

These aren’t meant to be good products, they’re meant to sell to the uninformed who don’t have the knowledge to judge the veracity of the sellers claims. If they could pull it off, it wouldn’t even function as a camera. People who don’t know the difference between a DSLR and a point and shoot, but know that all the professional photographers use a camera that looks a certain way. It’d interesting to find out how many people actually buy this category of product, and why they do so

I am sure Nikon, Canon and Sony is shaking in their boots when they see this camera. ;-) Anyone who want a good camera should go out and buy old DSLR's, they do get good cameras that produce great pictures. I have a couple of old DSLR's that produces much better pictures than any mobile phone today, my 17 year old Nikon D700 and my 10 year old Nikon D7100 are all superior.

If you have one of these cameras and are happy with it, that's great. But I think we can all agree that expecting a camera to have the specs and features it says it has, expecting the features it does have to actually work, and expecting the entire thing not to be a giant misrepresentation of what it actually is, is not expecting "perfection."
