1988 RetroSkins Highlights: Pittsburgh Steelers vs Washington Redskins [RE-ISSUE!]

  • The Redskins notched their first win of what would be a tough '88 season, surviving a scare from the scrappy underdog Steelers in what would be the only visit by Pittsburgh to Washington over the final 29 seasons played at RFK Stadium (the previous D.C. meeting being a 16-13 Redskins win over the Steelers at RFK in '68).
For the Redskins, nothing came easy as the defending Super Bowl Champions, including this nail-bitter win. The Steelers led 19-10 in the third quarter and again 29-20 in the fourth quarter but were ultimately undone by a momentum-changing turnover, a blistering Doug Williams passing attack that got red-hot late in the game, and a Redskins defense that, after surrendering two long-pass touchdowns, clamped down when it counted. In the end, after the fireworks finished and the dust settled, the difference in this high scoring melee turned out to be one bumbled snap.
It's Gibbs vs Knoll, as classic showdown of coaching legends, in this once-in-forever Steelers vs Redskins match-up at RFK.

The impeccable voice of one Curt Gowdy calling the action. Back when the NFL was truly a spectator sport. Also, Hail to the Redskins!

@13:41 Mike Oliphant was dealt to Cleveland for Earnest Byner. One if the best trades in REDSKINS history.

I had no memory of Curt Gowdy still calling games in 1988. I looked it up: he came out of retirement to call some games with Merlin Olsen in September of 1988 because Dick Enberg (Olsen's normal broadcast partner) was covering the Olympics for NBC in Seoul.

I have been a lifelong Redskin fan through the good and the bad and I honestly don’t know if I will ever be over the Snyder years what he did to this organization was a goddamn shame! Besides that there was one Redskin player that every time I see him puts a smile on my face Even in his prime, he was underrated, but from what I know you never ever ever wanted to get hit by this man sometimes he was compared to Ronnie Lott and if it wasn’t for Ronnie
Lott you would have probably heard more about. # 40 ==
    Alvin. Fucking. Walton.
Besides Sean Taylor, the Ron, Landry and Wilbur Marshall, the biggest and hardest hitter. The Redskins ever had look it up. !

Sigh. That was my first full season as a Redskins fan and I remember there were such high hopes for a repeat. It was a frustrating campaign on numerous levels. I suppose Doug Williams earned the right to be the franchise quarterback, but he was erratic all season, and the defense was porous and often susceptible to long gainers. The most positive way fans can reflect is as the beginning of the build up to the ‘91 juggernaut. I’ll never forget how depressed I was when they lost to Cincinnati in the final week. Something about finishing below .500 turned my 7 year old brain despondent.

~~ I started with them from the 1969 season - at 6 years old - my dad took me to the newly re-named "RFK Stadium" - ( it been DC Stadium just a year before ) - and at that young age I did not get the historic nature of seeing Vince Lombardi coach the Redskins - same had been true months earlier when I saw the Senators play the Red Sox there - and Ted Williams was managing the Senators going against his old club - by the '72 season I understood better - think I cried when they lost Super Bowl 7 to Miami - but part of that was the fact that it was maybe the most boring SB game ever - so I was bored to tears ..

Noll should’ve went for it on 4th down instead of kicking a field goal to go up, 29-20. Young team, on the road versus the champs and need less than a yard. House money at that point of the game.

Dwight Stone was still a RB at this stage before they converted him to WR.

On a break from videoing but will look into this one sometime. A rainy day as I recall. I heard there might be a copyright ban on YT but it could be a Facebook option someday.
